Best Gaming TVs 2024: TVs for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X

A feature-focused 2024 gaming TV guide for PS5 and Xbox Series X, comparing the LG C4, Samsung S90D and Sony A95L and explaining 4K/120Hz, HDMI 2.1, VRR, ALLM and cable requirements.

For a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, the best gaming TV is the one that accepts the console’s 4K/120Hz signal through the correct HDMI input—not simply the one with the highest advertised panel refresh rate. Prioritize HDMI 2.1 features, VRR, ALLM and a certified cable.

The LG C4 is the best all-around feature-focused pick, the Samsung S90D is compelling when several HDMI inputs need high-refresh-rate support, and the Sony A95L is a premium PS5-oriented option. These recommendations compare documented specifications, not independently measured input lag or picture quality.

Quick picks

TV Best for Advertised gaming features Important caveat
LG C4 OLED Most players who want a broad feature set 144Hz gaming support, NVIDIA G-Sync, AMD FreeSync Premium and a 0.1ms response-time specification These are LG-advertised specifications, not independent test results.
Samsung S90D OLED Several high-refresh-rate devices The reviewed size-specific page lists 4K/144Hz input on HDMI inputs 1, 2, 3 and 4 Check the exact screen size and regional model suffix before buying.
Sony A95L OLED A premium, PS5-oriented setup Two HDMI inputs with full HDMI 2.1 features, including 4K/120, VRR and ALLM Only two inputs are identified as full HDMI 2.1 on the cited product page, and the A95L is a 2023 model that may have variable availability in 2024.

For a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, start by checking whether the TV accepts a 4K/120Hz signal through the correct HDMI input. A 120Hz panel alone is not enough. The TV should also offer HDMI 2.1 features, variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatic low-latency mode (ALLM).

On that basis, the LG C4 is the strongest all-around feature-focused choice, the Samsung S90D is attractive when multiple HDMI inputs need high-refresh-rate support, and the Sony A95L makes the most sense for a buyer who specifically wants a premium Sony TV for PS5 use. This is a specification-based guide rather than a lab-tested ranking: the response times, refresh rates and other manufacturer figures below should not be treated as independently measured input lag or picture-quality results.

What a PS5 or Xbox Series X actually needs

4K/120Hz input, not just a 120Hz panel

Both consoles are designed around 4K output, and compatible games can target up to 120Hz or 120 frames per second. Sony’s PS5 documentation specifically tells owners to confirm that the TV supports 4K/120Hz and that the console is connected to the appropriate HDMI 2.1 port. Microsoft lists up to 120 FPS for Xbox Series X and includes an HDMI 2.1 port on the console.

The distinction between a panel’s refresh rate and its input capability is important. A TV can advertise 120Hz or 144Hz while accepting a lower-refresh-rate signal from a particular HDMI input. Before buying, look for a specification that explicitly identifies 4K at 120Hz—or a higher input rate—for the HDMI port you intend to use.

HDMI 2.1 and the port map

HDMI 2.1 is the relevant connection standard for the highest-bandwidth console modes discussed here. However, the label by itself does not tell you how many ports support every feature. Some televisions have several HDMI inputs but reserve full 4K/120Hz, VRR or ALLM support for only one or two of them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the exact port table for the model and size you are considering. This matters even more if you use a soundbar, AV receiver, disc player or another console. Connecting the PS5 or Xbox directly to a full-featured TV input is the simplest way to avoid an intermediate device limiting the signal.

VRR

Variable refresh rate synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with the console’s graphical output when the game and TV support the feature. That synchronization can reduce visible tearing and make uneven frame delivery less distracting. VRR is not a guarantee that every game will run at a fixed 120 frames per second; it is a display feature that helps the screen adapt to changing output.

Check both sides of the connection. The TV must support VRR on the input being used, the console must have VRR enabled, and the game must support an appropriate mode. Some TV menus expose VRR through a gaming dashboard rather than a setting named simply VRR.

ALLM and Game Mode

Auto low-latency mode lets the console signal the TV to switch to a low-latency picture mode. Depending on the brand, you may see this described as ALLM, Auto Low Latency Mode, Game Mode or a gaming optimizer setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ALLM depends on the TV’s compatibility and configuration. If the TV does not switch automatically, select Game Mode manually and confirm that the setting applies to the HDMI input connected to the console.

