As of August 17, 2026, Borderlands 2 is not evidenced as free to claim on Steam: the retrieved official listings show paid editions, while the previously reported giveaway ended June 8. A legitimate free copy is possible only during an official, time-limited Steam promotion that you claim before its deadline.
That distinction matters because search results often mix expired giveaways, discounts, free trials, and unsafe download pages. The practical question is not where to download a “free” copy, but whether Steam currently grants a permanent entitlement to your account.
Key takeaways
- Borderlands 2 is not evidenced as free to claim on Steam as of August 17, 2026; the retrieved official listings show paid purchase options.
- A previous Steam giveaway ended June 8 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, so that promotion is expired.
- A legitimate free-to-keep claim must appear on the official Steam page or in an official Steam or Borderlands announcement.
- The Game of the Year Edition includes Borderlands 2 and multiple DLC packs, while the base edition provides the core game.
- The Steam listing includes single-player and co-op play, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, Remote Play, and a required third-party SHiFT account.
Is Borderlands 2 free on Steam right now?
As of August 17, 2026, no active free-to-keep Steam offer is evidenced for Borderlands 2. The retrieved Steam listings show the game as a paid product with purchase options for the base game, the Game of the Year Edition, and a four-copy package. Steam promotions and regional pricing can change, so check the live official listing immediately before purchasing.
A 75% discount snapshot ending August 10, 2026, is also already expired. A discount is not the same as a free claim: a discounted game still requires a purchase and remains attached to the account through that purchase.

How can you get Borderlands 2 free on PC legally?
Borderlands 2 can be free to keep on PC only when an official, time-limited promotion makes the game free to claim. During a genuine promotion, open the official Steam listing while the offer is active, confirm that Steam provides an “Add to Account” or equivalent free-claim flow, and complete the claim before the displayed deadline.
- Sign in to your own Steam account through the official Steam client or Steam website.
- Open the official Borderlands 2 listing and inspect the current offer details.
- Confirm that the page explicitly offers a free claim, not merely a sale, free trial, temporary access period, or downloadable demo.
- Check the promotion’s end date, time, and regional restrictions.
- Complete the claim before the deadline, then install Borderlands 2 from the Steam client’s Library.
The previous giveaway reported by the Borderlands 2 Steam Community announcement ended June 8 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Because August 17, 2026, is later than that deadline, the announcement is historical evidence rather than a current way to obtain the game.
How do you verify that a Borderlands 2 giveaway is genuine?
A genuine Borderlands 2 Steam giveaway should be visible on the official Steam listing or in an official Steam or Borderlands announcement. The page should explain the claim action and deadline without requiring a suspicious executable, an unauthorized product key, or credentials entered outside Steam.

| Unverified key or download site | The entitlement or software is not confirmed by Steam or the publisher. | Avoid it, especially if it requests Steam credentials or unknown downloads. |
What are the legitimate paid Borderlands 2 options?
If no free-to-keep offer is active, the legitimate fallback is to buy Borderlands 2 through Steam. The base game is the straightforward choice for the core campaign, while the Game of the Year Edition is the broader package for readers who want the listed expansions and add-on content.

|---|---|---|
| Borderlands 2 base game | The main Borderlands 2 game. | Players who want the core experience at the lowest available edition price. |
| Borderlands 2 Game of the Year Edition | Borderlands 2 plus Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty, the Psycho Pack, Collector’s Edition Pack, Creature Slaughterdome, Mechromancer Pack, Mr. Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage, Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt, Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, and the Ultimate Vault Hunters Upgrade Pack. | Players who want the main game and the listed DLC in one bundle. |
| Four-copy package | Multiple copies intended for distribution among accounts, subject to Steam’s current terms. | Groups buying together, not an individual seeking a free entitlement. |
The DLC lineup and edition information are also identified in Take-Two’s Borderlands 2 Game of the Year Edition announcement. Steam prices, discounts, and regional availability are volatile; use the live Steam page for the current amount rather than relying on an older price snapshot.

- Requires Steam Client to activate. Steam key only valid in North America.
Steam lists a September 17, 2012 release date, Windows, macOS, and SteamOS + Linux support, at least 13 GB of hard-disk space, and a one-time internet connection for Steam authentication. These are the requirements displayed by Steam and are not a guarantee of compatibility with every modern operating-system release. A third-party SHiFT account is required, and the game requires agreement to a third-party EULA.
Which Borderlands 2 “free” downloads should you avoid?
Do not use cracks, pirated copies, stolen or shared Steam accounts, unauthorized activation keys, or websites that imitate a giveaway. These routes can violate copyright or platform rules, expose account credentials, and distribute malware. This article does not provide instructions for bypassing Steam authentication or digital-rights management.
