Fix Oblivion Remastered low FPS or lag on PC
If The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is running poorly, troubleshoot it in this order: confirm that your PC meets the requirements, move the game to an SSD, update the graphics driver, select the correct GPU and power mode, disable overlays and unnecessary background applications, lower resolution and the most demanding graphics settings, test DLSS/FSR/XeSS, verify the game files, and temporarily remove mods.
These symptoms are related but not identical. Low average FPS usually means the CPU or GPU cannot render the scene quickly enough. Sudden drops may point to a demanding setting, thermal or power limits, background software, or a driver problem. Short freezes while moving through the world are traversal hitches or poor frame pacing; lowering every setting may reduce them but will not necessarily eliminate them. Bethesda’s own guidance makes clear that performance depends on hardware, device performance, graphics settings, and mods, so no single tweak guarantees a particular frame rate.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Compare your complete PC with the official minimum and recommended requirements.
- Confirm that the game is installed on an SSD rather than an HDD.
- Update your AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel graphics driver from the manufacturer’s official support site.
- Close browsers, chat apps, recording software, launchers, and other unnecessary programs.
- Disable Steam Overlay; if you use the Xbox App, also test with Xbox Game Bar disabled.
- On a laptop, select the discrete/high-performance GPU, choose a high-performance power profile, and connect the charger.
- Lower resolution or resolution scale, then reduce shadow quality and global illumination.
- Enable DLSS, FSR, or XeSS if available, and use a more performance-focused mode only if image quality remains acceptable.
- Verify or repair the game files through Steam or the Xbox App.
- Disable mods and retest the unmodified game.
- Reset altered video settings to auto-detected values and use Safe Mode where available.

These specifications are a baseline, not a guarantee of a fixed FPS target. Compare the processor, graphics card, RAM, operating system, and storage together. A PC can meet one part of the specification while still being limited by another component, especially in a large open-world game.
If the system is below the minimum CPU or GPU requirement, lowering settings may help, but it cannot turn underpowered hardware into recommended hardware. Consider a graphics card upgrade only after comparing your current GPU with both requirement tiers and checking VRAM, power-supply capacity, case clearance, price, and regional availability. A specific model should not be selected from the requirements alone.
1. Install the game on an SSD
An SSD is a published requirement for Oblivion Remastered, not merely an optional loading-time improvement. Bethesda’s performance guidance specifically tells players to install the game on an SSD rather than a hard disk drive. If the game is on an HDD, moving it to an SSD is one of the most directly supported fixes to try.
Players who need additional space can look for a 1TB NVMe SSD. Choose a drive that is compatible with your motherboard or laptop and leave enough free space for Windows, updates, and other games. An SSD can improve storage access and reduce problems associated with streaming game data, but it will not compensate for an inadequate CPU or GPU and is not a universal FPS fix.

2. Update the graphics driver and select the right GPU
Bethesda recommends current graphics drivers. Its performance guidance identifies AMD Adrenalin Edition 25.4.1 and NVIDIA driver 576.40 as relevant driver versions for the guidance available at that time. Driver numbers change, so download the newest compatible release from AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel’s official support channel rather than using a generic driver-updater utility.
Make sure the game is using the discrete GPU
This is particularly important on laptops. Windows or the laptop manufacturer’s graphics software may assign the game to integrated graphics instead of the discrete GPU. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the game if it is not listed, choose Options, select High performance, and save the change. The exact label can vary by Windows version or manufacturer.
Also select the laptop maker’s high-performance power mode where available and play while connected to AC power. Battery-saving behavior can reduce available performance or select a less capable graphics path. If the game still appears to use the integrated GPU, check the manufacturer’s control panel and confirm that the monitor, game executable, and power profile are configured for the discrete GPU.

3. Eliminate overlays and background software
Before comparing performance, close unnecessary browsers, chat applications, recording tools, launchers, download clients, and other programs. Background applications can consume memory, CPU time, GPU resources, or disk bandwidth.
For a controlled test:
- Exit the game completely.
- Close unnecessary applications.
- Disable Steam Overlay and relaunch the game.
- If you play through the Xbox App, also test with Xbox Game Bar disabled.
- Reproduce the same problem area or activity and compare the result.
Change one category at a time where possible. Note whether the problem is low average FPS, brief drops, or hitching during movement. Restart the game after changing graphics settings; Bethesda specifically recommends exiting and restarting after those changes.
4. Lower the settings that usually matter most
Do not start by turning every option to its lowest value. Begin with the game’s auto-detected settings, then change the largest likely bottlenecks in a controlled sequence.
Lower resolution or resolution scale first
Lowering the display resolution reduces the number of pixels the GPU renders. Lowering resolution scale keeps the monitor’s output resolution but renders the scene internally at a lower resolution before displaying it. Resolution scale can preserve a sharper-looking interface than lowering the entire display resolution, although aggressive reductions can make the world look soft.
Reduce shadows and global illumination
Bethesda identifies shadow quality and global illumination as settings that can have a significant effect on FPS. Shadows increase graphics-processing and video-memory demand, while global illumination adds lighting calculations. Reduce these before sacrificing every texture or visual effect.

