6 Best Hermes Agent Hosting Providers in 2026 (Ranked for Local-Model Owners)

If inference is already yours — an Ollama box under the desk, a vLLM instance on a rented card — the hosting question shrinks to one thing: where does the agent itself live, and what happens to its skills when that machine dies? Our top pick is Cloudways Managed AI Agents, from $9.99/month, because it is the only option here that includes automated daily backups with restore plus validated agent version updates. If you would rather own every layer, Hetzner Cloud at €4.49/month is the cheapest always-on home for the agent. If that same box also drives a headless browser, Contabo gives you 8 GB for €5.50/month.

Hermes Agent is Nous Research’s MIT-licensed autonomous agent, released February 2026 and billed by the project as “the agent that grows with you”. It ships no model. You connect your own, which is why local-model owners are a natural audience — and why the hosting decision is about state, uptime and network position rather than raw compute.

The reason to split the two is unglamorous. Your GPU rig reboots for driver updates, gets swapped between models, and occasionally gets used for something else entirely. The agent needs to stay reachable through all of that, because it holds cron jobs, messaging surfaces and, most importantly, everything it has learned.

Key takeaways

  • Cloudways Scout costs $9.99/month and is the only pick here bundling automated daily backups, restore and Cloudways-validated agent updates.
  • Hetzner’s CX22 at €4.49/month (plus €0.50 for IPv4, excluding VAT) is the cheapest always-on box — with patching, firewalling and snapshots entirely your job.
  • Only two published uptime figures exist across this whole comparison: Contabo 99.9% and Kamatera 99.95%. Everyone else publishes nothing on the relevant page.
  • Hermes ships six execution backends — local, Docker, SSH, Daytona, Singularity, Modal — so the machine holding your skills does not have to be the machine running risky code.
  • With inference on your own hardware, hosting of $5–$20/month is very nearly the entire recurring bill.

At a glance: six hosts for an agent whose model lives elsewhere

How we ranked these

The axis is narrow on purpose: you already own inference, so nothing here is scored on CPU muscle. In order of weight, we asked:

  • Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti GPU

  • Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
  • Does the agent stay up when your rig does not? That is the entire argument for hosting it elsewhere.
  • Does the host protect state by default? The skills directory, the recall database and the configuration are the only irreplaceable things on the box. Included backups outrank vCPU.
  • Region reach. Every tool call round-trips prompts to your endpoint, so where a host can physically put the box is a performance feature.
  • Published terms. A written uptime guarantee beats a marketing adjective, and we only credit figures that exist on the relevant page.
  • Commitment honesty. A 24-month price and a monthly price are not the same product.

The plain admission: we did not benchmark these hosts. No load tests, no latency measurements, no independent uptime monitoring. This is a comparison of published terms, prices and defaults as read on 28 and 29 August 2026. Vultr’s prices come from third-party pricing trackers because the vendor page would not load on the day, and are marked approximate throughout. Where a provider publishes no uptime figure, we say so instead of guessing.

1. Cloudways Managed AI Agents: best for keeping the skills library alive while you mind the GPU

Cloudways is part of DigitalOcean, and its Managed AI Agents product became generally available in 2026 supporting both Hermes and OpenClaw. It positions Hermes as “the agent built for safe, isolated multi-agent work”. Each customer gets a dedicated instance, Cloudways-validated agent version updates, automated daily backups with restore, managed SSL, SSH access, region selection and 24/7 support.

It leads this list because of division of labour, not power. After any task that takes five or more tool calls, Hermes summarises the trajectory into a reusable Markdown skill file with a YAML frontmatter header. It also refines skills during use, runs cross-session recall over past conversations, and builds a persistent model of you. All of that sits on your disk. There is no vendor-side copy unless you arranged one.

If you have already taken on inference — driver versions, VRAM budgets, quantisation, a box that gets hot — the agent layer is the one worth handing to somebody whose default behaviour is a daily backup you can actually restore.

Plans: Scout $9.99/mo (1 vCPU, 2 GB, 50 GB, 2 TB), Operator $19.99 (2 vCPU, 4 GB, 80 GB, 3 TB), Squad $39.99 (4 vCPU, 8 GB, 160 GB, 5 TB), Swarm $79.99 (8 vCPU, 16 GB, 320 GB, 6 TB). A 50% limited-time discount was running at the time of writing. The product page states plainly: “Your LLM costs stay with your provider” — precisely the arrangement when the provider is a machine in your spare room.

