Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Steam has no universal “Reset Game Data” button. To start a game over, you usually need to remove or rename its local save/profile data and, if Steam Cloud is enabled, deliberately replace the older Cloud copy with the new empty state. Reinstalling the game alone often does not remove saves.
The safest general method is: back up the data, disable Steam Cloud for that game, remove only the verified save or profile files, launch the game and create a new save, then re-enable Cloud and choose the new local files if Steam displays a synchronization conflict. This resets offline progress in many games, but it cannot guarantee the removal of achievements, purchases, online characters, or progression stored on a publisher’s servers.
Before resetting: decide which data you actually want to erase
“Erase the game data” can mean several different things. Steam saves, game settings, achievements, and online progression are separate layers, often stored in different places. Identify your target before deleting anything:
| Desired result | Data that may need to be reset |
|---|---|
| Start a new campaign | The relevant local save files and possibly their Steam Cloud copies |
| Remove one save slot | That slot through the game’s save manager, or the specific file if the game uses separate files |
| Restore default settings | Configuration files, and sometimes registry or launcher settings—not necessarily saves |
| Remove all offline progress | Saves, profiles, unlock files, settings, and possibly mod or game-specific metadata |
| Stop an old save from returning | The local files plus the Steam Cloud synchronization state and any other device uploading the old data |
| Remove Steam achievements or stats | Separate Steam account-level stats and achievement data |
| Remove an online character, rank, inventory, or battle-pass progress | The publisher’s account or server-side data, normally through the game’s support process |
| Perform a clean reinstall | Game installation files, plus separately stored saves, settings, mods, and Cloud data if required |
Deleting a save normally does not delete achievements, playtime, purchases, DLC entitlements, inventory, friends, account records, or server-side characters. It also may not remove settings if the game stores its configuration separately.

The safest quick method
- Close the game and make a backup. Copy the documented save/profile folder to a separate location, with a dated name such as
GameName-save-backup-2026-08-10. - Disable Steam Cloud for this game. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open General, and turn off the game’s Cloud setting. Wording can differ slightly between Steam client versions.
- Quit Steam completely. Use Steam → Exit, rather than merely closing the window, before changing files.
- Rename or remove only verified save/profile data. Renaming a folder to
Saves.oldis safer than permanent deletion because it lets you restore the old progress. - Launch with Cloud still disabled. Create a new profile, campaign, character, or save, then exit normally so the game writes its new files.
- Re-enable Steam Cloud. If Steam presents a conflict, choose the option that keeps or uploads the new local files. An option such as Upload to the Steam Cloud keeps the new reset state; Download to this machine keeps the Cloud copy, which may be the old save. Labels can change, so read what each option means.
- Verify the result. Restart the game and confirm that the old saves are absent, a new save survives a restart, and the old progress does not return from Cloud or another device.
Do not launch the game repeatedly while troubleshooting a returning save. Each launch can create another synchronization event or overwrite evidence that would help identify the correct folder.
Step-by-step: reset a Steam game that uses Steam Cloud
1. Check whether Cloud is enabled
Steam Cloud is optional and game-dependent. Developers choose whether a title uses Steam Cloud, which files are synchronized, and which folders are included. Steam supports both its Cloud API and Auto-Cloud system; it does not automatically synchronize every file in every Steam game. The Steamworks Cloud documentation explains these integration models.
For one game, check the setting here:
Steam → Library → right-click the game → Properties → General
Look for the game-specific Steam Cloud option. If you need to disable Cloud for every supported title, Steam also provides a global control under:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Steam → Settings → Cloud
Use the per-game switch whenever possible. Disabling Cloud globally affects other games and can create avoidable synchronization problems.
If there is no Cloud setting, the game may not support Steam Cloud through Steam, may use a separate launcher or account-based save system, or you may be looking at a demo, beta, playtest, or another application entry. Check the game’s store features, official documentation, and publisher support rather than assuming that Cloud is active or inactive.
2. Back up the files before changing them
Close the game first. Then copy any likely save and profile folders to a separate folder, external drive, or cloud-storage location. A backup should include:
- The game’s documented save folder.
- The game’s configuration or profile folder if you want a full offline reset.
userdata<SteamUserID><AppID>if a matching Steam folder exists.- Save data used by a publisher launcher, such as a launcher-specific Documents or AppData folder.
