Tearscape Mixes Bloodborne Combat With Zelda-Style Adventure: Does the Blend Work?

Tearscape pairs a nostalgic top-down Zelda look with Soulslike combat from Bloodborne and Dark Souls. Reviewers praise its interconnected world and puzzle-combat abilities but criticize slow, stiff controls.

Tearscape is an indie action-adventure that takes its look from classic top-down Zelda games and its emphasis on combat and exploration from Soulslikes such as Bloodborne and Dark Souls. The blend is appealing on paper, and early critical reception is split on execution: one reviewer praises the ideas and dungeon design, while another criticizes slow, stiff controls. If you are deciding whether it is worth your time, treat the Bloodborne-meets-Zelda pitch as a promising premise rather than a guaranteed seamless fusion.

What the Bloodborne comparison actually means

The comparison is useful shorthand, not a description of an official crossover. In a March 2025 interview, solo developer Tudor Prodan explained that the game’s look and feel resemble an older classic Legend of Zelda title, while its combat and exploration carry Soulslike influences from Dark Souls and Bloodborne. He also described the visual style as deliberately nostalgic and retro. The interview does not suggest any tie-in, licensed content, or remake of either franchise.

Players and storefront reviewers have adopted similar phrasing. Two comparisons that appear in user reviews are “Legend of Zelda mixed with Bloodborne” and “Bloodborne demake in the style of a handheld Zelda game.” These are informal user impressions, not official descriptions. The most quoted endorsement comes from Steam curator Casey Explosion, whose listing review says the game is “essentially a Bloodborne demake in the style of a handheld Zelda game, but the solid gameplay with clever dungeon design and challenging bosses raised it beyond my expectations.” The captured listing shows the date as March 7 without a year, so treat that date as unverified.

How the game is built

Reviewers describe Tearscape’s structure as closer to a metroidvania than to a conventional Zelda dungeon crawl. Instead of a fixed sequence of standalone temples, the regions connect into one interconnected world that opens up as you gain new abilities.

Interconnected areas and progression

According to a July 2026 review from JOLRN, the world uses ability-gated access: areas you can see early on may only become reachable once you have the right tool. The same review reports fast travel available from the beginning of the game and customizable map markers for tracking points of interest. These are the reviewer’s observations of the structure, and they describe the game’s design rather than a specific number of hours or regions.

Abilities that do double duty

The same JOLRN review says ranged weapons and other abilities are not limited to combat. Firearms can activate levers placed at a distance, and bombs, charged attacks, and similar tools are used to solve environmental puzzles and reach new routes. This is the element that most clearly pulls the game toward Zelda-style puzzle exploration: a single ability may be both a weapon and a key.

Combat: rewarding to master, but the controls work against it

Niche Gamer’s review argues that combat can be satisfying and rewarding once you learn it, which is where the Soulslike influence is most visible. Its main criticism is that the controls feel slow and stiff, and that friction can undercut the precision the combat asks for. The review also describes optional enemy fights and a tear-based progression resource, which fits the game’s title and identity. Whether the stiffness bothers you will depend on how much you value responsive movement against the deliberate pacing of the fights.

Co-op and platform availability

Co-op is one of the points where sources agree, but you should confirm it on the live listing for your platform. JOLRN reports that Tearscape supports two-player co-op. The Steam listing labels the game as offering shared/split-screen co-op. Because co-op availability can vary between storefronts and versions, check the current store page before you buy if playing with a friend is a deciding factor.

Who the blend suits

Tearscape is most likely to appeal to players who want the look of a 2D-style top-down Zelda game with the stakes of Soulslike combat and the progression logic of a metroidvania. Its best selling points, based on reviewer accounts, are interconnected exploration, abilities that solve puzzles as well as fights, and boss and dungeon design that reviewers praise. Its clearest drawback is the control feel. If you find slow, stiff movement tolerable, the combination is worth trying, particularly with the Steam demo if it is available on your platform. If responsive controls are essential to you, treat the criticism as a serious warning rather than a minor quibble.

Developer statements come from the 2025 interview with Tudor Prodan. Gameplay details, including the structure, abilities, and combat assessment, are reviewers’ interpretations rather than our own hands-on testing.