Watch for: no uptime percentage or SLA appears on the product page, so there is no published number to hold them to. Validated updates also mean update timing is theirs — if you pin an agent version to match a local endpoint’s quirks, check that you can defer. And Scout is roughly double Hetzner’s entry price for a similar shape of box. You are buying the backup and update pipeline, not the vCPU.

2. Hetzner Cloud: best for the cheapest always-on box you fully control

No Hermes template exists here, and the single-command installer makes that close to irrelevant: curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash installs prerequisites automatically on Linux, macOS, WSL2 and Android via Termux.

Pricing is CX22 at €4.49/month and CAX11 at €5.99/month, plus €0.50 for an IPv4 address, all excluding VAT. Locations are Germany, Finland, Singapore and two US sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For this reader, the appeal is that you are buying uptime and a stable network endpoint rather than compute. Scheduled and cron tasks, 20-plus messaging surfaces and inbound webhooks all need something that is awake at 04:00; the GPU does not. Around €5 a month is the correct price for that job, and Hetzner is the only entry on this list where the total stays there.

Watch for: everything operational is yours. Patching, firewall rules, snapshot schedules and execution isolation are all setup you perform, and on a host whose value is the state on its disk, an unconfigured snapshot policy is the real risk. Hetzner publishes no uptime figure for cloud plans. Five locations is also the narrowest reach here — if your inference box is nowhere near them, measure the round trip before you commit.

3. Contabo: best for when the agent box also drives a browser

Cloud VPS 4 gives 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM and 100 GB SSD for €5.50/month on a 24-month term, tax included. VPS 6 (6 vCPU, 12 GB) is €7.50 and VPS 8 (8 vCPU, 24 GB) is €14.00. Traffic is unlimited, DDoS protection is free, there are 11 locations, and Contabo publishes a 99.9% uptime guarantee — one of only two published figures in this comparison.

Moving inference off the box does not shrink the agent’s other appetite. Hermes ships 60-plus built-in tools including browser automation, vision, image generation, text-to-speech, terminal access, file editing and code execution. Memory becomes the binding constraint the moment a headless browser opens, and 8 GB for €5.50 is the most headroom per euro on this page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch for: that price requires a 24-month commitment, which is a long time in a project that shipped roughly 3,650 commits between two releases. vCPUs are shared. There are no agent-specific docs. Backups are a paid add-on, which stings more here than elsewhere given what lives on the disk, and there is no compliance story to speak of.

4. Kamatera: best for putting the agent near your inference endpoint

Entry cloud servers start at $4/month for 1 vCPU at 2667 MHz, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB NVMe SSD, 5 TB traffic and Ubuntu 24.04. Hourly servers are billed by the minute — one published example rate is $0.014/hr. There are 18 global locations, no long-term commitment, and a 30-day trial worth up to $100. The 99.95% uptime guarantee spans servers, CPUs, firewalls, load balancers and storage, and is the highest published figure here.

Windows 11 Pro, performance-mode switching, Wake-on-LAN and auto power-on support flexible workstation use.

The combination that matters for local-model owners is 18 locations plus per-minute billing. You can stand up candidate agent boxes in three regions, measure the actual round trip to your own endpoint under a real workload, keep the winner and destroy the rest for a trivial sum. Latency between agent and model is the one variable nobody else on this list lets you test that cheaply.

Watch for: no Hermes template, so you are on the installer. And 1 GB of RAM is thin the moment browser automation or Docker-isolated tools run — treat the $4 tier as a latency probe or a chat-surfaces-only agent, then size up from evidence. Our sources do not cover whether backups are included, so confirm rather than assume.

5. DigitalOcean: best for a one-click start with published hardening defaults

DigitalOcean lists a Hermes Agent Marketplace 1-Click App alongside its OpenClaw image, and publishes explainer material on what Hermes is and how self-hosting works. Its agent-image hardening approach is documented publicly on the OpenClaw image: a Caddy reverse proxy with Let’s Encrypt TLS issued against the IP, a generated gateway token, device pairing, ephemeral Docker containers for execution, fail2ban, unattended upgrades and rate-limited ports.

