GregTech: New Horizons is the marathon of modded Minecraft: a hardcore technical pack on Minecraft 1.7.10 with hundreds of mods and, according to its official site, more than 3,900 quests guiding you from the stone age to the Stargate. Even the record-holding team needed over three weeks of play for its fastest Stargate run. A journey that long is far better shared, and in GTNH a dedicated server is not optional for groups: the official wiki notes that the pack’s quest book does not support LAN play, so multiplayer means running a server.

Short version: the latest stable release is 2.8.4. Download the server zip from gtnewhorizons.com, preferably the build for Java 17 to 25, and keep all players on the very same GTNH version. The wiki puts the floor at 6 GB of RAM, plus half a gigabyte per extra player early on, rising to an extra gigabyte per player later in the game, on a CPU with strong single-thread speed.

Why run a server at all?

Beyond making multiplayer possible, the wiki lists benefits that matter even to a small group. A separate server can improve ticks per second compared with an integrated world on the same machine, chunk-loaded bases keep producing resources around the clock, and the quest book supports party progress, so a team shares its quest completions. The cost is upkeep: restarts, backups, updates and the occasional lag hunt become someone’s job.

Sizing for the long haul

GTNH’s memory needs grow with progress, so plan for where the group will be in a few months, not just on day one. Using the wiki’s formula, four players start at about 7.5 GB in the early game and need around 9 GB once they reach Ultimate Voltage; eight players climb from 9.5 GB to about 13 GB. Storage follows the same curve: every new dimension adds to the world, and each backup is roughly the size of the world itself, so leave generous free space. A processor with strong single-thread speed matters at every stage, because a late-game base pushes far more work through that one main thread than an early one.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pick the right server build

GTNH publishes two server zips for every release, and choosing the wrong one for your Java version makes the server fail to start:

Server build Runs on When to use it
Java 17–25 build Java 17 or newer, up to 25 The default. The wiki strongly recommends it for its garbage collection and performance on modern hardware
Java 8 build Java 8 Legacy setups, mainly hybrid servers built on Thermos

From gtnewhorizons.com/downloads and the GTNH wiki’s Server Setup page, checked 10 October 2026.

One detail surprises newcomers: players do not need to match the server’s Java build. Someone on the Java 8 client can join a Java 17+ server and the reverse. What must match exactly is the GTNH version number, so a 2.8.4 server only accepts 2.8.4 clients.

Hardware the wiki recommends

  • Processor: an i3 or i5 or better, judged by single-thread speed rather than core count, because Minecraft runs its world on one thread. The wiki’s guide is one thread at 2.5 GHz, ideally up to two threads at 3.5 GHz.
  • Memory: 6 GB plus 0.5 GB per extra player in the early game, and 6 GB plus 1 GB per extra player from the Ultimate Voltage tier onward.
  • Storage: 20 GB or more, preferably an SSD. Expect about 1 to 2 GB for an early-game world, more as other dimensions are explored, and the same again for every backup.
  • Connection: for a home server, upload speed is usually the bottleneck, and players closer to the server get lower latency.

Letting a host do the work

A GTNH template takes the setup off your hands, and for a pack that runs for months, offloads the upkeep too. Godlike.Host offers GT New Horizons as a one-click template on Minecraft 1.7.10 with Forge, describing it as a pack that can keep a server busy for months. Its card suggests 6 GB, its FAQ calls 4 GB the minimum and 6 GB or more the safer start, and it strongly recommends Java 25 for the server, which sits within the official 17 to 25 range. If you need a specific GTNH release, it lets you upload a server pack of your own through the panel or SFTP and pick the loader. It also backs servers up for free, three times a day at most, protects them against DDoS attacks and offers 10 locations.

(Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
  • 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
  • Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

One thing to confirm: Godlike’s GTNH page shows Minecraft 1.7.10 rather than a GTNH release number, so look up the installed version in the panel and have every player download that exact release.

Self-hosting options compared

The wiki maps out four do-it-yourself routes, each with its own trade-off:

  • Windows at home: free if the hardware is already on hand and gives full control, but needs port forwarding or a tunnel and depends on your PC’s uptime and connection.
  • A Linux VPS or dedicated server: good performance, root access and no exposure of your home network, at a monthly cost and with Linux knowledge required.
  • Oracle Cloud’s free tier: powerful hardware at no cost, in exchange for a complex setup, capacity limits and the risk of account termination if its policies are broken.
  • Docker containers: reproducible and easy to move, but an extra layer to learn and debug.

For beginners, the wiki points to managed game hosting. If you host from home, its security advice is worth following: port forwarding can expose your network if misconfigured, share the address only with trusted players, consider a mesh VPN such as Tailscale for a small private group, and keep backups on a separate device.

