Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) is not a legitimate free-download game. On Windows, obtain it through the official Battle.net, Steam, or Microsoft Store/Xbox app listing, or use an active PC Game Pass entitlement if the game is currently included for your account and region. Avoid torrents, repacks, cracked executables, and unauthorized key sellers: they can be unsafe, unsupported, and may not provide a valid game entitlement.
This guide covers the current standalone Windows installation, hardware requirements, first-launch preparation, troubleshooting, and the features that matter most to new players. It refers to the 2022 game—not the separate 2009 title commonly called Modern Warfare 2.
Before downloading: make sure you have the right game
Activision’s official worldwide release date for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was October 28, 2022. The Steam package may show October 27, 2022 in its store metadata because storefront release timestamps and regional listings do not always match the publisher’s worldwide launch date.
The 2022 game follows 2019’s Modern Warfare and is separate from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009). The older game has a different store listing and dramatically different PC requirements. Search for the full title, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, before buying or installing.

Where can you legally download Modern Warfare II on Windows?
The PC Standard Edition has been offered digitally through Battle.net, Steam, and the Microsoft Store. Activision and Xbox documentation have also described access for active PC Game Pass and PC Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. Prices, subscription catalogs, regional availability, and included editions can change, so check the current listing and confirm that the account you are using has the required entitlement before starting the download.
- Battle.net: buy or redeem the PC game through the official Battle.net ecosystem.
- Steam: install it from your Steam Library. The Steam listing requires a third-party Activision account.
- Microsoft Store or Xbox app: install it using the Microsoft account that owns the game or has the applicable subscription entitlement.
- PC Game Pass: use this only while the current catalog and your account’s entitlement show access. It is a subscription route, not a permanent free copy.
Important standalone-title change
Modern Warfare II was previously distributed as part of the broader Call of Duty experience. Activision announced that older Modern Warfare II files inside that experience would be automatically removed on August 7, 2025, as the game moved to a standalone installation across platforms.
That means a previous Call of Duty installation may no longer contain everything needed. If you already own the game and cannot find its campaign or multiplayer files, search your platform store for the current standalone Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II listing, add or reinstall it, and then launch it from your platform library. Activision also indicates that the standalone game may be cross-launched from the main Call of Duty installation after it has been downloaded.
How to download and install it on Windows
Use the instructions for the storefront where you purchased the game or receive your subscription entitlement. Do not download a separate executable from a file-sharing site; the official launcher manages the game files, account checks, and updates.

Battle.net
- Install or open the official Battle.net application.
- Sign in to the account that owns Modern Warfare II.
- Open All Games.
- Find and select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. If it does not appear, search for the standalone listing rather than assuming it is included in an older Call of Duty installation.
- Select Install.
- Choose the installation location if Battle.net asks you to do so.
- Wait for the download and any post-install updates to finish before launching.
Steam
- Open Steam and sign in.
- Open Library.
- Select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
- Choose Install and select a destination drive if prompted.
- Allow Steam to download all associated files and complete its updates.
- When prompted, sign in to or link the required Activision account.
If you purchased the game on another platform, it will not automatically become a Steam entitlement. Install it through the storefront tied to your purchase or subscription.
Microsoft Store or Xbox app
- Open the Microsoft Store or Xbox app on Windows.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the game or holds the eligible Game Pass subscription.
- Open Library or My Library.
- Find Modern Warfare II and select the download icon beside it.
- Choose the installation drive and let the app finish downloading and updating the game.
If the download icon is missing, first verify the account, subscription status, region, and current catalog listing. A subscription can provide access only while the entitlement is active and the game remains available under the applicable terms.
Windows system requirements
Activision’s requirements are for desktop PCs and call for broadband internet, a DirectX-compatible sound card, and a DirectX 12-compatible system. A laptop GPU with a name similar to a desktop GPU may have different power limits and performance, so laptop owners should check the exact processor and graphics hardware rather than relying only on the model family.

Activision describes this tier as suitable for 60 frames per second in most situations with high settings. That is a target description rather than a guarantee for every resolution, map, graphics preset, or future update.

These are performance targets, not independent benchmark results. Actual frame rates vary with resolution, graphics settings, drivers, background software, map complexity, and updates.
How much storage is needed?
The Steam listing reports 125 GB of available storage. Activision separately lists an optional Hi-Rez Assets Cache of up to 32 GB for the minimum and recommended targets, or up to 64 GB for the Ultra 4K target.
Do not plan to fill a drive to exactly 125 GB. Launcher updates, temporary download files, shader data, and future patches can require additional working space. If your system drive is nearly full, an internal gaming SSD can be a practical upgrade, but an SSD is not presented here as an additional minimum requirement for the game. Check the current store listing before installation because the occupied space can change after updates.

Supported Windows versions
Modern Warfare II supports current installations of Windows 10 and Windows 11 as specified by Activision. Windows 7 and Windows 8 are unsupported. Keep Windows 10 or Windows 11 updated; older Windows 10 builds can create stability problems or fall outside current support expectations.
Before launching, update the graphics driver through the supported channel for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel hardware. Do not copy old driver version numbers from historical requirement pages and treat them as universal recommendations today. Use the current driver offered by the hardware manufacturer and restart Windows afterward.
Let shader preloading finish
Shader preloading is one of the most important first-boot steps. When the game is compiling or preloading shaders, leave it on the main menu until the process completes. Starting a campaign, joining a match, or leaving the menu can interrupt the process and contribute to stuttering or other performance problems.
After a major graphics-driver update or game update, the game may need to rebuild shaders. Allow that process to finish again before judging performance.