- Screenshots, mods, custom maps, or other files that you want to preserve.
Steam notes that third-party developers choose their own save locations. Its Steam backup guidance recommends checking the game’s community, website, or developer for the correct location. Do not assume that a folder named save is the only data that matters.

3. Disable Cloud and exit Steam
Turn off Cloud from the game’s Properties → General page. Then close the game and quit Steam completely. This matters because Steam can synchronize supported files around a game session, and changed files may be uploaded when the game exits. Deleting files while the client or another launcher is still active can allow the old state to be downloaded or rewritten.
4. Find the actual save and profile files
Steam’s installation browser is useful, but it does not prove that saves are stored in the installation directory. Open it with:
Steam Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Browse
This opens the game’s binaries and installed content. Many games instead store saves in Documents, AppData, Saved Games, a platform-specific home directory, or a Proton compatibility prefix. Valve’s Steam installation and game-location guidance also explains that Steam libraries can be installed in locations other than the default Windows library.

Before deleting a folder, verify it using the game’s official support information or a game-specific data reference such as PCGamingWiki’s game-data directory. Compare filenames, modification dates, and the game’s behavior. If possible, rename the folder first instead of deleting it.
5. Create a clean local state
With Cloud disabled, rename or move the verified save/profile data. Do not remove the entire Steam directory or blindly delete the entire game installation. Start the game and use its new-game, new-profile, or character-creation flow. Some games create their initial files only after you complete the first setup or save once.
Exit normally after creating the new state. Then inspect the save location again. A newly created file or folder confirms that you found the active location; if nothing new appears, you may have removed the wrong directory or the game may be using a launcher or server-based system.
6. Replace the Cloud state deliberately
After the new local save exists, close the game and re-enable its Steam Cloud option. Launch it again. Steam may show a conflict between the local files and Cloud files, either before launch or after the session.

- Choose the choice that keeps the new local files or uploads local files to Steam Cloud if the reset state is the one you want everywhere.
- Do not choose Download to this machine if the Cloud copy is the old progress you are trying to erase.
- Use timestamps as a clue, but confirm the outcome by opening the game. Clock differences and game-specific behavior can make timestamps imperfect evidence.
Valve’s published Steam Cloud conflict guidance describes the two basic outcomes: download the Cloud data to the computer, or upload the local data to Cloud. The exact button names may change, but the decision is the same—keep the copy representing the reset state.
Where Steam games store saves
There is no universal Steam save folder. The location depends on the game, operating system, launcher, and whether the title is native or running through compatibility software. The following are places to inspect, not instructions to delete every folder shown.
Windows
Common locations include:
C:Users<YourName>Documents C:Users<YourName>DocumentsMy Games C:Users<YourName>Saved Games C:Users<YourName>AppDataLocal C:Users<YourName>AppDataLocalLow C:Users<YourName>AppDataRoaming <SteamLibrary>steamappscommon<Game> <SteamInstall>userdata<SteamUserID><AppID>remote
AppData is commonly hidden in Windows Explorer. The default Steam installation library is often C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon, but games may be installed in another Steam library. A save in Documents or AppData can remain after uninstalling the game.
macOS
Common locations include:
~/Documents/ ~/Library/Application Support/ ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/<SteamUserID>/<AppID>/remote/
The user Library folder is hidden by default in Finder; use Go → Go to Folder and enter the path when appropriate. Steam’s Cloud documentation lists macOS roots including the home directory, ~/Library/Application Support/, and ~/Documents/. For questions about removing or reinstalling Steam on a Mac, consult Valve’s official macOS support instructions.
Linux
Native Linux games commonly use locations such as:
~/.local/share/ ~/.config/ ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<SteamUserID>/<AppID>/remote/
Some distributions use a different Steam installation path, so locate the active library rather than copying the example literally.
Steam Deck and Proton
A Windows game running through Proton may store Windows-style saves inside its compatibility prefix:
<SteamLibrary>/steamapps/compatdata/<AppID>/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/
Native Linux titles generally use Linux home-directory locations instead. On a Steam Deck, the library may be on internal storage or a microSD card, and the exact prefix path follows that library. The title’s Proton configuration, not merely the fact that it runs on a Deck, determines the actual location.
