Nobody can confirm yet that Phantom Blade Zero can be finished with a wooden sword. The game is scheduled for October 29, 2026, and October 28 in the US and select regions, according to the official PlayStation Blog post from August 17, 2026, so there has been no release-day playthrough to point to. The claim itself comes from a secondhand summary on an unofficial fan database. The official posts and interviews we could check from director Soulframe Liang do not contain it, and nothing we found confirms that the sword was his childhood weapon.
What is documented is the design philosophy behind the combat. Liang has described a kung fu and wuxia-inspired action game built on handcrafted animation, simplified inputs, and a wide weapon set. That philosophy is why a humble weapon makes a plausible design talking point. It does not show that the weapon can beat the game on every difficulty.
Where the wooden-sword claim comes from
The claim appears in a summary on Phantom Blade Zero DB, an unofficial fan guide to weapon upgrades, materials and reforging, verified September 24, 2026. The summary attributes a statement to the director but does not give a primary source. Treat the headline-style framing, including the words “childhood” and “theoretically be beaten,” as unverified. It is not a documented quotation, and no exact wording from Liang has been located.
The table below separates what can be checked against primary material from what cannot.

What Liang has said about kung fu and combat
The wooden-sword idea makes more sense once you see how Liang describes the game’s roots. His statements come from official posts and interviews, not from the fan database.
Kungfupunk as an art direction
In his May 24, 2023 post, Liang said the game is a spiritual rebirth of the earlier Rainblood game. It places protagonist Soul in the Phantom World, where Chinese kung fu, machinery with a steampunk feel, occult arts and other influences meet. He summed up the look in one line: “We call this overall art direction ‘Kungfupunk’.”

In a December 2025 interview with RPG Site, Liang described “kung fu punk” as traditional kung fu and Chinese culture combined with modern fashion elements such as steampunk and cyberpunk. He said the team was trying to establish a new action subgenre, which he framed as “Kung fu action game” or “Wuxia action games.” The interview is useful for his stated aim, not as a claim about how the game plays.
Movement, input and handcrafted animation
Liang’s 2023 post says the team looked closely at the fast, elaborate action of 1990s kung fu films. It also says the team drew on its experience simplifying mobile-game inputs, so players can perform long move chains with fewer button presses on a controller. The stated goal is a combat style that feels cinematic without requiring a complicated button sequence for every move.

The post credits action director Kenji Tanigaki with demonstrating designed moves for the animation team’s reference. Liang also gives a specific reason for the animation method: “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.”
Turning wuxia swordplay into game rules
A UCG Media interview with Liang, published in Chinese, goes further into how martial tradition maps onto game systems. The retrieved page does not show a publication date, so treat its timing as unconfirmed. Liang says traditional Chinese sword and blade techniques often blur attack and defense into an exchange of blades, which makes them hard to translate directly into familiar game mechanics. The studio’s approach was to reflect wuxia logic in systems such as blocking, and to give individual weapons movement styles suited to their cultural roots.

- Wooden Toy Sword for Kids: Immerse your child in a world of imagination with this beautifully hand crafted wooden sword featuring a burned finish for a rustic look.
- Durable Construction: Built to withstand the rigors of play, the wooden sword is sturdy and resilient, ensuring it will last through countless adventures and battles.
- Inspires Creativity: Encourage your child's creativity and storytelling skills as they embark on epic quests and adventures, defending their kingdom and vanquishing dragons with their trusty sword.

- Safe Playtime: Made from high-quality, non-toxic wood, this toy sword ensures hours of safe and imaginative play for kids, allowing them to channel their inner knight without any worries.
That is the strongest context for the wooden-sword idea. If a weapon’s identity comes from its movement and the logic of its exchanges, then a plain weapon becomes a test of how well the system expresses that logic. Whether a wooden sword can carry a full run is a separate question about balance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a humble weapon fits the design, and what it does not prove
The official August 2026 post describes a wide arsenal. Players get more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. Weapons can be upgraded, combined with accessories, and reforged to reclaim upgrade materials. Side quests may open story paths. That breadth supports the idea that many weapons are meant to be playable, but it does not say which ones are strong enough to finish the game on every setting.

Difficulty is the other half of the question. The same post lists three modes:
| Difficulty | Official description |
|---|---|
| Wayfarer | Aimed at players focused on the story |
| Hellwalker | More advanced enemies that adapt to the player |
| Sixty-Six Days | A more punishing challenge |
A claim that a wooden sword can finish the game would need to specify the difficulty, whether side quests and Phantom Edges were used, and whether the run was completed from start to finish. The available sources say none of these things.
Quick Recap
How to check the claim once the game ships
- Look for a primary statement. A recorded interview or official post in which Liang names the wooden sword, the childhood origin and the “theoretically be beaten” framing would settle the wording question. The fan database summary is not that.
- Ask which difficulty the claim refers to. Wayfarer, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days are different tests, and the official post does not say how they compare for a single weapon.
- Separate a theoretical claim from a demonstrated one. A run documented from start to finish with clear settings is different from an argument that the game’s systems should allow it.
- Check for later changes. Balance and difficulty can shift after release, so a claim made at launch may not describe a later patch.
