The reliable way to remap a controller is to use the game’s own control settings first, then the platform’s built-in controller or accessibility settings, then Steam Input or another launcher-level tool. Use a third-party mapper only when those options cannot produce the input you need.
There is no single remapping method that works identically on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Apple devices, Android, and cloud-gaming services. The correct steps depend on the controller, host device, connection type, and whether you want the change to affect one game, every game, or the system interface as well.
Before you remap anything
First decide where the change should apply:
| Remapping level | What it changes | Best use | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game-level | Controls inside one game | Changing Jump, Attack, Crouch, or similar actions without affecting other software | You must repeat the setup for other games |
| Platform or operating-system level | Compatible games and sometimes menus | Console-wide accessibility changes or a consistent layout across several titles | Some games ignore system mappings or interpret them differently |
| Launcher-level | Games launched through a client such as Steam | Per-game layouts, keyboard output, mouse output, and virtual-controller support | Overlays, launchers, administrator privileges, and anti-cheat systems can interfere |
| Controller profile | Depending on the hardware, the controller’s stored or host-specific profile | Switching between layouts or using paddles and extra inputs | Profiles may not travel with the controller, and features vary by model |
- Identify the controller and host. Note whether it is an Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, generic USB, or Bluetooth controller, and whether it is connected to a console, Windows PC, Mac, phone, tablet, handheld, or streaming client.
- Record the original layout. Take a screenshot or write down the defaults. On hardware with profiles, create a new profile instead of overwriting the one you normally use.
- Change one input at a time. Test the result in a menu, tutorial, practice range, or other low-risk area before changing several controls.
- Keep only one remapping layer active while troubleshooting. Steam Input, DS4Windows, reWASD, the game’s own mapper, and a console-level profile can all transform the same input.
The best order for remapping
Use this order unless you have a specific reason not to:
- Open the game’s controller settings. This usually produces the correct in-game prompts and changes only that title.
- Try the host platform’s built-in controller or accessibility settings. This is the safest route on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Apple, and Android devices.
- On Steam or SteamOS, try Steam Input. It is particularly useful when the game does not offer enough controls or when you need keyboard or mouse output.
- Use one third-party mapper only if necessary. This is mainly relevant to Windows users who need virtual-controller, keyboard, mouse, or advanced profile features.
This sequence minimizes double-mapping, virtual-controller conflicts, unexpected ABXY or keyboard prompts, and compatibility problems with anti-cheat software.

Windows PC: remap through Steam Input
Steam Input is the most flexible first option for a Steam game on Windows. It can assign a controller button to another gamepad input, a keyboard key, a mouse action, or another supported command.
For a Steam game
- Open Steam and select the game in your library.
- Open the game’s controller configuration or Controller Layout. Depending on the Steam interface, this is available from the game’s controller interface, the game page, or Big Picture Mode.
- Select the physical button, trigger, stick, or other control you want to change.
- Assign the replacement gamepad input, keyboard key, mouse action, or supported command.
- Save the layout as a personal or per-game configuration.
- Launch the game through Steam and test the changed input before editing anything else.
For example, you could assign the right bumper to the keyboard key F, or make a back button send the same input as a face button. The game will receive the output Steam sends, not necessarily the physical identity of the button.
For a non-Steam game
- In Steam, choose Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
- Select the game executable or launcher.
- Launch it through Steam rather than starting the executable directly.
- Open the controller layout and apply the desired mapping.
This can work well, but it is not guaranteed. Steam notes that non-Steam games, games launched through separate administrator-level launchers, titles without Steam Overlay support, and games whose anti-cheat system blocks emulated input may not work correctly with Steam Controller configurations.
Why the game may show keyboard prompts
If you map a controller button to a keyboard key, the game is receiving keyboard input. It may therefore display keyboard prompts rather than controller prompts. That is normal and does not necessarily mean the layout failed.
For native controller prompts, assign one gamepad action to another gamepad action whenever possible. If the game only supports keyboard bindings for the function you need, keyboard prompts are an expected trade-off.
Windows PC: Xbox controllers and Xbox Accessories
Microsoft supports controller configuration through the Xbox Accessories app on compatible Xbox controllers, Xbox consoles, and Windows 10 or Windows 11 systems. The exact options depend on the controller model.
Basic setup
- Connect and power on the controller.
- Open Xbox Accessories.
- Select the controller.
- Choose Configure.
- Create a new profile or edit an existing one.
- Open Mapping, select the physical control, and choose its replacement function.
- Save the profile and switch to it when needed.
An Xbox Wireless Controller is a straightforward choice for Xbox and Windows users who want official, broadly supported controller configuration. Do not assume that every mapping option or profile feature is available on every Xbox controller or on every host device.
Standard Xbox controllers versus Elite and Adaptive hardware
Standard Xbox controller remapping is generally centered on swapping button functions. The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 provides more extensive configuration, profiles, and extra controls such as paddles. Microsoft also documents keyboard-key mapping for the Elite Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller in compatible Xbox Accessories configurations.
Keyboard mapping is not the same as a native gamepad remap. On an Xbox console, it helps only in games that accept the relevant keyboard input. It does not turn every Xbox game into a keyboard-compatible title.
Windows PC: PlayStation controllers
Start by checking whether the game and Steam recognize a DualSense or DualShock controller directly. Direct support is preferable because it avoids an additional virtual-controller layer.
Using DS4Windows
DS4Windows is an open-source Windows mapper and virtual emulator for supported PlayStation controllers. It can read a DualShock or DualSense controller, apply a profile, and present virtual output to games that work better with an Xbox-style or other supported controller interface.
The current project documentation identifies Windows 10 and Windows 11 support and lists the runtime and driver components it needs. Install it only from an authentic project source, and follow its current setup instructions rather than copying driver files from an unofficial download site.