Steam Cloud can synchronize files that originate in several of these roots. That is why deleting only userdata, only the installation folder, or only a Documents folder may have no effect—or may remove only part of the game’s state.

Find the correct AppID
Steam’s AppID is the number in the game’s store URL:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/<AppID>/
That number may correspond to a folder under:
<SteamInstall>userdata<SteamUserID><AppID>
Use the AppID to distinguish the game’s Steam data from other titles. However, demos, playtests, betas, and full releases can have different AppIDs. Developers can also configure Cloud storage to be shared between two AppIDs, so an AppID folder is a useful clue, not definitive proof that it contains all of the game’s progress. Steam’s Cloud documentation describes this shared-storage capability.
Reset through the game first when possible
An in-game reset is usually safer than manually deleting files because the game knows how its slots and profile database are organized. Look for options such as:
- Delete Save or Manage Save Data
- Delete Profile or New Profile
- Reset Progress
- New Game
- Delete Character
- Restore Defaults
Read the description carefully. Restore Defaults often resets graphics, controls, audio, or accessibility settings without touching campaign saves. A profile reset may delete several save slots, while a character-delete option may affect only one offline or online character. The game’s own support documentation is the authority for its particular menu.
Reset one save slot instead of everything
If you want to remove only one campaign or slot, use the game’s in-game save manager whenever it has one. Manually deleting a file is safe only when you have confirmed that the game stores each slot separately.
Some games put every slot in one database, profile file, or container. Deleting that one file can erase all campaigns, settings, unlocks, and metadata together. Others use autosaves, quicksaves, manual saves, backups, and a profile file in different folders. Removing only the visible manual-save file may leave the old progress available through an autosave or profile.
Back up first, identify the slot format from the game’s documentation, and test with a renamed folder. If a slot is synchronized through Cloud, apply the same Cloud procedure: create the desired local result, then upload that result rather than allowing the older Cloud copy to replace it.
Reset local saves when Cloud is not involved
If the game has no Steam Cloud and stores progress locally, the process is simpler:
- Back up the documented save and profile folders.
- Quit the game and Steam.
- Rename or move the verified save/profile directory.
- Launch the game and create a new save or profile.
- Restart the game to confirm that the new state persists.
This still may not reset progress if the game uses an external launcher, a publisher account, cross-platform synchronization, or server-side storage. A missing Cloud toggle does not prove that all data is local.
Steam Cloud is synchronization, not a simple recycle bin
Steam Cloud stores only the files selected by the game’s developer and synchronizes them between supported devices. It can synchronize around game sessions, and a local deletion does not automatically mean that the remote copy has been permanently deleted.
In practice:
- Deleting a local save while Cloud remains active can cause the old Cloud copy to return.
- Turning Cloud off stops synchronization for the game; it does not, by itself, erase the Cloud copy.
- Re-enabling Cloud can restore the old state if you choose the Cloud side of a conflict.
- Another computer or Steam Deck using the same account can upload the old files later.
- Some games use different Cloud rules on different operating systems, so files may not behave identically on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Proton.
There is no universal consumer-facing “delete every Cloud save” workflow for all Steam games. Valve provides developer APIs such as ISteamRemoteStorage::FileDelete, which can allow an integrated game to delete a file locally and propagate that deletion to Cloud. The related Cloud Web API requires authenticated developer-style access and is not a general reset button available to every player.
You can inspect Cloud files, where available, at Steam Remote Storage or for a known application at the AppID-specific Remote Storage page. Treat these pages as inspection and reference tools, not a guaranteed delete interface.

Steam achievements and stats are separate
Deleting local saves does not normally remove Steam achievements. Achievements and statistics are associated with Steamworks account data, not simply with the files in your Documents folder. You may start a campaign from zero while your previously earned achievements remain unlocked.