120Hz versus 144Hz

A 144Hz television can accept a higher refresh rate from compatible PC hardware, which is useful headroom for a mixed PC-and-console setup. It does not make a PS5 or Xbox Series X output more than the console and game support. For these consoles, the practical target remains up to 120Hz.

The cable

For a 4K/120Hz setup with HDR, VRR or other HDMI 2.1 features, look for an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable with the official certification language. HDMI.org’s certification program is intended to support 4K/120Hz, HDR, VRR, eARC and related HDMI 2.1 features.

Do not assume that every cable labeled HDMI 2.1 is equivalent. If you need to replace a cable, check the packaging or product listing for the Ultra High Speed HDMI certification rather than choosing solely on the words HDMI 2.1 or on a premium price.

The best gaming TVs for PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2024

LG C4 OLED: best all-around gaming feature set

The LG C4 OLED is the clearest general recommendation when you want a broad set of gaming features in one TV. LG’s U.S. product information lists 144Hz gaming support, NVIDIA G-Sync, AMD FreeSync Premium and a 0.1ms response-time specification for the C4 model covered by the research.

For console owners, the useful takeaway is not that a PS5 or Xbox Series X can use 144Hz. Rather, the C4 offers advertised headroom beyond the consoles’ documented 120Hz target, which is relevant if the same display will also be used with a compatible gaming PC. It is a strong fit for a household with several gaming sources and for buyers who want console-ready 4K/120Hz support without giving up PC-oriented refresh-rate features.

  • Best fit: PS5 or Xbox owners who may also connect a gaming PC.
  • Why it stands out: A broad advertised gaming feature set, including 144Hz, G-Sync and FreeSync Premium.
  • Watch out for: LG’s 0.1ms and refresh-rate figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of total system input lag.

Verify the exact C4 screen size and model suffix in the listing. Specifications and included features should be checked against the size-specific product page before purchase.

  • Dolby Vision*Atmos: Combine Dolby Vision HDR imaging with Dolby Atmos sound to get engaging audio-visual performance, transforming your TV into an entertainment powerhouse with detailed images and acoustics, so as to achieve amazing realism that you'll see, hear, and feel like never before. • Game Mode: Game mode supports many gaming features such as ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and eARC. With the combination of Ultimate Motion, breathtaking reality and excitement make your gaming experience unforgettable.

Samsung S90D OLED: best when several HDMI inputs need high refresh rates

The Samsung S90D OLED is the most straightforward option in this group for buyers who want high-refresh-rate flexibility across multiple connected devices. On the reviewed U.S. product page, Samsung lists a maximum HDMI input rate of 4K/144Hz for HDMI inputs 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That port flexibility can simplify a setup containing a PS5, Xbox Series X and gaming PC. It does not mean that either console will produce more than 120Hz. The benefit is that the TV accepts high-refresh-rate signals from compatible sources, while console gameplay remains limited by the source device and the game’s own performance mode.

  • Best fit: Homes with multiple consoles or a PC that need more than one high-refresh-rate HDMI input.
  • Why it stands out: The reviewed size-specific specification lists 4K/144Hz input across all four HDMI inputs.
  • Watch out for: Samsung model numbers and suffixes vary by screen size and market. Do not assume that a specification from one size applies unchanged to every S90D variant.

Check the exact regional listing, port capabilities and screen size before ordering. If a receiver or soundbar will sit between the console and TV, confirm that it can pass through the desired 4K/120Hz and VRR signal; connecting the console directly to the TV is the safer starting point.

Sony A95L OLED: premium PS5-oriented option

The Sony A95L OLED is a natural premium match for a PS5 owner who wants a Sony television with clearly documented console-oriented features. Sony’s product information identifies two HDMI inputs with full HDMI 2.1 features, including 4K/120, VRR and ALLM. Sony also provides model-specific PS5 feature documentation for the television.

That makes the A95L a sensible choice for a PS5-focused installation, but it should not be described as categorically the best PS5 TV without independent testing. The cited specifications establish compatibility features; they do not independently rank its input lag, HDR performance, viewing angles, upscaling or overall picture quality.