Then adjust settings according to the symptom
- Outdoor drops: reduce view distance and foliage, then test again in the same outdoor location.
- High GPU load: lower resolution scale, global illumination, reflections, effects, post-processing, or Lumen software ray-tracing quality.
- Video-memory pressure or texture pop-in: reduce texture quality. This may help when the graphics card has limited VRAM, but the gain depends on the hardware.
- Ray-tracing load: lower Lumen software RT quality or disable hardware ray tracing if it is enabled and your GPU is struggling.
A practical order is:
- Start with auto-detected settings.
- Lower resolution scale one step.
- Lower shadows and global illumination.
- Reduce view distance and foliage if outdoor scenes are the main problem.
- Reduce texture quality if VRAM usage is high.
- Lower Lumen software ray-tracing quality or disable hardware ray tracing if necessary.
- Restart the game and test the same scene again.
This is a diagnostic order based on Bethesda’s documented settings and their stated performance impact; it is not a promise that every GPU will respond identically.

5. Test DLSS, FSR, or XeSS carefully
Oblivion Remastered provides DLSS, FSR, and XeSS options when they are supported by the platform and graphics hardware. These technologies render the scene at a lower internal resolution and upscale it, which can improve performance without lowering the monitor’s output resolution.
Start with a quality-oriented mode. Move toward a performance-oriented mode only as far as the image remains acceptable. Check foliage, thin objects, distant detail, and movement for shimmering or softness rather than judging only the menu image.
Frame generation is also available on supported configurations. It can increase the displayed or reported frame rate, but it does not make the underlying game render each frame faster. It should therefore not be treated as equivalent to better input latency or better frame pacing. If the game feels sluggish or uneven, improve the base render performance and frame pacing first instead of relying on frame generation alone.

Bethesda said a Microsoft PC hotfix released on April 28, 2025 addressed an issue affecting upscaling and anti-aliasing options for some players. Update the game and Windows through the normal supported channels, then reselect the graphics options in-game if necessary. If the choices remain unavailable, confirm that the game is using the intended GPU and that the graphics driver is current.
6. Verify files and isolate mods
Modified installations are another possible source of low FPS, hitching, instability, or crashes. Temporarily disable or remove mods and test the unmodified game. Then verify or repair the installation through your launcher:
- Steam: open the game’s Library entry, open Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Xbox App: open the game’s options, choose Manage, open the Files section, and use the available Verify and Repair control. Labels can vary with the Xbox App version.
After verification, launch the game without mods. If performance improves, restore modifications one at a time and retest after each addition. That process identifies the offending mod or combination more reliably than restoring the entire mod list at once.

If low performance occurs together with crashes, the same baseline checks apply: lower graphics quality, close background applications, confirm the correct GPU and driver, repair the files, and remove mods. Reinstalling should come after those steps rather than before them.

Bethesda’s Update 1.2, released July 16, 2025, included several documented performance improvements. It fixed frame-rate drops in Deepscorn Hollow, Black Rock Caverns, between Skingrad and Skingrad Castle, and south of Bravil Castle courtyard. The update also reduced the frequency of open-world hitches, improved frame times in many locations, and optimized character attachments, water rendering, lighting and shadows, waterfall effects, weather, and character animation.
Those notes matter if you remember launch-day performance, but they do not mean every PC will now run smoothly. The fixes address specific problems; hardware capability, drivers, settings, storage, overlays, and mods can still determine the experience on an individual system.
Last-resort official diagnostics
If the standard fixes do not help, return the video settings to their auto-detected values rather than stacking more changes on top of an unknown configuration. Steam users can also try launching the game in Safe Mode where that option is available.

- Run the launcher or game with the required administrator permissions where appropriate.
- Check whether antivirus software is interfering, and use an exclusion only if you understand the security trade-off and trust the game files.
- Confirm that the required DirectX runtime files are present.
- Test the game under a new Windows user profile. If performance changes there, a user-specific configuration or background program may be interfering.
Avoid treating engine-configuration edits, unofficial performance mods, or replacement system files as the default fix. They may become incompatible after updates and are not part of Bethesda’s official baseline troubleshooting path. If you use them anyway, keep a backup of your saves and original files and be prepared to undo the change.

Disable all mods, verify or repair the game files, and launch the unmodified game. If performance improves, add mods back one at a time so you can identify the problematic modification.