Steamworks documents the following console commands:
achievement_clear <appid> <achievement name> reset_all_stats <appid>
The Steamworks documentation says the Steam console can be launched with:
steam.exe -console
These are not save-deletion commands. achievement_clear targets an achievement, while reset_all_stats concerns Steamworks statistics and is primarily documented in a development/testing context. Depending on the game’s configuration and API behavior, resetting stats may also affect achievements, but it is not a guaranteed factory reset for every game and does not remove local files or publisher-server progression. Use the official Steamworks Stats and Achievements documentation and understand that changes may be permanent before using them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen Steam cannot reset the data
Local deletion cannot reliably remove data that is authoritative on another service. This includes:
- Online characters and inventories
- Multiplayer ranks, ratings, and competitive history
- Battle-pass or seasonal progress
- Purchased items and account-linked unlocks
- Cross-platform progression
- Publisher-managed cloud worlds
- Progress tied to Ubisoft Connect, the EA app, Rockstar Games Launcher, a Microsoft account, or another external account
For those systems, look for an account-management option or contact the game’s official support team. A local Steam reset may clear cached data or offline files while leaving the server-side record untouched. Coverage of Steam Cloud deletion limitations also notes that separate server-side data may not be affected by deleting local or Cloud saves.
Why uninstalling or verifying files usually does not reset a game
Uninstalling and reinstalling
Uninstalling primarily removes or replaces the game’s installation files. Saves may remain in Documents, AppData, Saved Games, a Steam userdata directory, a Proton prefix, or Steam Cloud. Reinstalling can therefore bring the same progress back immediately. The result varies by game and operating system, so say that uninstalling often does not remove saves—not that it never does.
Browse local files
Installed Files → Browse opens the installation directory, not necessarily the user-data directory. Deleting files there can damage the installation without touching saves stored elsewhere.
Deleting the entire userdata AppID folder
The userdata<SteamUserID><AppID> path can contain Cloud-managed files for some games, but it is not universal and may contain more than the one save you intended to erase. Some games save in Documents or AppData while Steam synchronizes those files in the background. Back up the folder and verify its contents before changing it.
Verify integrity of game files
Use Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files when installation files are missing, corrupted, or damaged. Valve’s file-verification guidance describes it as an installation-repair tool, not a save-reset tool. Verification generally leaves user saves and account achievements alone.
Unsupported Cloud console commands
Community guides sometimes recommend commands such as cloud_sync_up <AppID>. Do not make an undocumented command the primary reset method. Valve’s public documentation clearly describes the achievement and stat commands, but does not present that Cloud command as a supported consumer workflow for deleting or replacing every game’s save. Prefer the documented disable-Cloud, create-a-new-local-state, and deliberate-conflict-resolution method.

- Stop launching the game. Repeated launches can synchronize the old data again.
- Disable per-game Cloud. If necessary, temporarily disable Cloud on every device that uses the same Steam account.
- Back up the current files. Preserve the state that is now present before making another change.
- Check the actual save location. Compare it with the game’s official documentation or a game-specific reference. Inspect Documents, Saved Games, AppData, Steam userdata, and—on Linux or Steam Deck—native or Proton paths.
- Check Remote Storage. Use Steam’s Remote Storage page to see whether Steam has files for the title.
- Check external launchers and accounts. A publisher launcher may restore its own save, or the game may recreate a profile from account data.
- Repeat with a rename. Rename the suspected save folder to something like
Saves.old, launch with Cloud disabled, create a new save, and see whether the game generates a replacement folder.
If the old data returns only after Cloud is re-enabled, the likely problem is that the old Cloud copy won the conflict or another device uploaded it. If it returns with Cloud disabled, you probably changed the wrong folder, missed a second save/profile location, or are dealing with an external or server-side system.
Other failure modes
The game starts with old settings but no old saves
Saves and configuration are often separate. Settings may be in AppData, Documents, a profile folder, the registry, or a launcher directory. A full offline reset may require the game-specific configuration folder, but do not delete an entire AppData directory without identifying the folder belonging to that game.
Keep these categories separate:
- Saves: campaigns, slots, worlds, and characters
- Profiles or unlock files: global progression and account-like offline data
- Configuration: controls, graphics, audio, accessibility, and preferences
- Shader and cache files: temporary performance data, usually not progression
- Mods and custom content: user-installed additions that may affect startup or saves
- Crash logs: diagnostic files, not game progress
The game will not launch after files were deleted
Restore the backup first. You may have removed a required profile or configuration file, a launcher dependency, a mod file, or—if the wrong directory was selected—an installation component. Then:
- Restore the renamed or backed-up data.