Using reWASD
reWASD is a Windows-focused, paid remapping option for users who need controller-to-controller mappings, keyboard and mouse output, virtual controllers, or more advanced profiles. It can hide the physical controller and expose an emulated controller instead, which may be exactly what a game requires—but it also creates another possible conflict.
Use either DS4Windows or reWASD for a particular controller workflow, not both at the same time. Also disable overlapping Steam PlayStation or Xbox controller configuration support when DS4Windows is managing the device. Multiple layers can cause duplicate buttons, missing inputs, drifting virtual sticks, or a game seeing two controllers.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
On an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, use the console’s Xbox Accessories app:
- Open Xbox Accessories.
- Select the connected controller.
- Choose Configure.
- Create or select a profile.
- Open the mapping controls, change the desired assignments, and save.
For a standard controller, expect a more limited swap-oriented arrangement. Elite and Adaptive controllers provide more extensive assignments and profile features. A controller profile configured on Xbox may not behave identically when the controller is connected to a Windows PC, phone, or another console.

PlayStation 5
For a standard DualSense, check the individual game first. Many PS5 games provide their own button, stick, trigger, or accessibility controls, and a game-level change is less likely to affect system navigation.
PlayStation Access controller profiles
For the PlayStation Access controller, create a profile from:

Sony documents custom assignments, controller orientation, stick sensitivity, and dead-zone settings for Access controller profiles. Up to 30 custom profiles can be saved on the console. Use a separate profile for each game or physical setup when that makes the controls easier to remember.
Be careful not to remove every input needed to operate the PS5 system interface. Keep a usable navigation profile available, or retain the controls required to return to settings and switch profiles.
Assist controller is different from remapping
PlayStation’s assist-controller feature combines two controllers so that they operate as one player’s controller. It is useful when another person is helping with inputs or when one player needs two physical control devices. It does not change one physical button into a different action, so it should not be confused with ordinary remapping.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo provides native button-mapping controls for compatible Joy-Con and Pro controllers. Because Switch and Switch 2 do not use identical menus or hardware, do not assume that a path from one generation is present on the other.

