Steam Deck OLED is the better handheld for most buyers because SteamOS 3 is more console-like, its complete weight is lower, and its HDR OLED display has superior contrast. The original Lenovo Legion Go is better for Windows 11, a larger 144Hz screen, detachable controllers, and Z1 Extreme hardware headroom.
Key takeaways

Steam Deck OLED vs Legion Go: which handheld is better?
For most readers, Steam Deck OLED is the better handheld because SteamOS 3 delivers a more focused console-like experience, the complete system is lighter, and the OLED screen has excellent contrast. Lenovo Legion Go is better for Windows 11, a larger 144Hz display, detachable controls, FPS mode, and Z1 Extreme performance headroom.
The Lenovo product in this comparison is the original Legion Go 8APU1, introduced in 2023. Lenovo also sold that model with Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme processors and with 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage, so the exact configuration matters.
| What matters most | Recommended handheld | Why |
|---|---|---|

Why does Steam Deck OLED feel more like a console?
Steam Deck OLED feels more like a console because SteamOS 3 is the primary interface rather than a desktop operating system. The focused interface, integrated controls, and Steam library emphasis make the Deck a better fit for readers who want to pick up the device and play.

SteamOS does not make every PC game universally compatible. Some games and launchers may require compatibility checks or workarounds. Legion Go’s Windows 11 environment is less focused but gives users direct access to Windows applications and PC storefronts.
Is Legion Go’s screen better than Steam Deck OLED’s screen?
Legion Go’s screen is better for size, resolution, and maximum refresh rate; Steam Deck OLED’s screen is better for OLED contrast and HDR impact. Valve’s technical specification page lists Steam Deck OLED at 7.4 inches, 1280×800, HDR, up to 90Hz, and 1,000-nit HDR peak brightness.
Lenovo’s 8APU1 PSREF dated January 22, 2025 lists Legion Go at 8.8 inches, 2560×1600, IPS touchscreen, up to 144Hz, 500 nits, and 97% DCI-P3.
A larger 1600p panel can make games and desktop text look sharper, but rendering at 1600p can be demanding. The Legion Go’s 144Hz capability is most useful in games that can reach higher frame rates.

Which handheld has the stronger hardware?
Legion Go Z1 Extreme has the stronger specification-based hardware proposition. Lenovo lists 8 CPU cores and 16 threads for the Z1 Extreme and documents a 25W custom mode. Steam Deck OLED uses a 6nm AMD APU with Zen 2, 4 cores, 8 threads, and a 4–15W APU power range.
Those specifications suggest more performance headroom for the Legion Go Z1 Extreme, particularly while plugged in. They do not constitute an independent benchmark comparison. The actual result depends on game engine, resolution, graphics settings, thermals, power mode, and battery state.
Do not assume every original Legion Go has the Z1 Extreme. The 8APU1 family includes Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme configurations.
Which handheld has better battery life?
Steam Deck OLED has a 50Wh battery and Valve rates it for 3–12 hours of gameplay. Valve’s OLED announcement also states that Steam Deck OLED has “30-50% more battery life.”

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Legion Go has a 49.2Wh battery. Lenovo lists up to 7.1 hours under MobileMark 25 and 7.55 hours of 1080p video playback at 150 nits. Because the companies use different tests, brightness levels, workloads, and assumptions, the figures cannot prove which handheld lasts longer in every game.
In either device, demanding AAA games, high brightness, high refresh rates, and aggressive performance profiles reduce endurance. Battery capacity is close enough that the buyer’s workload matters more than the small capacity difference.
What are the controller and weight trade-offs?
Steam Deck OLED has integrated controls, two 32.5mm haptic trackpads, four assignable rear grip buttons, capacitive-touch sticks, and gyro. The integrated design is convenient and keeps the complete handheld relatively light.
Legion Go’s controllers detach, and its kickstand enables tabletop gaming. The right controller includes FPS mode, while the overall control set includes a touchpad, mouse wheel, function buttons, and gyro. Lenovo’s official launch release says the controllers use hall-effect joysticks and are designed for no joystick drift and minimal dead zones. This is a Lenovo statement, not a third-party test.

Which is better for Game Pass, launchers, and PC work?
Legion Go is the safer choice for readers whose main priority is Windows software, PC launchers, or Game Pass. Steam Deck OLED is the better choice for readers with a Steam-first library who prefer a controller-friendly interface.
Windows expands software access but brings desktop maintenance. SteamOS reduces that complexity but does not offer universal support for every Windows title or launcher. The better ecosystem depends on the applications and games the reader actually uses.
