What to know before you start
Moon Studios launched the game in Early Access on April 18, 2024. Its systems are still changing: the studio’s September 1, 2026 notice moved its planned 1.0 launch from October 2026 to March 2027. Treat that date as a plan, not a guarantee, and be cautious about guides that present a permanent endgame build or route.
For a beginner, a useful loop is to explore at a manageable pace, read enemy attacks, use food deliberately, and return to Sacrament to make use of its services. Let current tooltips, quest markers, and interface cues guide you rather than relying on assumptions from another action RPG.
Learn combat timing before spending stamina
Watch an enemy’s attack and choose your dodge deliberately instead of rolling repeatedly or attacking through every opening. In the April 30, 2025 Breach notes, Moon Studios says Quickstep has more invulnerability frames than medium roll; medium roll no longer has invulnerability throughout its entire animation, leaving its ending vulnerable. These are update-specific rules, so check the current build.

Timing can also affect interruptions: the Breach notes say a hit during an enemy’s attack is more effective at interrupting than a hit near the end of that attack. Look for a safe opening, and pay attention to the stagger bar shown on the HUD. Don’t assume every enemy or weapon will react the same way.

Prepare for encounter-limited healing
In the Breach ruleset, food has no cooldown but its use is limited per combat encounter. Moon Studios’ 2025 notes say a player starts with five food uses per combat encounter, with the limit increasable through the Watcher using Plague Ichor. This is update-specific: check the live interface in case a later patch has changed it.
Food ingredients can be eaten, but their descriptions say they are more effective when used in a recipe. Prepare food before difficult encounters when you can, and avoid treating healing as an unlimited recovery loop.

Choose a weapon that fits your attributes
Pick a weapon whose moveset you enjoy, then check its attribute requirements and scaling before investing. Moon Studios’ Breach notes say weapon-upgrade damage multiplies with attribute damage, so upgrades and relevant attributes both matter. The game also displays a graphic and prompt when you do not meet a weapon’s attribute requirements.

The Breach notes identify Fillmore as the weapon-upgrade vendor and Mira & Meri as the armor-upgrade vendors. Gear can also roll at an upgrade level influenced by player and enemy level under the dynamic gear system described in those notes. Don’t hoard every early item for a speculative late-game setup; use current descriptions and your actual needs.
Explore, return to Sacrament, and use the cues
Moon Studios’ Breach notes say fast travel unlocks automatically when you reach Sacrament. They also describe one-way doors that indicate when they cannot be opened from a particular side, an enemy stagger bar on the HUD, and items in house or community chests that can be used directly at vendors. Use these cues and check quest markers and item tooltips rather than guessing how a system works.

- Pay attention to Whispers, doors, and other route cues as you progress.
- Return to Sacrament to use available services and fast travel.
- Check vendors and item descriptions; vendor stock has daily limits according to the Breach notes.
What about the Crucible?
The Crucible is an optional repeatable roguelite dungeon, not a requirement for understanding the opening story. Moon Studios’ July 25, 2024 overview describes randomized chambers, Echoes that customize a run with buffs and effects, and Traces dropped by enemies that activate Echoes.
That overview says the Crucible opens after reaching Sacrament and completing the first campaign quest by activating “Spoken & Unspoken” with Elsa. Because this description predates the Breach notes, confirm the current unlock flow in-game before following an older route guide.

Avoid treating any early setup as a definitive build. Compare weapons using their reach, speed, stamina demand, attribute requirements and scaling, and rune options; compare defensive choices using dodge timing, shield movement constraints, armor weight and defense, and upgrade cost. The research does not establish a universally best weapon, armor class, or attribute spread.

Moon Studios’ September 18, 2026 class-system preview announced 24 Classes, 280+ Traits, 6 Trait Slots, and 6 Factions. These are previewed upcoming features, not safe assumptions about the current live build; the preview says the 24 classes are planned for an Open Beta in December. Verify their status in current official news before building advice around them.