- Look for the controller button-mapping option.
- Select the controller and change the assignments.
- Save the configuration and test it in a game or menu.
On Switch 2, compatible Joy-Con 2 and Switch 2 Pro hardware can also expose separate GL/GR back-button settings. The available controls depend on the controller. If you do not see GL/GR settings, the connected hardware may not support them.
Nintendo’s remap is a console-side configuration. It does not follow the controller to Windows, Android, another console, or a cloud-gaming client. A Nintendo Switch Pro Controller may connect to other platforms, but the remapping method and supported functions come from the platform receiving it.
iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro
Apple’s controller customization supports compatible controllers, but button and feature support can vary by controller model and app. A control shown in system settings may not be honored by every game.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
iPhone and iPad
After connecting the controller:
- Open Settings > General > Game Controller.
- Select the connected controller.
- Choose the default controls or add a game-specific control profile.
- Save the profile and launch the game to test it.
Apple documents controller customization on iOS 16 or later and iPadOS 16 or later, subject to controller and app support. A game-specific profile is preferable when only one title needs a different layout.
Mac
Open System Settings > Game Controllers, select the controller, and review the available customization options. macOS Ventura 13 or later is covered by Apple’s controller customization documentation, although the controls exposed depend on the controller and app.
Apple TV
On Apple TV, open Settings > General > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth, select the controller, and choose Customization. If a game ignores the customized layout, check that game’s own controller settings; system-level support is not universal.
Apple Vision Pro and Buddy Controller
Compatible-controller support on Apple Vision Pro and other Apple platforms can vary by operating-system release, controller, and app. Look for the Game Controller settings available on the device instead of assuming that the iPhone or Mac menu is identical.
Apple’s Buddy Controller feature combines two controllers so they operate as one. Like PlayStation’s assist-controller feature, it is designed for shared assistance rather than replacing the action assigned to a single physical button.
Android phones and tablets
Connect the controller by USB or Bluetooth, then use Android’s built-in game-controller settings if your device exposes them. Android menu names vary by version and manufacturer.
Wired controller
- Open Settings > System > Game controllers.
- Review Controller Settings.
- Use the available options to swap supported button assignments or swap the left and right joysticks.
Bluetooth controller
- Open Settings > Connected devices.
- Select the paired controller.
- Open the available Game Controller settings.
- Change the supported button or joystick assignments.
Google documents swapping two buttons and swapping the left and right joysticks on supported Android devices. If the menu is missing, look in the game’s own controls next. An Android system remap may be ignored or overridden by an app that handles controller input directly.
Steam Deck and Linux
SteamOS
Steam Input is usually the best first option on SteamOS because it is integrated into the Steam client and supports layouts on a per-game basis. Open the game’s controller layout, change the desired control, save the layout, and test it in the game.
This per-game scope is useful on a Steam Deck: one title can use a back-button or keyboard mapping without unexpectedly changing another title’s controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If Windows is installed on a Steam Deck, Windows remapping tools may be available. reWASD documents Steam Deck support in Windows, but behavior depends on the controller mode, drivers, and the particular Windows installation. Treat it as a Windows configuration problem rather than assuming the SteamOS workflow still applies.
Non-Steam Linux games
There is no single universal Linux remapping menu that works across every distribution, desktop environment, launcher, and game. Check the game’s controls, then the launcher and desktop’s controller tools. Only after those options fail should you add an external mapper, and you should confirm that it supports your distribution and the game’s input system.

Cloud gaming and remote play
Streaming adds several separate input layers. The controller may be recognized by the phone or PC, the browser or streaming client, the remote-play service, and finally the game. A successful Bluetooth connection does not guarantee that the remote game will receive the expected layout.
Remap as close as possible to the component that receives the input:
Recommended Free Tools
- If the game has its own control editor, use it first.
- If the streaming app has controller settings, check whether it expects Xbox/XInput, PlayStation, or generic HID input.
- If the local device remaps the controller, test the result inside the streaming session rather than only in the phone or PC’s settings.
A service may accept the controller while still showing the wrong button prompts or ignoring features such as paddles, motion controls, touch surfaces, or back buttons.

The controller is not detected
Remapping software cannot reliably configure a controller that the operating system or console does not see.
- Try another USB port and, if possible, a known-good USB data cable. A charge-only cable may power the controller without carrying input data.
- Check Bluetooth pairing, battery level, firmware, and the controller’s connection mode.
- Confirm that Windows, the console, or the mobile device recognizes the controller before opening a mapper.
- For older or unusual devices, a compatible wireless adapter or wired connection may be more dependable than Bluetooth.
- Only after basic detection works should you troubleshoot mapping software or drivers.
A Bluetooth adapter can help a Windows desktop that lacks suitable Bluetooth, but it must be compatible with the controller and the computer’s driver environment. Installing a driver-updater utility is not a substitute for checking the cable, pairing, firmware, adapter, and device recognition.
Two buttons respond, or inputs appear twice
This is usually double mapping. Close the game and disable all but one of Steam Input, DS4Windows, reWASD, the game’s mapper, and any controller profile that is transforming the same input. Then restart the game and test a single mapping.
If DS4Windows is active, disable overlapping PlayStation and Xbox controller configuration support in Steam. If reWASD is exposing a virtual controller, do not leave another virtual-controller emulator active at the same time.
The game shows the wrong prompts
- Keyboard prompts: a controller button is sending a keyboard key.
- ABXY prompts: a PlayStation controller may be exposed as an Xbox-style virtual controller.
- Incorrect button labels: the game may be using a generic layout or may not recognize the controller’s native identity.
Prompts do not always indicate failure. If you need native prompts, prefer the game’s own gamepad remapper or a gamepad-to-gamepad assignment instead of keyboard output.
The mapping has no effect
Confirm that you launched the game through the layer containing the profile. A Steam layout will not necessarily apply if the game is started directly from its executable. On a console or mobile device, the game may ignore system-level remapping and read the controller directly.
Also check whether the game uses a separate launcher, runs as administrator, lacks overlay support, or has anti-cheat software that blocks emulated input. Do not attempt to bypass anti-cheat protections. Use the game’s native controls or an officially supported platform feature when third-party emulation is blocked.
The game or launcher runs as administrator
A mapper or overlay running with ordinary permissions may not be able to send input to a game or launcher running with elevated permissions. Rather than changing security settings blindly, first try the game’s native remapping or the platform’s supported controller configuration. If you use a third-party tool, follow its current compatibility guidance.