Campaign
The Campaign is a globe-spanning single-player story focused on the return of Task Force 141. It follows the events of 2019’s Modern Warfare and brings back familiar Operators in a conflict that moves across international locations.

Campaign is also a useful low-pressure way to learn the game’s basic aiming, movement, equipment, and vehicle interactions before entering competitive Multiplayer.
6v6 Multiplayer and Battle Maps
Multiplayer includes traditional 6v6 matches as well as larger Battle Maps with vehicles. The movement system is more involved than simply running and shooting: players can swim, dive, hang from some ledges, and use vehicles or alternate routes to change an engagement.
The exact live playlists and matchmaking options can change, so think of these as the game’s mode families rather than a promise that every individual playlist will be available on every date.

Special Ops is the cooperative mode family, built around tactical teamwork and mission-based play. Activision also described Raids as a cooperative, puzzle-solving-oriented part of the post-launch plan. Because access structures and live playlists can change, check the current in-game menus rather than assuming that a particular Raid or Special Ops playlist is permanently active.
Gunsmith and Weapons Platforms
The revised Gunsmith is built around Weapons Platforms and branching progression. A platform can evolve beyond one weapon class by changing receivers, while attachments may unlock across a platform—or more broadly, depending on the attachment.
For new players, the practical lesson is simple: inspect the platform progression screen before abandoning a weapon because an attachment is missing. Progression is not always a separate unlock path for every individual gun. Changing receivers can open a different weapon configuration while preserving the broader platform’s progression relationship.
Swimming, diving, and ledge hanging
Water is a tactical part of the level design rather than mere decoration. Players can swim, dive, use underwater paths for concealment or repositioning, and fight underwater with sidearms and certain equipment. Water density changes projectile behavior, so underwater aiming and weapon choice do not work exactly like land combat.
Players can slide or dive depending on the movement state immediately before the action. Ledge hanging also allows a player to peek from some mantles before committing to a climb, creating another way to gather information or surprise an opponent.

Vehicles and equipment
Vehicles are more interactive and destructible than simple transport. Depending on the map and mode, players can lean out of windows, mantle onto vehicle roofs, damage vehicle components, and use ground, air, or water vehicles.
Several pieces of equipment reward deliberate positioning:
- Drill Charge: bores through a surface before releasing an explosive payload on the other side.
- Shock Stick: can damage equipment and disrupt vehicles.
- DDoS field upgrade: can reveal and temporarily disable nearby equipment or vehicles.
Practical tips for new Windows players
- Finish shader preloading before playing. This is the best first-launch precaution for avoiding performance problems caused by interrupted shader preparation.
- Use the recommended tier as your realistic 60-FPS reference. The minimum tier is not a high-settings or fixed-frame-rate guarantee.
- Learn movement in Campaign or cooperative modes. Practice swimming, diving, ledge hanging, and vehicle interaction before trying to use them under Multiplayer pressure.
- Read Weapons Platform progression carefully. Receivers and attachments are connected through platform progression, so inspect the unlock path instead of treating every gun as an isolated system.
- Use water tactically. An underwater route can conceal a reposition, but underwater weapons and projectile behavior are limited compared with ordinary land combat.
- Build a loadout around a role. Custom Multiplayer loadouts include a primary weapon, secondary weapon, lethal equipment, tactical equipment, and a perk package. Select these pieces as a coherent role rather than choosing each item independently.
- Change one setting or variable at a time. Repair files, complete shader preloading, update supported drivers, and then adjust graphics settings methodically so you can identify what actually changes performance.
Troubleshooting download and installation problems
The game does not appear in the launcher
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that purchased the game or holds the active subscription entitlement.
- Search for the standalone Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II listing.
- Do not assume that an older Call of Duty installation still contains the required files after the standalone-title change.
- Check the current store listing, region, and subscription catalog if you are using Game Pass.
- Update the launcher and confirm that the destination drive has sufficient free space.
The download fails, stalls, or reports corrupt files
- Close and reopen the launcher, then check for pending launcher updates.
- Confirm that the drive has room for the game, temporary files, shader data, and updates.

Activision’s known-issues guidance has listed PC performance loss as an issue for which affected users should contact support and have a DxDiag file ready. That does not mean every PC player will experience the problem, and it is not a universal fix for all performance complaints.
The game crashes or freezes
- Run Battle.net’s Scan and Repair or Steam’s file-integrity verification.
- Complete shader preloading again if the crash followed a driver or game update.
- Close background utilities and overlays that may conflict with the game.
- Activision’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out possible conflicts involving NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, Razer Cortex, and certain other background applications. This does not mean those applications are inherently unsafe; it means they are worth temporarily closing while isolating a conflict.
- Update Razer Synapse where relevant.
- If ASLR was previously disabled on the PC, re-enable it as recommended by Activision’s troubleshooting guidance.
- If ordinary steps fail, test with a clean boot to identify a startup-program conflict.
Keep a record of what changed between tests. If you contact support, prepare the requested system information, including a DxDiag file when the support article asks for it.
