Why Hellraiser: Revival’s “Real-Life” Bondage Club Makes Its Horror Feel Embarrassing

A Rock Paper Shotgun opinion piece argues that Hellraiser: Revival’s recognizable BDSM club throws the game’s stylized violence and shared controller mechanics into an awkward light.

A Rock Paper Shotgun opinion piece argues that Hellraiser: Revival feels more contrived when its stylized cult violence sits beside a BDSM club rendered with recognizable everyday details. The contrast, the author suggests, makes the game’s horror less unsettling and more self-serious—especially when a controller input used for combat is also used to spank a patron. That is a reading of the game’s tone and mechanics, not an expert verdict on BDSM representation.

What the critique is about

The piece follows the game’s premise as it describes it: Aidan tries to rescue Sunny after becoming entangled with the Cenobites and a puzzlebox. In the early material discussed by the author, he moves through a violent cult dungeon marked by body-horror imagery, Scarlet Church lore, crafting tutorials, weapon degradation and stealth mechanics.

The author’s complaint is not simply that the game is violent. It is that familiar horror-game actions and systems are wrapped in language and imagery that aim for weighty, transgressive grandeur. The result, in their view, can feel more like conventional game violence performing profundity than horror that earns it. The critique appeared in a Rock Paper Shotgun article republished by Maxbit Games on October 8, 2026: read the article.

Why the club changes the comparison

The tonal pivot comes when Aidan reaches a BDSM club. The author points to details they describe as grounded: safe-sex signage, a recovery room, patrons chatting and people in restraints. Those cues make the venue feel like a social space with recognizable practices, rather than another grotesque extension of the cult dungeon.

That difference matters to the essay’s central question: can the game distinguish consensual fetish activity from coercive, otherworldly torture? The author reads the club’s everyday details as making that distinction more legible. Beside them, the cult’s violence can seem less like a coherent exploration of desire and pain, and more like familiar combat dressed in the language of extremity.

The controller input that sharpens the tonal clash

The essay describes a club task in which Aidan obtains a paddle, spreader bar and dildo, then uses the right trigger to spank a patron. Its key point is the shared input: the right trigger is also associated with attacks. In the author’s interpretation, mapping both actions to the same control makes the transition between consensual play and violence feel awkwardly blunt. It can make the combat seem childish and artificial by comparison with the social scene around it.

This is an argument about how a specific mechanic affects tone, not a claim that the two activities are equivalent. The club’s reported context and the cult’s coercive violence are precisely what the essay contrasts; its criticism is that the game’s control scheme risks flattening that distinction for the player.

What the critique can—and cannot—establish

The author explicitly limits their own authority: “Not being much of a kinkster, I’m the wrong writer to assess how Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival portrays BDSM.” That caveat helps define the piece’s strongest case. It is an interpretation of imagery, tone and controller design, rather than an expert assessment of kink, consent practices or the accuracy of the game’s representation.

There is also creator context, though it does not settle the argument. In a Pocket Tactics interview, Saber Interactive narrative director de Fault says: “People do deal with this stuff, but we don’t make art about it really. Especially not games; we certainly don’t make games about it.” The comment places the game’s difficult themes in a context of subjects rarely handled in games; it does not confirm that the author’s reading of the club or combat is the intended one.

Why the opinion piece’s distinction matters

The essay is most persuasive when read as a comparison between two presentations: a club the author finds socially recognizable, and a cult world that leans on grotesque spectacle and familiar action-game systems. Its point is that proximity can expose a tonal mismatch. When a game places consent-coded social details beside theatrical torture, the differences in setting, agency and mechanics become part of how the horror lands.

Rank #4

Whether that contrast makes the game embarrassing is subjective. The piece does not establish a wider critical consensus, nor does its author claim specialist authority over BDSM. Its narrower observation is that the club’s grounded details make the surrounding horror-game conventions easier to notice—and, for this writer, harder to take seriously.
