Which Borderlands 3 Character Is Best for Solo Play?

For a first solo campaign in Borderlands 3, FL4K is the most forgiving choice, thanks to his pet and skill trees that all work alone. Moze, Zane and Amara suit different playstyles.

For a first solo campaign, FL4K is the most forgiving starting point. His pet deals damage and draws enemy attention, and GameSpot’s 2019 FL4K guide says all three of his skill trees contribute to solo play and that solo players will probably have the easiest time with him. Moze is an equally easy alternative if you want a Gunner with a mech-centered style. Zane and Amara are viable solo picks too, but they suit players whose preferred combat style matches their kit and who are willing to build toward it. No single Vault Hunter is best in every situation, and the right answer depends on how you like to fight and how far you plan to push into optimized endgame play.

Why FL4K is the default pick for a first solo run

FL4K is the Beastmaster, and his kit is built around a companion that keeps working while you do. Three points from the guides explain why he is the usual first recommendation:

  • The pet is a real combat asset. Windows Central highlights its damage, its ability to distract enemies, and a potential healing synergy.
  • Every skill tree is usable alone. GameSpot’s FL4K guide, published 2019-09-23, states that all three trees contribute to solo play.
  • The pet can bring FL4K back. GameSpot’s character guide notes a skill that lets the pet revive him.

Treat the pet as a strong asset, not a guarantee of safety. It improves your odds in a fight, but it does not make you invulnerable, and you still need to play with awareness of your health and positioning.

The other three Vault Hunters for solo play

Moze: the Gunner for players who want a mech-centered fantasy

Windows Central groups Moze with FL4K as naturally suited to solo play from the start. The guides cited here do not establish a ranking between the two, so the choice comes down to fantasy. Pick Moze if the Gunner identity and mech-centered play appeal to you more than a companion pet.

Zane: mobility, gun damage, and two active skills

Zane’s guide on PlayBorderlands emphasizes mobility and gun damage. It describes running SNTNL and the Digi-Clone together, with movement and kills supporting his damage. That gives him a distinct playstyle, and Windows Central describes him as able to perform strongly once his build has developed over the course of play. Choose Zane if you like staying mobile and working with gadgets or a clone.

Amara: close-range damage, recovery, and an instant revive

PC Gamer’s 2020 build guide describes Amara solo builds centered on close-range damage, health recovery, and an instant-revive skill. Windows Central, like its note on Zane, says she can perform strongly with builds developed as you play. Amara suits players who enjoy elemental or melee-oriented combat and do not mind building toward that style.

Mechanics that change a solo run

Respeccing your skills

PC Gamer’s 2020 guide describes respeccing as possible at a Quick-Change machine for a fee. That means your first skill allocation does not have to lock you into one build. The fee and machine details come from an older guide, so confirm them in your current version of the game before you plan around them.

Build progression and endgame

The FL4K and Zane build guides cover progression up to level 72 and into Mayhem. Their specific skill and gear recommendations depend on the build being used and may age as balance changes. PC Gamer’s build guide is a useful look at possible playstyles, but it should not be treated as current advice on what is strongest.

Where this guidance stops

The guides cited here do not establish a current, authoritative ranking of all four Vault Hunters for optimized endgame or Mayhem play, so this article does not claim one. The GameSpot FL4K guide dates from 2019-09-23 and the PC Gamer build guide from 2020-03-11. The Windows Central and PlayBorderlands pages cited here carry no publication date in the copies used. Balance changes since these guides were written may shift which build feels strongest, so check current patch notes before committing to a build for a long campaign.
