Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s August 11, 2026 post and Bethesda’s reply both hid the title behind eight asterisks, which has led fans to assume the name is eight letters long. Nothing in the reported statements confirms that count or the wording behind it.
What Xbox actually showed
On August 11, 2026, Sharma posted on X that she had seen a “live playthrough” of the game that morning. As GameSpot reproduced the post, it read: “Live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI: ******** this morning. The scale and grandeur are incredible. The story is even greater.”
The key detail is that she watched a playthrough, which means an internal build was shown to an executive. It does not mean the public has seen gameplay. Sharma’s X post itself could not be opened for the reporting, so the wording above is taken from GameSpot’s reproduction of it, not from a checked copy of the original post.
Bethesda’s reply and what the asterisks do and do not establish
Bethesda Game Studios answered in the same redacted format. Gadgets 360, reporting on August 12, 2026, quoted the reply: “It was great being able to show you ********. Thank you for the kind words and a wonderful visit.”

The matching redaction is why the subtitle has become a talking point. It suggests that a title exists and that both companies were deliberately withholding it. It does not prove three things that readers often assume:
- Length. Eight asterisks may mirror the title’s length, or they may be a placeholder. Neither company has said how many letters the title contains.
- Wording. The asterisks do not reveal any word, and no official source has confirmed a particular name.
- Timing. A redacted title is not an announcement date, and it says nothing about when a public reveal might happen.
What Bethesda has confirmed
The most direct official statement is Bethesda Game Studios’ update dated July 17, 2026. It says The Elder Scrolls VI is the studio’s “primary development focus,” that the majority of the team is working on it, and that the team is playing it every day. It also states that the game is being built on Creation Engine 3. The update does not give a release date.

Subtitle theories are fan speculation
Several subtitle guesses have circulated, including “Sentinel.” Treat these as fan theories. None has been confirmed by Bethesda or Xbox, and a later August 2026 report on subtitle speculation (Softonic, October 8, 2026) describes them as theories rather than leaks. Reporting that repeats a guessed name as the “known” title is going beyond the evidence.

What would change the picture
- An official Bethesda or Xbox statement that gives the full title.
- A release date or launch window, which neither company has provided.
- A public gameplay trailer or showcase segment, which had not been released as of the most recent reporting reviewed.
Until one of these appears, the most accurate answer to “Is The Elder Scrolls VI playable yet?” is that Sharma saw an internal playthrough, and the public has not received a gameplay reveal in the reporting reviewed.
Franchise context
Bethesda’s July 17, 2026 statement also cited more than 65 million copies of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim sold and said players were still exploring that game 15 years after its release. That figure concerns Skyrim, not VI, and it does not indicate anything about the new game’s title or schedule.
In short, the eight asterisks show that Xbox and Bethesda are teasing a title. They do not show what the title says or how long it is.
