According to secondary reports quoting Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, GTA 6 will sometimes require players to earn money in the open world before the story can move forward. The reported examples are boosting cars to sell and robbing places. The reports do not say that every mission is cash-gated, or specify how much money players will need or how often this will happen.
What Rockstar reportedly said about money and story progress
Joking Joystick and iTechGuides attribute the comments to Rob Nelson, identified in the reports as a Rockstar North co-studio head. Nelson is quoted as saying: “We have made money matter more in this story than I think it has in previous GTA games.” The reports also attribute this explanation to him: “There are times when you actually have to go out into the world and make money – whether you’re boosting cars and selling them or sticking places up, there will be parts of the game where you need to make money to advance the mission flow.”
The claim is about money acting as an occasional condition for story progression, rather than only an optional resource for purchases. However, iTechGuides describes its source as a republished interview transcript, not an official Rockstar transcript or the original IGN interview page. These details should therefore be understood as reported remarks, not as independently verified gameplay footage or a published Rockstar feature breakdown. iTechGuides’ account and Joking Joystick’s report both attribute the statements to Nelson.
Does every GTA 6 mission require money?
No such claim is established by the reporting. Nelson’s reported wording describes “times” when players must earn money and “parts of the game” where it is needed to advance mission flow. That supports occasional money requirements, not a rule that players must pay to start every mission or earn cash before every story beat.

How might players earn the required money?
The examples attributed to Nelson are boosting cars and selling them, or robbing places. They illustrate possible ways to earn cash; the reports do not present them as a complete list of qualifying activities. They also do not establish whether other open-world activities will count toward any story requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unknown about the money gates?
- Amounts: No cash target or threshold has been reported.
- Frequency: The reports do not say how many times players will need to earn money during the story.
- Alternatives: Beyond the two cited examples, the qualifying ways to make money are unspecified.
- What happens if you are short: The reporting does not explain whether players can prepare in advance, how a requirement is communicated, or what the game does if they arrive without enough cash.
Those unknowns matter to how the mechanic will feel. Several varied ways to meet a modest, clearly signposted goal could give players flexibility; frequent or substantial cash targets with few alternatives could interrupt story pacing. The available reporting does not establish which approach GTA 6 will take.