Installing the server yourself

  1. Download the server zip for 2.8.4, or your chosen release, from gtnewhorizons.com. The wiki says server packs should only come from there or from the official Discord’s announcements.
  2. Install a Java runtime that matches the zip. For the 17 to 25 build, the wiki suggests a JRE from Adoptium, matched to your operating system and processor.
  3. Extract the zip into its own folder. The Java 17+ build comes fully configured, so do not rearrange its files.
  4. Start the server with the start script that matches your build and system, accept Mojang’s EULA in eula.txt when asked, and start it again.
  5. Check the world type. The wiki says the level type in server.properties should always be RWG, the pack’s own world generator.
  6. Whitelist everyone, yourself included, from the console with whitelist add followed by the player name.
  7. Connect. On the same machine, use localhost or 127.0.0.1 on the default port 25565; friends need your external address with port forwarding, or a tunnel such as Tailscale.

Running GTNH on a Linux VPS

The wiki keeps a dedicated Linux guide, written around one provider but applicable to most. The general pattern: choose a VPS with strong single-thread performance and enough memory for the wiki’s formula plus the operating system, install a Java runtime that matches your server zip, and upload the extracted server folder over SFTP. Run the server as an ordinary user, inside tmux or screen or as a service that restarts after a crash, and open only SSH and port 25565 to the outside. Because a VPS keeps no copy of your world anywhere else, point at least one backup at storage you control, so a lost server never means a lost Stargate project.

Backups, chunk loading and maintenance

GTNH ships with ServerUtilities, which handles much of a server’s day-to-day care:

  • Backups are on by default. The interval and the number of copies kept live in serverutilities/serverutilities.cfg. Watch disk space: the wiki warns that running out can corrupt the world.
  • Chunk loading is opt-in. Set chunk_claiming and chunk_loading to true in the world section of the same file, and enable ranks if you want to control how many chunks each player can claim.
  • Machines never sleep. Chunk-loaded factories keep producing around the clock, which is a big reason to run a server, but multiblock machines can break down without automated maintenance, so build maintenance hatches into your plans.

Updating to a new GTNH release

The wiki’s update procedure is careful for good reason:

  1. Pick the release, using the latest stable one unless your group wants to test.
  2. Download the new server zip and back up the entire server folder.
  3. Delete the config, libraries and mods folders, plus resources and scripts if present. Keep a copy of config/JourneyMapServer from your backup.
  4. On the Java 17+ build, also remove java9args.txt, lwjgl3ify-forgePatches.jar and the two startserver-java9 scripts.
  5. Copy in the matching folders and files from the new release.
  6. Re-apply your custom settings by hand, using the backup as a reference, rather than copying old config folders over the new ones.
  7. Restore the JourneyMapServer folder, which holds your world’s map ID; without it, players lose their saved map data for the server.

Then update every player to the same release before reopening, and post the version number somewhere the whole group will see it, such as your Discord or the server’s message of the day.

A checklist before you invite the group

  • Note the GTNH version the server runs and share it with every player.
  • Confirm the level type is RWG and that the world generated correctly.
  • Whitelist each player, and give operator rights only to the admins who manage the server.
  • Check that a ServerUtilities backup has been written and that you know where it lives.
  • Decide on chunk-loading rules before players build their first factories.
  • Test a connection from outside your network, through the port forward or the tunnel you chose.

Fixing common GTNH server problems

  • The server will not start: the zip and the Java version do not match; use the Java 8 build with Java 8, or the 17 to 25 build with Java 17 to 25.
  • Players are refused at login: their GTNH version differs from the server’s, or they are not on the whitelist.
  • Friends cannot reach the server: check the port forward for 25565, or switch to a tunnel such as Tailscale.
  • Lag in the mid and late game: single-thread CPU speed is the limit more often than memory; trim chunk-loaded areas and check for stalled machines.
  • Disk full warnings: reduce the number of backups kept in ServerUtilities, or add storage before the world is at risk.

Can players use a different Java version from the server?

Yes. Players may run either the Java 8 or Java 17+ client; only the GTNH version number has to match exactly.

How much RAM does a GTNH server need?

The wiki asks for 6 GB plus 0.5 GB per extra player early on, rising to 6 GB plus 1 GB per extra player from Ultimate Voltage onward.

Why can’t my group just use LAN?

The quest book GTNH relies on does not support LAN, according to the wiki, so a dedicated server is the way to share progress.

Should I run the latest nightly build?

Not for a group world. The wiki cautions that dev builds, betas and release candidates are for testing and may contain game-breaking bugs, so stick to the latest stable release.

Does the server need its own Minecraft licence?

No. The wiki notes that the server itself needs no licence, but every player who connects must have a valid Minecraft account, and the server must be online to authenticate them.

Which launcher should players use?

The GTNH team strongly advises Prism Launcher, noting that players also get better performance by installing its Java 17-25 archive. Technic and CurseForge versions exist but are offered only for convenience.

Where should I download the server files?

Only from gtnewhorizons.com, or from links in the official Discord’s announcements channel.