That list is worth reading even if you deploy elsewhere, because it is a defensible default configuration written down by someone who had to support it. The ephemeral-container choice is the piece local-model owners should copy: tool execution happens in a container that goes away, while the skills and recall data persist on the host.

Watch for: pricing needs checking before you budget. DigitalOcean’s own OpenClaw materials cite both $12/month and a $24/month minimum in different places, so confirm the current Droplet size recommendation and price on the live listing. No SLA figure appears on Marketplace listings. Also note that Cloudways is part of DigitalOcean, so entries 1 and 5 share a parent and differ mainly in how much of the operational work is done for you.

6. Vultr: best for matching a rented GPU instance’s region

Vultr operates 32 data centres across 19 countries with hourly billing. Cloud Compute Regular is listed at about $5/month (1 vCPU, 1 GB, 25 GB SSD, 1 TB) and about $10/month (1 vCPU, 2 GB, 55 GB SSD, 2 TB), with High Performance from about $6/month. Those figures come from third-party pricing trackers read on 29 August 2026, because the vendor’s own page would not load that day — treat them as indicative and confirm before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It earns a place because “local model” increasingly means a rented GPU-hour instance rather than hardware you own. When the model moves between regions chasing capacity, an hourly-billed agent box with 32 locations to choose from can follow it without a contract to unwind.

Watch for: the sourcing caveat above is the main one — nothing on this entry’s pricing was read from the vendor. There is no agent template, so installation and hardening are yours. No verified uptime figure exists. And the 1 GB tier has the same ceiling as Kamatera’s entry plan: fine for chat surfaces and light tools, cramped once a browser opens.

Where each piece actually runs

The most useful thing a local-model owner can do is stop treating “hosting Hermes” as one decision. It is at least four, and they can live in different places.

Layer Where it belongs Why
The agent process, skills, recall index, config Small always-on VPS (entries 1–6) Must survive reboots of everything else; irreplaceable state
Model inference Your GPU box or rented GPU instance, via Ollama or vLLM VRAM is the constraint; keep it off the agent box entirely
Tool execution Local, Docker, SSH to another machine, or Daytona/Modal Six backends ship with the agent; risky code need not touch your skills disk
Chat surfaces and scheduled jobs The agent box 20+ messaging surfaces and cron tasks require constant uptime
Backups Off the agent box Skills directory, memory/recall database, configuration — all three

Hermes supports 20-plus model providers, including Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, direct Anthropic and local Ollama or vLLM endpoints. The documentation’s own line is that the agent “lives wherever you put it — a $5 VPS, a GPU cluster, or serverless infrastructure”. The project documentation and the MIT-licensed repository are the reference for backend configuration.

Skills are state, and state is a supply chain

Two consequences of the learning loop deserve a line in your hosting budget.

First, an instance that is never wiped gets cheaper to run. Because repeated work becomes stored skills, a well-used agent tends to re-derive less of the same procedure over time. If you are paying an API, that shows up as fewer tokens. If inference is yours, it shows up as less wall-clock on your own card — which is the version of the argument nobody makes.

Second, skills are portable, shareable and community-contributed via the Skills Hub, with compatibility for agentskills.io. Portability cuts both ways. As ecosystem-wide context, not Hermes incidents: Cisco documented a third-party agent skill performing data exfiltration and prompt injection in late January 2026, and by 1 March 2026 researchers counted 1,184 confirmed malicious skills across more than 10,700 packages. Read an imported skill the way you would read a browser extension’s permissions. Hermes’ MCP support includes credential filtering, which is worth configuring before you need it. The neighbouring OpenClaw project’s gateway security documentation covers the same class of exposure problem if you want a second checklist.

How to choose

Start from the sizing ladder below, which is guidance rather than a specification — the project publishes no fixed RAM or CPU requirement, and its own advice is to monitor demand and resize from evidence.

