The Scientist’s first Strange Specimens request in DREDGE: The Iron Rig asks for four catches: Paddlefish, Osteostracan, Tullimonstrum, and Sea Cucumber. Walkthrough-reported locations put the three fish at contaminated spots in The Marrows at J-7 and J-9; the Sea Cucumber comes from a crab pot. These directions cover the first set only—not every later Scientist request.

First Strange Specimens: locations and equipment

The coordinates below come from walkthroughs, rather than independent testing. Check that each spot is still marked as a valid fishing location and that your equipment supports its habitat before trying to catch the specimen.

Specimen Reported location Method and equipment
Paddlefish Contaminated fishing spot at J-7, The Marrows Coastal Infused rod
Osteostracan Contaminated area at the southwest corner of J-9, The Marrows Shallow Infused rod
Tullimonstrum Contaminated area at the southwest corner of J-9, The Marrows Coastal Infused rod
Sea Cucumber Contaminated area at J-7, The Marrows; one walkthrough reports a depth of 19.7 m Crab pot

The coordinate and gear details are reported by the Neoseeker Iron Rig walkthrough. A separate DLC walkthrough confirms the four species in the first set and identifies the Sea Cucumber as a crab-pot catch.

Why the right location may not be enough

A fishing spot alone does not guarantee a catch. DREDGE’s fish-finding information indicates that availability depends on region, habitat depth, time window, and the fishing method your equipment supports. Contaminated Iron Rig catches may also require the matching Infused equipment.

  • Check the specimen’s habitat and fishing method before sailing.
  • Use an Infused rod suited to the catch’s habitat for the contaminated fish listed above.
  • Use a crab pot for the Sea Cucumber; a rod is not a substitute.

For general fishing rules, see the DREDGE fishing guide. The first-set location and equipment details above are walkthrough-reported, so treat the coordinates as guidance rather than independently verified measurements.

Does this cover every Scientist request?

No. These supported details cover the Scientist’s first Strange Specimens set in The Marrows. The Iron Rig database catalogs 51 fish and aberration entries, but that catalog is not a list of specimens one player must deliver to the Scientist. The available sources do not establish a reliable, complete location-by-location guide to the later requests, so the first set should not be treated as the full quest list.

The game’s official site describes DREDGE as a single-player fishing adventure and identifies The Iron Rig as available. For the first Scientist request, use the four entries above; for later sets, confirm the specimen and its habitat in your in-game request and fish-finding information rather than assuming every DLC fish is a Scientist delivery.
