The Bad Magpie demo is listed on Steam and Xbox. Steam explicitly marks its demo free and gives an October 8, 2026 release date; Xbox’s listing reports August 10, 2026, so the storefronts do not agree on a single launch date. Xbox describes the demo as playable on PC and handheld, while Steam lists Windows and macOS support.

The two storefront dates differ, so treat them as each store’s own listed date rather than a universal release date.
What you do in the demo
Bad Magpie is a single-player narrative adventure about a one-winged magpie, a missing flock, shiny objects and a fallen star. The demo drops you into a corner of one of the full game’s three areas. Its immediate goal is to explore and collect meteorite shards scattered around the map.
Play revolves around hopping through a compact, nonlinear world and interacting with objects: peck, steal, combine and meddle. The official Steam description gives examples including using a megaphone to shatter glass, pecking flint to start fires and dropping an apple into oil. It says, “Every puzzle has multiple solutions. Most of them are intentional.” The demo has a few lines of text before and after gameplay; the full game’s story is conveyed through gameplay, according to the listing.

A June 10, 2026 Xbox Wire preview by editor Will Fulton described a roughly half-hour preview build in which the injured bird could hop but not fly. Fulton reported that this preview’s turn-in required 20 meteorite shards, with 30 available in the area he played. Those quantities describe that preview build, not confirmed totals for the currently listed demo or the full game.
PC requirements and languages
Steam lists Windows 10 64-bit and DirectX 12, or macOS 12 Monterey or later. The demo listing supports interface and subtitle text in 14 languages:

Steam displays memory and storage figures of “4 MB.” Because those figures appear unusually small and are presented as-is by the store, they are not a reliable basis for deciding whether a PC has enough space or memory.

Milktooth’s official site says Bad Magpie is coming in 2027, without giving a firm date. Xbox Wire’s June 10, 2026 announcement says the planned release includes Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud and Game Pass, with Xbox Play Anywhere. These are announced plans, not confirmation of a specific launch day. The full-game Steam listing currently says “Coming soon” and carries a Tribeca Festival Official Selection 2026 laurel.
