The base-game weapons come from a mix of pickups, boss drops, NPC questlines and a Remembrance exchange; the expansion adds Star-Lined Sword and Sword of Night. The routes below keep the base game and DLC separate so you can find the weapon you need without mixing their requirements.
Base-game katana locations
The eight base-game katana locations and acquisition methods below are documented in SegmentNext’s 2024 location guide; an earlier Attack of the Fanboy guide also covers the base-game list and routes, while warning that it may be outdated.

Early and mid-game pickups
The Uchigatana is the earliest straightforward option in this list: Samurai characters start with it, while other characters can loot it in Deathtouched Catacombs. Meteoric Ore Blade is another pickup, found in a chest rather than earned from an enemy.
Boss and invader rewards
Moonveil, Rivers of Blood and Dragonscale Blade are obtained from specific encounters: the Magma Wyrm in Gael Tunnel, Okina near the Church of Repose, and the Dragonkin Soldier in the Lake of Rot, respectively. Hand of Malenia requires defeating Malenia and exchanging her Remembrance, rather than looting the weapon directly from her.

Quest-dependent weapons
Nagakiba and Serpentbone Blade are not simple map pickups. Nagakiba is tied to Bloody Finger Hunter Yura, and the cited guide gives alternative-looking acquisition points along his route. Quest progress or Yura’s death may change when or where it can be collected; the guide does not settle every possible quest state. Serpentbone Blade is the reward for completing the second Volcano Manor letter/task.
Shadow of the Erdtree katana locations
Shadow of the Erdtree adds two katanas to the base-game eight: Star-Lined Sword and Sword of Night. These expansion entries appear in a 2025 Steam Community guide by FIRUIN, which lists ten katanas total; Steam indicates that guide was removed from the community, so its route details should be treated as community-guide information rather than official documentation. The guide’s DLC katana entries identify the weapons and describe a Sword of Night route.

- Star-Lined Sword: Listed as a Shadow of the Erdtree katana. The cited guide does not establish a detailed acquisition route in the available information.
- Sword of Night: The guide’s route is to complete Ymir’s requests, defeat Metyr, return to the throne and defeat Ymir, then speak with Jolan and choose the Iris of Occultation option. This is the route reported by that guide.
How many katanas are in Elden Ring?
Count the scope you own: the base game has eight katanas, according to SegmentNext’s 2024 guide; including the two Shadow of the Erdtree entries brings the total to ten, as listed in the 2025 Steam Community guide. The expansion weapons are not part of the base-game checklist above.

No official FromSoftware catalog was identified for a canonical katana list, so the expansion details here are attributed to that community guide rather than presented as an official inventory.
