How Steam’s Free to Keep promotions work
Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Free to Keep as a promotion in which a package grants players a permanent license to the game. The package also includes a callout that shows how much time remains in the claim period. The key point is that the claim window, not the game’s price, is what expires. Once the window closes, the license is no longer available through that promotion, even though the game remains on the store.

Why the Steam Autumn Sale is not the deadline
GamesRadar reported that the 2026 Steam Autumn Sale ran from October 1 and ended on October 8 at 10 AM PT, 5 PM GMT, or 1 PM ET. That sale changes prices, which is a separate mechanism from a free-to-keep claim period. A sale ending does not remove a Free to Keep license that has already been granted, and a sale ending is not evidence that a free game is about to expire. (GamesRadar: Steam Sale Guide)
Keep the two calendars apart when you search. A discount countdown and a free-claim countdown can appear on the same page, and they often end at different times.

How to confirm a one-day deadline yourself
- Open the game’s Steam store page while signed in, and look for a Free to Keep or promotional banner. Read the time-remaining callout rather than relying on a headline or social post.
- Note the end time and its time zone. Steam callouts and SteamDB both use UTC as a reference, so convert the deadline to your local time before deciding it is one day away.
- Cross-check the offer on SteamDB’s free-promotions tracker. If the tracker shows a different window from the store page, trust the store page and treat the tracker entry as a possible older listing.
- Confirm whether the item is a base game, a DLC, or a pack. A pack may grant an add-on for a game you already own, which changes what you actually receive.
- Claim the offer before the callout reaches zero. A license granted through a Free to Keep package is permanent, so claiming early costs nothing beyond the time it takes.
Why a headline can say “one day left” when the listings do not
- Time-zone rounding. A deadline of 17:00 UTC is 10 AM Pacific and 1 PM Eastern, so it can look like “tomorrow” in one region and “today” in another.
- A different promotion. Steam runs many discount and free events at once, and a headline may be describing a sale or a separate giveaway rather than a Free to Keep package.
- A stale article. Free-game roundups are often reused, so a post written for a previous promotion can keep circulating after its window has closed.
If none of these explains what you saw, the store page is the authority. Steam’s own callout, not a roundup, determines whether a claim is still open.