- Run Verify integrity of game files.
- Try launching without mods or custom launch options.
- Confirm that the required external launcher is installed and signed in.
- Consult the game’s official support page before attempting a narrower reset.
No Cloud conflict appears
No conflict does not necessarily mean the reset failed. Steam may regard the local files as authoritative, the title may have no Cloud files, the new files may already have uploaded, or the changed files may not be included in that game’s Cloud configuration. Relaunch the game and verify the actual result; do not delete additional data solely because no prompt appeared.
A save exists on another PC or Steam Deck
Exit the game on every other device before resetting. Do not launch it elsewhere until the new state has been verified. If necessary, disable Cloud for the game on those devices too, then establish the desired state on one device and re-enable synchronization only after that state is confirmed.
Choose the right reset method
- In-game reset exists: use it first, especially for a single save slot or character.
- No Steam Cloud: back up and remove or rename the verified local save/profile data.
- Steam Cloud is restoring old progress: disable Cloud, create a new local state, then upload that state deliberately.
- Progress is online or account-linked: use the publisher’s account-management or support process.
- The problem is crashing or corrupted installation files: verify the game files instead of deleting saves.
- The goal is to remove achievements or stats: treat it as a separate, potentially permanent Steamworks operation.
Final verification checklist
Keep your backup until all of these checks pass:
- The old campaign, profile, world, or character no longer appears.
- The game shows its first-run setup or new-game screen where appropriate.
- A new save can be created and survives a complete restart.
- Re-enabling Steam Cloud does not restore the previous state.
- The desired local state is the one shown in Steam’s Cloud conflict, if a conflict appears.
- No other PC, Steam Deck, launcher, or account is uploading the old data.
- You understand that achievements, purchases, online progression, and account records may still remain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does uninstalling a Steam game delete its saves?
Often it does not. Saves may be stored in Documents, AppData, Saved Games, Steam userdata, a Proton prefix, an external launcher, or Steam Cloud. Uninstalling mainly removes the game’s installed binaries; check the game’s documented user-data locations separately.
Does deleting local saves delete Steam Cloud saves?
Not necessarily. Steam Cloud synchronizes developer-selected files, and the older Cloud copy can return after local deletion. Disable Cloud, create the desired new local state, then re-enable Cloud and choose the local/upload option if Steam shows a conflict.
How do I stop Steam Cloud from restoring an old save?
Close the game, disable Cloud for that title, quit Steam completely, back up and rename the verified save folder, launch with Cloud disabled, create a new save, and then re-enable Cloud. If another device uses the account, keep it from launching the game until the reset is verified.
Can I reset only one save slot?
Use the game’s in-game save manager whenever possible. Some games store every slot in one database or profile file, so deleting that file can erase all progress and settings rather than one slot.
Does resetting a game remove Steam achievements?
No, not normally. Steam achievements and stats are separate from local save files. Steamworks documents separate console commands for achievement and stat operations, but they are not local-save commands and may have permanent or game-specific effects.
Does Steam Cloud work on Steam Deck?
It can, when the game supports Steam Cloud and the relevant files are configured for synchronization. Native Linux games and Windows games running through Proton may use different local paths, and developers can configure platform-specific Cloud behavior.
Why is there no Steam Cloud option for my game?
The game may not support Steam Cloud through Steam, may use a separate launcher or server, or you may be viewing a different AppID such as a demo or playtest. Check the game’s official documentation, store features, and publisher support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I reset an online game by deleting Steam files?
Usually not. Online characters, ranks, inventories, battle-pass progress, and cross-platform data are often stored on publisher servers. Use the game’s account tools or official support process.
What does Upload local files mean in a Steam Cloud conflict?
It means Steam should keep the files on the computer and send them to Cloud. After creating a clean local save with Cloud disabled, this is generally the choice that replaces the old Cloud state—provided you have verified that the local files are the reset state.
The Bottom Line
To reset a Steam game safely, reset the correct layer: use the game’s own delete option when available; otherwise back up and rename the verified local save data. Disable Steam Cloud before creating the new state, then re-enable it and upload the new local files instead of downloading the old Cloud copy. Treat achievements, online progression, publisher accounts, and purchases as separate data that a local save reset may not affect.
