First check Blizzard’s current Overwatch news or Battle.net launcher: the historical PTR instructions explain how access worked, but current public PTR availability and access steps have not been verified. If Blizzard announces an active public test, use that announcement’s instructions. Historically, players selected “PTR: Overwatch” in Battle.net, installed a separate client, then launched it.
How the Overwatch PTR worked
Blizzard’s historical instructions describe this launcher process for a public test. They are useful if Blizzard makes a PTR available again, but they are not confirmation that the option or client is currently available.

- Restart the Battle.net desktop app.
- Open Overwatch from the left-hand menu.
- Open the REGION/ACCOUNT dropdown and select “PTR: Overwatch.”
- Choose Install, then wait for the PTR client to install and update.
- When installation and updates finish, choose Play.

What to check if PTR is missing from Battle.net
If Blizzard has announced an active public PTR but the option does not appear, first confirm that the announcement applies to your platform and account. Blizzard’s historical troubleshooting advice was to launch and log into the regular Overwatch game, exit it, then try opening the PTR again. That advice comes from the historical instructions and may not match a current launcher or test.

Historical account and platform requirements
For the PTR described in Blizzard’s older instructions, the Battle.net account needed an Overwatch Windows PC license in good standing, and Overwatch had to have been installed and launched on that account at least once. Blizzard’s historical FAQ also described the PTR as Windows PC only, with accounts from regions other than China eligible to participate in a test hosted in the Americas. It warned that players outside the United States could experience lower performance and higher latency. These are historical conditions, not verified requirements for any current test.
Can you use the PTR to try new heroes early?
Historically, yes: Blizzard’s March 2, 2017 PTR announcement included Orisa as a new hero in its patch information. That confirms the PTR was used to test new hero content in that build; it does not establish which heroes, if any, are available on a current PTR. Check the active test announcement for its specific content and access window.

Does PTR progress carry over to the live game?
Blizzard’s historical FAQ said PTR progress did not transfer to the live game and real-money purchases were disabled on the PTR. Those details describe the historical environment and should not be assumed to apply to a future or current test without confirmation.