  • Best fit: A buyer prioritizing a premium Sony-and-PS5 setup.
  • Why it stands out: Two documented full-featured HDMI 2.1 inputs with 4K/120, VRR and ALLM.
  • Watch out for: There are two full HDMI 2.1 inputs identified on the cited product page, so port planning matters. The A95L is also a 2023 model, and new, refurbished and used availability can differ by size and retailer.

If you connect both a PS5 and Xbox Series X—or add a gaming PC—map your devices before buying. Two full-featured inputs may be sufficient, but they leave less flexibility than a set where more HDMI inputs support the required modes.

Which one should you buy?

Your priority Best starting point Reason
The broadest advertised gaming feature set LG C4 OLED It combines console-ready 4K/120Hz support with advertised 144Hz, G-Sync and FreeSync Premium features.
Several devices connected at high refresh rates Samsung S90D OLED The reviewed size-specific page lists 4K/144Hz input on all four HDMI inputs.
A premium Sony TV chosen around PS5 compatibility Sony A95L OLED Sony documents two full HDMI 2.1 inputs with 4K/120, VRR and ALLM and provides PS5-specific support information.
Only 4K/60Hz gaming is required Compare more than these three models You may not need the highest-bandwidth features, so price, size and non-gaming priorities can reasonably change the decision.

There is no need to pay for 144Hz specifically to unlock extra PS5 or Xbox performance. Choose it when you also use a compatible PC or want additional input headroom. For console-only buyers, the more important checks are genuine 4K/120Hz input, VRR, ALLM and the number of HDMI ports that support them.

How to set up 4K/120Hz gaming

  1. Identify the correct TV port. Before connecting anything, consult the exact TV manual or model-specific port table. Choose the HDMI input documented for 4K/120Hz or full HDMI 2.1 features. Do not select a port merely because the TV has the HDMI 2.1 label somewhere on its product page.
  2. Connect the console directly to the TV. Use a direct connection for the initial setup. If the console is routed through a receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch, that device may become the limiting component.
  3. Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI-certified cable. This is especially important when targeting 4K/120Hz together with HDR or VRR. Replace an unverified cable before spending time diagnosing the TV.
  4. Put the TV in its gaming mode. Enable Game Mode, Game Optimizer or the brand’s equivalent. If ALLM works, the console should be able to request this mode, but manually confirm it if the TV does not switch.
  5. Configure a PS5. On current PS5 software, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic and VRR to Automatic when those options are available. The exact labels can change with system software, so use the TV’s signal-information screen as the final check.
  6. Configure an Xbox Series X. Open Settings > General > TV & display options. Set the resolution to 4K UHD and the refresh rate to 120Hz when the connected TV reports that it supports those modes. Under Video modes, enable Allow 4K and Allow variable refresh rate where supported.
  7. Check the output information. On the PS5, use the Video Output Information screen; on Xbox, use the TV & display options diagnostics. Confirm that the console recognizes 4K and 120Hz capability rather than assuming that the setting has taken effect.
  8. Test a game that supports a 120Hz mode. A console setting alone does not force every game to render at 120 frames per second. Some titles expose a performance or 120Hz option in their own menus, while others remain at a lower frame rate.

Troubleshooting 4K/120Hz and VRR problems

The console only offers 60Hz

  1. Move the console to the TV input specifically documented for 4K/120Hz or HDMI 2.1.
  2. Replace the cable with an Ultra High Speed HDMI-certified cable.
  3. Connect the console directly to the TV rather than through an AV receiver, soundbar or switch.
  4. Check that the console resolution is set appropriately and that 120Hz Output or the equivalent setting is Automatic.
  5. Update the TV firmware and console system software.
  6. Check the TV’s input signal information to determine whether the problem is the port, cable or console setting.

If the display works at 1080p/120Hz but not 4K/120Hz, that usually points to a bandwidth or compatibility problem somewhere in the connection chain. Recheck the port map and cable certification first.

VRR is unavailable or greyed out

Confirm that VRR is enabled on both the console and the TV, then verify that the console is connected to a VRR-capable HDMI input. Game Mode may be required. Also remember that VRR support does not mean every game supports a variable-refresh mode; test with a compatible title after the TV and console recognize one another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TV does not enter Game Mode automatically

ALLM is dependent on the TV and its current settings. Turn on Game Mode manually and check whether the TV has an ALLM or auto-switching option in its gaming menu. If the console is connected through another HDMI device, connect it directly to rule out that device blocking the signal.

