How much does the Steam Machine cost?
Game Informer reported these US announcement prices on June 22, 2026, and GameSpot listed the same amounts in a June 24 report. They are reported announcement prices, not confirmation of current stock, transaction prices, or pricing outside the US.

The 2TB option costs $300 more than the 512GB option in either bundle. The reported controller bundle adds $79 to either configuration. Check a current retailer or Valve listing for live availability and pricing in your region.
What do the configurations add?
Both storage tiers share the reported core hardware: a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor with six cores and 12 threads, semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 graphics with 28 compute units, 16GB of DDR5 system memory, and 8GB of GDDR6 graphics memory. Other listed features include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, a microSD slot, and SteamOS 3. Game Informer described the unit as a compact cube roughly six inches across.

512GB model
The less expensive version includes a 512GB NVMe SSD. The no-controller configuration is the reported $1,049 entry point; adding the Steam Controller brings the reported price to $1,128.
2TB model
The higher-capacity version has a 2TB NVMe SSD and, according to Game Informer, additional faceplates. It costs $1,349 without the controller or $1,428 with it, according to the June 2026 reports.

These are reported specifications, not independent performance results. They do not establish how a particular game will run at a given resolution or graphics setting.
Why does the Steam Machine cost so much?
Valve engineers offered two pieces of context in a July 6, 2026 interview with Tom’s Hardware. Pierre-Loup Griffais described the product as a PC-oriented offering and said its value depends partly on a buyer’s existing Steam library and other PC uses. In Valve’s view, comparing it directly with a console can miss the value of games a customer already owns and software beyond gaming. That is Valve’s perspective, not an independent finding that the Steam Machine is a better deal.

Engineer Yazan Aldehayyat said the original design was based on memory and storage prices from roughly two years before the interview, a different market context from the eventual pricing. He did not provide a precise dollar amount for how much component costs changed. Asked what he would change, Aldehayyat answered, “Make it cheaper,” a candid response from the engineer rather than an official company statement.
What should buyers weigh before deciding?
Existing games and PC uses
If most of your gaming library is already on Steam, that library may factor into your comparison, as Griffais argued. Also consider whether you would use the machine for other PC software. Those benefits depend on your own library and needs; they do not reduce the purchase price.

Resolution and performance expectations
Valve’s engineers said performance depends on the game and settings. Aldehayyat said recent demanding games may be better suited to 1080p or 1440p render resolution, even when connected to a 4K display. A 4K output signal or upscaled image is not the same as rendering a game natively at 4K. The cited reports do not provide independent benchmarks, so buyers seeking a specific frame rate or image quality should look for results for the games and settings they care about.
Living-room convenience versus alternatives
The Steam Machine’s compact, living-room-oriented design may appeal to someone who wants a PC-like system in a small form factor. The relevant comparison is not just a console’s sticker price: it is also a similarly priced self-built or prebuilt PC, including its size, setup, software uses, and game performance. No current independent price comparison establishes which option offers better value, so compare alternatives available in your region rather than relying on a general claim.

Storage and controller bundle
Choose between 512GB and 2TB based on how much installed game storage you expect to need and whether you are comfortable managing space or using the microSD slot. The controller is included only in the higher-priced bundle variants shown above; the reports do not describe it as required to buy the system.