Use Start at Binding constraint
Chat surfaces, light tools, model on your own box 1 vCPU, 2 GB, 50 GB Nothing for months; idle most of the day
Browser automation, scheduled jobs, Docker-isolated execution 2 vCPU, 4 GB, 80 GB Memory, as soon as a headless browser opens
Several projects, sub-agent delegation, heavy file work 4 vCPU, 8 GB, 160 GB Disk — skills, logs, recall index and downloads accumulate
Local model via Ollama or vLLM Separate GPU instance VRAM; keep inference off the agent box

Then apply three filters. If losing your skills library would genuinely hurt, buy included backups rather than promising yourself you will script them — that points to Cloudways. If you enjoy running servers and want the lowest total, Hetzner. If the agent box does browser and Docker work alongside your own inference, Contabo’s 8 GB at €5.50 is the value pick, provided the 24-month term is acceptable.

Also considered, and why they are not in the six: Modal and Daytona are execution backends, not hosts — they give serverless persistence, hibernating when idle and costing nearly nothing between tasks, but you still have to host the agent somewhere, and they add cold starts, harder-to-forecast per-second billing and another vendor inside your trust boundary. GPU hosts such as RunPod, Vast.ai and Hyperstack are relevant to the model, not the agent, and are billed per GPU-hour. Running the agent on your own desktop is legitimate for a single user with nothing sensitive, but scheduled work stops when the machine sleeps. Akamai Cloud, formerly Linode, has 24-plus data centres across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, São Paulo and Jakarta, and positions itself on “no hidden fees, no egress surprises, and no vendor lock-in” — but no prices were readable on the day, so we will not rank what we cannot quote.

FAQ

Can a $5 VPS really run Hermes if my model runs at home?

Yes, for the common case. With inference elsewhere, the agent box handles orchestration, tool calls, messaging surfaces and scheduled jobs — none of which is compute-heavy. The project’s own documentation says the agent lives wherever you put it, “a $5 VPS, a GPU cluster, or serverless infrastructure”. The limit is memory, not CPU: 1 GB tiers cope with chat surfaces and light tools, but a headless browser will exhaust them quickly. Start at 2 GB if browser automation is in your plans, and treat resizing as normal operations rather than a mistake.

Does the agent box need a GPU?

No. If you run models via Ollama or vLLM, keep that on a separate instance where VRAM is the constraint, and leave the agent on a small CPU server. Mixing them means your agent goes down whenever you swap models or update drivers, and it wastes GPU memory on a process that spends most of its day idle. The honest general position is that for most workloads a small CPU server plus a metered API key costs far less than a rented GPU idling between tasks — but if you already own the card, the split above is the configuration that makes it pay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What exactly should I back up?

Three things: the skills directory, the memory and recall database, and the configuration. Those are the parts that cannot be reinstalled. The agent binary, the operating system and every tool can be rebuilt from an installer in minutes; a year of accumulated skills cannot. This is why Cloudways’ automated daily backups with restore carry so much weight in this ranking, and why Contabo’s paid backup add-on deserves budgeting rather than skipping. Verify a restore at least once. An untested backup is a belief, not a recovery plan.

How should the agent reach my Ollama or vLLM endpoint?

Over a private network path — a VPN or tunnel between the agent host and the machine serving the model — rather than an inference port opened to the public internet. An endpoint on an open port is an unauthenticated compute service that anyone can find. Region choice matters here too: every tool call round-trips prompts and completions, so an agent box on another continent from your GPU adds latency to each step of a multi-step task. Kamatera’s 18 locations and Vultr’s 32 data centres exist in this ranking largely for that reason.

Do I need Modal or Daytona if I already own hardware?

Not to start. They are execution backends offering serverless persistence — the environment hibernates when idle and costs nearly nothing between tasks — which suits bursty or risky execution you want off your main box. But they do not host the agent, they add cold-start latency, per-second billing is harder to forecast than a flat monthly fee, and each one is another vendor inside your trust boundary. Add one once you understand your actual workload and can name the problem it solves. Hermes’ Docker and SSH backends cover most isolation needs without a new account.

How much maintenance should I expect?

More than a static site, less than a database. Version 0.20.0 landed on 3 August 2026 with roughly 3,650 commits, 1,400 merged pull requests and 1,200 closed issues since 0.19.0, and curated release notes for 0.20.0 ship with 0.21.0. At that pace, “who updates this” is a genuine hosting decision. Cloudways answers it with validated agent version updates on their schedule. On Hetzner, Contabo, Kamatera or Vultr the answer is you, so put it in a calendar and snapshot before every upgrade rather than after.
