Search for Minecraft on the ordinary Google web-search page and, when the feature is available, a small grass-block button turns the results page into a miniature mining experience. Steve’s hand appears, search-result sections become breakable blocks, and Minecraft scenes gradually emerge underneath.
There is one important limitation: this is not the Java or Bedrock Edition, and it is not a free browser version of Minecraft. It is a short, scripted Google Search mini-game with mining, visual progression, and a block counter—but no persistent world, crafting system, multiplayer, or documented save.
The Easter egg was introduced in May 2024 for Minecraft’s 15th anniversary. Reports indicate that it was still appearing for some users as of August 10, 2026, but Google has not promised permanent or worldwide availability.
What is Google’s Minecraft Easter egg?
This is a Google Search Easter egg, not a Google Doodle. It is an interactive layer placed over a results page for the query Minecraft, built around the game’s most recognizable action: breaking blocks.

When activated, the page stops behaving like a normal static list of search results. The player can mine parts of the results interface, reveal small Minecraft environments, collect better tools within the session, and continue downward through caves and other themed scenes. The result is much more substantial than a button that plays a short animation, but far less extensive than Minecraft itself.
The feature appeared around Minecraft’s 15th anniversary. Mojang identifies May 17, 2009 as Minecraft’s birthday, referring to the release of the early game known as Cave Game. In its anniversary coverage, Mojang told readers to search for Minecraft to discover something special. Contemporary reporting from 9to5Google and GameSpot documented the interactive Search feature on May 16, 2024.
That date matters because some later pages have presented the Easter egg as a new 2025 or 2026 release. It is not. The documented launch was a 2024 anniversary promotion, although the feature has reportedly continued to appear for some users since then.

How to activate the Minecraft Search Easter egg
- Open the regular Google Search website in a web browser.
- Search for Minecraft. This exact query is the most consistently documented trigger.
- Wait for the results page to finish loading.
- Look for a small, pixelated grass-block button. Early reports placed it at or near the bottom of the results page, although Google’s changing layouts can affect its location.
- Click or tap the grass block.
- Wait for the mining interface and Steve’s hand to appear.
On a desktop computer, use a mouse or trackpad. On a phone or tablet, tap the button and then tap the interactive areas. Reports have described the feature working on both desktop and mobile, but that should not be interpreted as a guarantee that it works on every browser, Google app, device, country, or account.

Some secondary guides have reported that related searches such as Minecraft Bedrock Edition, Minecraft Dungeons, or Minecraft Steve can also trigger related behavior. Mojang’s own wording confirms the simple search for Minecraft, so use that query first rather than relying on alternate phrases.
How to mine the Google results page
Clicking the grass block is only the beginning. Once the overlay loads, move the pointer across the page. When it changes to a crosshair or otherwise indicates that an area is breakable, click that section. On a touchscreen, tap the areas that respond as mineable.

The first targets are generally sections of the Google results page itself. Search-result cards, panels, and other page modules are treated like oversized Minecraft blocks. Steve’s hand or arm swings as the selected section breaks apart, exposing the Minecraft-themed scene beneath it.
The exact route is not necessarily identical for every user. Google results pages vary by location, device, query context, and layout, and reports describe the sequence as a scripted or variable experience rather than a normal Minecraft world. Do not expect a universal route with fixed coordinates or guaranteed block-count thresholds.

What you can discover
As you break through the page and continue scrolling, reports have described several Minecraft-inspired elements, including:
- Surface areas and underground caves.
- Stone, ores, and other mineable blocks.
- Small environmental scenes hidden beneath the results.
- TNT and other recognizable Minecraft references.
- Nether-related scenery and, in some reports, later areas associated with other dimensions such as The End.
- A bedrock-like stopping point in parts of the experience.
These should be understood as scenes and references inside a mini-game, not as access to Minecraft’s actual dimensions. You are not entering a procedurally generated Nether, opening a Nether portal, or exploring a saved world.
Tool upgrades and the block counter
The mini-game includes a limited form of progression. Secondary coverage describes the player moving through increasingly capable tools, with references to wooden, stone, iron, diamond, and rarer materials such as ancient debris or Netherite-style upgrades. The important takeaway is that mining deeper can improve the tool available within the experience.
There is no authoritative public rulebook confirming one fixed upgrade order, exact click totals, or universal thresholds. A particular tool should not be promised after a particular number of blocks, especially when the page layout and sequence can vary.

