Metal Gear has no official ranking of strength, so the answer depends on whether you count cybernetically enhanced characters. If you do, cyborg-era Raiden from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the strongest plausible answer for raw physical combat power. If you limit the list to unaugmented humans, Big Boss and Solid Snake are the strongest defensible candidates. Both answers are interpretations of the franchise’s character descriptions, not a ranking published by Konami.
What “strongest” has to mean in this series
The question mixes three different comparisons, and the answer changes depending on which one you use:
- Raw physical power, such as lifting, striking, and surviving damage. This favors enhanced characters.
- Combat capability, meaning training, technique, and the ability to win fights against trained opponents. This is where veteran soldiers compete.
- Mission effectiveness, meaning how often a character actually stops a threat. Story records favor the veterans who handled the major Metal Gear crises.
Two more filters matter. First, which version of a character you mean, since Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2 and Raiden in Metal Gear Rising are at different points in his life and training. Second, in-story ability is not the same as gameplay mechanics. A character’s speed or damage output in a playable game is a design choice, so this article does not use in-game numbers as evidence of canon strength.
Enhanced fighters: cyborg Raiden and the Cyborg Ninja
Raiden in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Konami’s official Japanese-language Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty history page describes Raiden as a new FOXHOUND operative who had completed VR training but had no prior live combat mission. That is the rookie version of the character. Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots history page later notes that he rescued Sunny after the Big Shell incident.

Those pages do not describe his cyborg feats. The case for him as the strongest character rests on the cyborg form shown in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, which the official history pages cited here do not detail. Because of that, this article does not list specific Rising fights or feats as established facts. Any claim about how he fares against particular opponents should be checked against the game itself.
The Cyborg Ninja
Konami’s Metal Gear Solid history and character page describes the Cyborg Ninja as an enhanced combatant wearing a full-body reinforced exoskeleton. The page says the character can cut steel beams with a high-frequency blade and cut down bullets in flight. The Japanese wording is 「高周波ブレードで鉄骨を切断し、放たれた銃弾を斬り落とす」, which translates roughly as cutting steel girders with a high-frequency blade and slicing down fired bullets.

That description establishes extraordinary capability. It does not, by itself, place the Cyborg Ninja above or below cyborg-era Raiden, because the official text does not compare the two.
Unaugmented soldiers: Big Boss, Solid Snake, and the clones
Naked Snake, later Big Boss
Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater history page identifies Naked Snake as the future Big Boss. It says he learned combat, destruction, and intelligence skills from The Boss, and that the two developed Close Quarters Combat (CQC) together. Of the human characters, his official credentials are the most extensive in the franchise’s early history.

Solid Snake and Old Snake
Konami’s official description of Metal Gear Solid credits Solid Snake with subduing the Outer Heaven uprising and the Zanzibar Land disturbance, and presents him as an infiltration specialist. The Metal Gear Solid 4 page says Old Snake had repeatedly stopped Metal Gear threats, but was in his forties and aging rapidly by that point. His combat record is strong, but his physical peak is shown in earlier games than his later appearances.
Liquid and Solidus Snake
Konami’s Peace Walker backstory explains that Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, and later Solidus Snake were created from Big Boss’s DNA through Les Enfants Terribles. A shared genetic source does not show that the clones fight at the same level. Their official pages establish their origin, not a ranking against Big Boss or Solid Snake.

Version and date labels
Konami’s history pages attach story periods to each entry. These are labels for the story, not dates for a strength comparison.
| Entry | Story period on Konami’s page | What the page says about the strongest-candidate characters |
|---|---|---|
| Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater | Set in 1964 | Naked Snake learns combat skills from The Boss and develops CQC with them; he is identified as the future Big Boss. |
| Metal Gear Solid | Set in 2005 | Solid Snake subdues the Outer Heaven uprising and Zanzibar Land disturbance; the Cyborg Ninja entry describes exoskeleton and blade capabilities. |
| Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty | Set across 2007–2009 | Raiden is a rookie FOXHOUND operative with VR training and no prior live combat mission. |
| Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots | Page marked 2014 | Old Snake is in his forties and aging rapidly; Raiden rescues Sunny after the Big Shell incident. |
| Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake | Not stated on the archive character page | Solid Snake’s skills and profile are listed; no strength comparison is given. |
Where the official sources stop
- No official Konami all-character strength ranking was found in the pages cited here.
- No published strength statistic, named study, or quantified power figure exists for these characters in those pages, so none is quoted here.
- The character descriptions are Konami’s own prose, not quotations from a named character or spokesperson.
- The official pages describe capabilities and accomplishments. They do not decide which character would win a hypothetical fight.
Read this way, the answer is cyborg Raiden if enhancement counts and physical power is the measure, and Big Boss or Solid Snake if only unaugmented humans count.