The screen goes blank, flickers or loses the signal

Power off the console and TV, reseat both HDMI ends and try the TV’s documented high-bandwidth port again. Test with a certified cable and a direct connection, then update the TV firmware. If necessary, temporarily test a simpler signal such as 4K/60Hz to isolate whether the failure occurs only when 120Hz or VRR is enabled.

Buying checklist

  • Does the exact TV size and model suffix accept 4K/120Hz input?
  • Which HDMI inputs support 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM?
  • Are enough full-featured ports available for your PS5, Xbox Series X, PC and audio equipment?
  • Does the television support VRR on the input you will use?
  • Does the listing identify the manufacturer’s advertised refresh rate separately from its HDMI input rate?
  • Will you need an Ultra High Speed HDMI-certified cable?
  • Are you checking a current listing for the exact size, region, condition and included accessories?
  • Are you treating advertised response time and refresh rate as specifications rather than independent measurements?

Do not rely on an old comparison chart for current price, inventory or size availability. The LG C4 and Samsung S90D listings can vary by size and region, while the Sony A95L may appear as new, refurbished or used stock depending on the seller. Verify those details immediately before purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 144Hz TV better than a 120Hz TV for PS5?

Not because of the PS5’s console output. PS5 and Xbox Series X target up to 120Hz, so 144Hz does not provide extra console frame rate beyond that limit. A 144Hz specification is more useful when the TV will also be connected to a compatible gaming PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do all HDMI ports on a gaming TV support 4K/120Hz?

No. Port capabilities vary by model. The Samsung S90D page reviewed here lists 4K/144Hz input for all four HDMI inputs, while Sony identifies two full HDMI 2.1 inputs on the A95L. Always check the exact port map for the size and regional version you intend to buy.

Do I need an HDMI 2.1 cable for PS5 or Xbox Series X?

For a 4K/120Hz setup with VRR and related features, choose an Ultra High Speed HDMI-certified cable. The words HDMI 2.1 on a generic listing are not, by themselves, enough evidence that the cable has the relevant certification.

Which TV is best specifically for PS5?

The Sony A95L is the most naturally PS5-oriented choice in this guide because Sony documents two full HDMI 2.1 inputs and model-specific PS5 compatibility features. That is a compatibility recommendation, not an independently tested picture-quality or input-lag verdict. The LG C4 and Samsung S90D are also strong feature-based options for PS5 owners.

Will every PS5 or Xbox game run at 120 frames per second?

No. The console and TV can support up to 120Hz, but the game must provide a suitable performance mode and the developer’s frame-rate target still applies. A 4K/120Hz-capable TV gives the console the opportunity to use that mode; it does not create it in games that do not support it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 144Hz TV better than a 120Hz TV for PS5?

Not because of the PS5’s console output. PS5 and Xbox Series X target up to 120Hz, so 144Hz does not provide extra console frame rate beyond that limit. It is more useful when the TV is also connected to a compatible gaming PC.

Do all HDMI ports on a gaming TV support 4K/120Hz?

No. Port capabilities vary by model. Check the exact size-specific port map; some TVs reserve full 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM support for only one or two HDMI inputs.

Do I need an HDMI 2.1 cable for PS5 or Xbox Series X?

For 4K/120Hz with VRR and related features, choose an Ultra High Speed HDMI-certified cable. The words HDMI 2.1 on a generic listing are not, by themselves, enough evidence of certification.

Which TV is best specifically for PS5?

The Sony A95L is the most naturally PS5-oriented option here because Sony documents two full HDMI 2.1 inputs and model-specific PS5 compatibility features. That is a compatibility recommendation, not an independently tested picture-quality or input-lag verdict.

Will every PS5 or Xbox game run at 120 frames per second?

No. The console and TV can support up to 120Hz, but the game must provide a suitable performance mode and its own frame-rate target still applies.

The Bottom Line

For most PS5 and Xbox Series X owners, choose the LG C4 OLED for the broadest advertised gaming feature set, the Samsung S90D OLED when several HDMI inputs need high-refresh-rate support, or the Sony A95L OLED for a premium, PS5-oriented Sony setup. Whichever model you choose, verify the exact HDMI port, 4K/120Hz input support, VRR, ALLM and Ultra High Speed HDMI cable certification before buying.