A counter in the lower-left area records the number of blocks broken. It works best understood as a session score or progress indicator. No source confirms that the number is saved between visits, attached to a Google account, or carried into Minecraft.
Tips for seeing more of the Easter egg
- Do not stop after the first block. Move across the page and look for every section that changes to a mineable cursor or crosshair.
- Scroll down. The experience can extend below the initial viewport, with additional caves, blocks, and scenes appearing farther down the results page.
- Check the top again if the button disappears. Contemporary reports observed that the grass-block control could disappear after scrolling and return when the user moved back toward the top.
- Mine newly exposed areas. A section that was not interactive at first may become useful after surrounding page elements have been broken away.
- Do not expect a fixed world. This is a scripted tribute layered onto the search page, not a world with a seed, inventory, or conventional exploration rules.
How to exit
Look for the X control associated with the Easter egg and click or tap it. Reports from GameSpot, Dot Esports, and ComicBook describe a Creeper appearing and exploding as the intended exit animation before the normal results page returns.
If the control is not visible, refreshing the results page or navigating to another page should end the session as well. Those methods reset the Search page rather than playing the themed Creeper exit.
What this is—and what it is not
Headlines often shorten the experience to play Minecraft on Google. That is understandable, but technically misleading. Google is reproducing selected Minecraft actions and imagery; it is not hosting the actual game client.
| Full Minecraft | Google Search Easter egg |
|---|---|
| Persistent survival or Creative worlds | A temporary search-page session |
| Procedural exploration and world seeds | Scripted or arranged scenes beneath the results page |
| Inventory, crafting, and resource management | Limited tool-progression effects |
| Mobs, combat, and normal game systems | Visual Minecraft references, including a Creeper exit animation |
| Multiplayer | No multiplayer feature documented |
| Saved progress | No persistent save documented |
| A downloadable game client | Runs inside Google Search when available |
So the honest description is a Google Search mining mini-game or an interactive Minecraft tribute. It is a clever no-download novelty, not a replacement for Minecraft Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, Minecraft Dungeons, or any other full Minecraft release.
What to do if the grass block does not appear
The feature is real, but its availability is the largest caveat. Google regularly changes Search layouts and has retired or altered Easter eggs before. No official Google troubleshooting page or permanent availability statement for this specific feature has been located.

If you cannot find the button, work through this sequence:
- Search for exactly
Minecraft, without relying on a related query. - Confirm that you are using the ordinary Google web-results page—not Google Images, a third-party search engine, a cached page, or an alternate search mode.
- Wait for all result modules to load.
- Inspect the full page, checking the lower portion first because that is where the launch-era reports placed the button.
- Scroll back toward the top in case the control has moved or temporarily disappeared during scrolling.
- Refresh the results page.
- Try a private or incognito window.
- Try a current desktop browser.
- Temporarily disable aggressive script-blocking, privacy, or cosmetic-filter extensions.
- Try another browser or device, including a mobile browser if you started on desktop.
Desktop and mobile layouts can differ, and the Easter egg may be unavailable in a particular region, account cohort, session, or interface. If it still does not appear after these checks, the most accurate conclusion is that Google is not delivering the feature to that session right now—not that you have missed a secret activation phrase.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Easter egg still available?
The most defensible current answer is: it has continued to be reported as available for at least some users through 2026, but it is not guaranteed for everyone. Later guides, including Dot Esports, continued to describe the feature, and anecdotal user reports show that people were still discovering it. That is evidence of continued access, not an official uptime commitment.
Availability can change with Google’s Search design, browser support, region, device, extensions, and rollout decisions. A missing grass block does not by itself prove that Google has permanently removed the Easter egg, but neither should an article promise that it will work everywhere indefinitely.
Do not confuse it with Minecraft’s “Minceraft” Easter egg
There is another, completely separate Minecraft Easter egg called Minceraft. In that case, the Minecraft title screen can very rarely display the game’s name with the letters rearranged. The Minecraft Wiki commonly lists the chance as 0.01%, or 1 in 10,000, although that figure comes from community documentation rather than a current official Mojang support page.

The Minceraft title-screen mistake has nothing to do with Google Search’s grass block, Steve’s hand, or the mineable results page. One is a rare in-game logo variation; the other is a Google anniversary promotion.
See the Minecraft Wiki’s community documentation of the separate Minceraft Easter egg.
The verdict
Google’s Minecraft Easter egg works because it translates Minecraft’s most familiar action—mining—into a place that normally consists of text, links, and search panels. Breaking through the results page to reveal caves, ores, tools, and Minecraft scenery is considerably more interactive than a typical Search joke.
Just keep the scale in perspective. It is a polished, temporary mini-game from Minecraft’s 15th-anniversary celebration, not the real game in a browser. If the grass block appears, it is worth a few minutes of digging. If it does not, that may reflect Google’s current delivery or layout rather than anything wrong with your search.

Can you play the full Minecraft game through Google Search?
No. The Google feature is a small scripted mining mini-game. It does not provide Minecraft’s normal worlds, crafting, inventory, multiplayer, world seeds, or persistent saves.
Why can’t I find the Minecraft grass-block button?
The feature is not guaranteed to appear for every user, device, browser, region, or session. Search exactly for Minecraft on the ordinary Google web-results page, wait for it to load, check the full page, try a private window or another current browser, and temporarily disable extensions that block scripts or alter page elements.
Does the Google Minecraft Easter egg work on phones?
It has been reported on both desktop and mobile, but the button’s position and touch interaction can vary. Mobile availability is not guaranteed for every browser or Google app.
Is Google’s Minecraft Easter egg the same as the Minceraft Easter egg?
No. Google’s feature is a Search-page mining mini-game. Minceraft is the separate, rare title-screen Easter egg in which the Minecraft logo can appear with its letters rearranged.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Search Minecraft on Google and look for the grass block. If it appears, you can mine the results page, uncover Minecraft-themed scenes, and try limited tool progression. It is a genuine 2024 anniversary Easter egg that may still work for some users in 2026—but it is not the full Minecraft game, and Google does not guarantee that everyone will receive it.
