Yes: a browser recreation of the early vehicle-physics simulation that Patrick Kerr says became the basis of the original Grand Theft Auto’s vehicle system is now playable. It is a physics demo—not the original GTA, a full game, or a release of its source code.
What you can play
The browser experience, called Motion Lab in 80 Level’s October 7, 2026 coverage, recreates Kerr’s 2D vehicle-physics prototype in JavaScript. It can be played on PC or mobile, according to 80 Level. The demo lets you experiment with different simulation modes and selected physics and camera settings.
That distinction matters: this is not a playable edition of the original Grand Theft Auto. It recreates a piece of technology associated with the game’s development, rather than the game itself.
How the original prototype relates to GTA
In his creator-authored account, Patrick Kerr says he wrote the original 2D simulation over a weekend in late August 1996. It began as a wireframe demo made in GFA BASIC on his Atari ST home computer, then he ported it to C for use in Grand Theft Auto. Kerr says the simulation later became the basis of the game’s vehicle system; that attribution does not establish that every part of the finished game’s driving model came from this prototype. - Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
The current browser version is a JavaScript recreation presented for the prototype’s 30th anniversary. The Atari ST and the original GFA BASIC demo belong to the project’s history; neither is needed to try the recreation.
