“A new era” is best understood as a description of Cyberpunk 2077’s 2023 Update 2.0 and the Phantom Liberty expansion—not as an official CD PROJEKT RED slogan or announcement. The two releases arrived as separate things: Update 2.0 was announced as a free game update for PC and next-generation consoles, while Phantom Liberty was a separately released expansion.
What was Cyberpunk 2077’s “new era”?
On August 22, 2023, CD PROJEKT RED presented Update 2.0 as the largest update to the game at that point and said it would be released free of charge for PC and next-generation consoles. The update was presented alongside Phantom Liberty, but they were not the same release. CD PROJEKT RED’s 2023 reporting documents the announcement and its planned scope.

The phrase “official new era” is an editorial way to describe that milestone, not a verified quote or campaign slogan from the studio. The evidence for the phrase does not establish a different or later announcement.
Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty: what was the difference?
| Release | What it was | Cost and announced platforms | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update 2.0 | A major game update, described by CD PROJEKT RED as the largest update yet at the time. | Announced as free for PC and next-generation consoles. | Presented August 22, 2023; the cited announcement described a planned release rather than establishing current availability. |
| Phantom Liberty | A separate expansion, not part of the free Update 2.0. | Separate expansion; current price and availability are not established by the cited 2023 source. | Released September 26, 2023, according to CD PROJEKT S.A.’s 2023 annual report. |
The distinction matters if you are trying to understand what the 2023 announcement meant: the free update and the expansion were related, but the expansion was a separate product.

For readers interested in the setting beyond the game, CD PROJEKT S.A.’s annual report records that the tie-in novel Cyberpunk 2077: No Coincidence was published worldwide in paperback, e-book, and audiobook formats in August 2023. It is optional reading, not something required to understand Update 2.0 or Phantom Liberty. The annual report lists the publication details.