You locked yourself out of a menu
Global and console-level changes can affect system navigation, not just games. Keep a default profile, a second controller, a keyboard, or another way to reach the settings screen. This is especially important when configuring an Access controller or removing face-button inputs needed to operate the PS5.
The change works in one game but not another
That is usually a scope or compatibility difference. A game profile is not global, and some games ignore platform mappings. Check the game’s own control options, confirm which profile is active, and test with every other mapper disabled.
Choosing hardware instead of adding more software
Software is convenient, but hardware can be the cleaner solution when you frequently need extra inputs, several saved layouts, or a setup that should work without a PC mapper.
- Profiles: useful when different games need different layouts. Check whether profiles are stored on the controller or only in the console or app.
- Paddles and back buttons: useful for moving a frequently used action away from a hard-to-reach face button, but the host must recognize the assigned output.
- Adaptive ports and configurable inputs: useful when reach, fatigue, grip, or single-input limitations make the standard layout unsuitable.
- Connection options: wired USB can be more predictable than Bluetooth for troubleshooting, while wireless convenience depends on the host and adapter.
An adaptive gaming controller or other programmable controller can be a better long-term accessibility choice than stacking several software remappers. No single controller fits every user, body position, game, or platform, so check the available ports, mounting options, profile behavior, and host compatibility before buying.
A practical decision tree
- Only one game needs a change? Use that game’s controller settings.
- Playing through Steam or SteamOS? Try Steam Input and create a per-game layout.
- Using an Xbox controller on Xbox or Windows? Try Xbox Accessories.
- Using an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or Android device? Use the built-in Game Controller settings when available, then check the game.
- Using Nintendo hardware? Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories and use the compatible button-mapping controls.
- Using a PlayStation Access controller? Create an Access profile and preserve a profile that can still navigate the PS5.
- Using a PlayStation controller on Windows or needing keyboard/mouse output? Consider DS4Windows or reWASD, but use only one virtual-controller layer.
- Is the goal accessibility rather than a one-off shortcut? Consider a controller with paddles, onboard profiles, adaptive ports, or configurable inputs.
Remapping checklist
- Know whether the change is game-specific, platform-wide, or stored in controller hardware.
- Save the original layout before changing it.
- Make one change and test it before making another.
- Verify that the host recognizes the controller before installing remapping software.
- Use only one transformation layer at a time.
- Expect keyboard prompts when sending keyboard output.
- Expect ABXY prompts when a PlayStation controller is exposed as an Xbox-style virtual controller.
- Keep a recovery profile for system navigation.
- Check anti-cheat, overlay, administrator, launcher, and cloud-streaming compatibility.
- Do not assume a Nintendo, Xbox, or Apple remap follows the controller to another platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the safest way to remap a controller?
Use the game’s own controller settings first. If the game lacks the required option, use the platform’s built-in controller or accessibility settings. On Steam or SteamOS, try Steam Input before installing a third-party mapper.
Can I remap a controller button to a keyboard key?
Yes, on supported Windows software and some Xbox Accessories configurations, particularly with the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller. The game will receive keyboard input, so keyboard prompts may replace controller prompts, and the game must accept that keyboard command.
Why does my controller work but the remap does not?
The game may be ignoring system-level mappings, the profile may be applied at the wrong scope, or another remapper may be overriding it. Close the game, disable overlapping layers, verify which profile is active, and test the game’s native controls.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does a console remap stay with my controller when I use it on another device?
Usually not. Nintendo, Apple, Xbox, and PlayStation remapping features are generally tied to the host platform, app, or profile system. Some controllers can store profiles in hardware, but the available behavior depends on the model and connection mode.
The Bottom Line
Remap at the lowest level that solves the problem: the game for one-title changes, the platform for system-wide accessibility, Steam Input for Steam and SteamOS flexibility, and a single third-party Windows mapper only when native options are insufficient.
When something breaks, reset the layers rather than adding another one. Confirm detection, disable overlapping remappers, restore a known-good profile, and test one change at a time. That approach is more reliable than assuming one universal controller-mapping tool works everywhere.
