What the new Xbox Cloud Gaming UI actually is
The new interface is a browser-based Xbox Cloud Gaming preview. It is not a downloadable app, a new console-dashboard update, or a separate program that you need to install. Microsoft describes it as an opt-in public preview with updated navigation, a refreshed look, and an evolving web product flow.
Xbox later referred to the experience as an Insider public preview, but Microsoft’s published access instructions focus on the Preview Features toggle inside Xbox Cloud Gaming. Do not assume that joining a particular Xbox Insider ring guarantees access.

The preview may change during testing. Some features may be missing, behave differently, or appear at different times for different accounts and devices. The redesign also does not automatically improve streaming quality, remove queues, unlock games, or change your Game Pass entitlement.
How to enable the preview
- Use a current version of a supported browser. Xbox specifically lists Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari for browser-based cloud gaming.
- Go to https://xbox.com/play.
- Sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account you want to use for cloud gaming.
- Open Settings.
- Turn on the Preview Features toggle.
- Wait for the preview prompt or links to appear. Microsoft says this may take up to 10 minutes.
- If nothing changes, sign out of Xbox Cloud Gaming and sign back in.
- Open https://play.xbox.com directly.
Microsoft’s official announcement provides these access steps and identifies play.xbox.com as the direct preview address. The regular experience remains available at xbox.com/play.
Is early access available to everyone?
Not necessarily. The feature is described as an opt-in public preview, while a later Xbox update refers to it as an Insider preview. In practice, access may be staged rather than instantly available to every Xbox account.
You may see the Preview Features setting but still have to wait for the preview to activate. Alternatively, the setting may not be present on your account yet. Microsoft has not specified a guaranteed Insider ring, universal approval process, fixed end date, or promise that every eligible device will receive the same experience.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Joining Xbox Insider is therefore not a substitute for checking the setting at xbox.com/play. The safest expectation is that eligible accounts can opt in when Microsoft includes them in the rollout.
Where the preview works
The announcement concerns the web version of Xbox Cloud Gaming. That makes a supported browser on a Windows PC, Apple or Android phone, tablet, or another compatible device the clearest way to test it. Xbox lists Edge, Chrome, and Safari among supported browser options on its official cloud gaming requirements page.
Xbox Cloud Gaming is also available through other access methods, including the PC app, consoles, selected LG, Samsung, and VIDAA TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, handhelds, and supported Meta Quest headsets. However, the browser preview should not be assumed to replace or update the native interface on every app, TV, console, or headset.
If you want to test the redesigned web navigation specifically, use the browser route and the direct play.xbox.com address.

What you need to play games
Preview access and game access are separate. You may be able to inspect the redesigned interface without having the subscription, controller, or network conditions required to launch a particular game.
Subscription and game eligibility
For most cloud-playable games, Xbox currently requires a supported device, a compatible browser, an active Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription, and a game available for cloud streaming in your region. Games not included with your plan may need to be purchased separately.
Xbox also supports selected free-to-play cloud games, including Fortnite, with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. This exception does not make the entire cloud catalog free.
Xbox’s U.S. plan presentation checked in August 2026 listed these monthly price signals:
| Plan | U.S. price signal | Cloud-gaming position |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | $9.99/month | Lowest-cost paid option listed with cloud gaming and a smaller catalog |
| Premium | $14.99/month | Larger catalog and shorter waits than Essential, according to Xbox’s comparison |
| Ultimate | $22.99/month | Broadest benefits, highest-quality cloud streaming, and shortest waits according to Xbox’s current presentation |
Prices, catalogs, benefits, and availability vary by country and can change. Xbox announced an April 2026 U.S. pricing change that reduced Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99 per month. Check the current official Game Pass page before subscribing. Ultimate is not required merely to view the new interface.
Controller
For gameplay, Xbox says you generally need a compatible controller connected over Bluetooth or USB. Some games support Xbox touch controls, so a controller is not required for every title. If you only want to browse the preview, a controller is unnecessary.
Before buying an accessory, check whether your phone, tablet, TV, PC, or handheld supports the controller connection you plan to use. An existing Xbox controller or another reputable compatible Bluetooth controller may be sufficient.
Internet connection
Xbox recommends at least 10 Mbps download speed, while some devices may need 20 Mbps for the best quality. A 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection is recommended. Wired Ethernet can also be useful on devices that support it, especially if wireless congestion causes interruptions.

- Access your favorite entertainment through apps like YouTube, Netflix, and more
- Enjoy over 100 games right out of the box with a 1 month Xbox Game Pass trial
- Watch 4K Blu-ray movies and stream 4K video on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Microsoft Movies & TV, and more
- Play with friends and family near and farsitting together on the sofa or around the world on Xbox Live, the fastest, most reliable gaming network
- Xbox One games and accessories work together
These requirements affect game streaming, not whether the preview navigation appears. The redesigned UI cannot remove lag caused by a weak connection, crowded Wi-Fi network, unsupported device, or cloud-service queue.
If the Preview Features toggle is missing
Work through this sequence before assuming the feature has been cancelled:
- Make sure you are using the browser website at xbox.com/play, not only the Xbox PC, mobile, TV, or console app.
- Check that the correct Microsoft/Xbox account is signed in.
- Refresh the page and reopen Settings.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Wait the full 10-minute period mentioned by Microsoft.
- Try a current Edge, Chrome, or Safari session.
- Open play.xbox.com directly.
- As a practical troubleshooting step, test a private browser window after confirming that you know your sign-in details and understand its privacy implications.
- If the option remains absent, check current Xbox Insider announcements or official Xbox support channels.
The first several checks follow Microsoft’s access guidance. Browser switching, private-window testing, and verifying the account are practical troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes.
If play.xbox.com still shows the old interface
The direct URL is the official preview route, but it does not guarantee immediate eligibility. A staged rollout, stale browser session, cached account state, or temporary preview change can all affect what appears.
Refresh the page, sign out and back in, and try a supported browser. Do not use unofficial scripts, URL parameters, modified cookies, browser extensions, or “Insider unlock” services. Microsoft has not identified those as official access methods.
If the interface loads but a game will not start
- Confirm that your Game Pass plan includes the game, or that the title is a supported free-to-play cloud game.
- Check whether the game is available for cloud play rather than only console or PC installation.
- Verify regional availability.
- Pair or reconnect a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller.
- Try Edge, Chrome, or Safari on a supported device.
- Test your connection against Xbox’s 10 Mbps minimum guidance and use 5 GHz Wi-Fi where possible.
- Check for a queue, temporary service issue, or title-specific unavailability.
The preview changes the web interface; it does not bypass subscription, ownership, region, device, controller, or cloud-playability restrictions. See Xbox’s current cloud gaming requirements for the live eligibility details.
How to return to the old interface
Go back to https://xbox.com/play. Microsoft explicitly identifies that address as the route to the existing web experience. You do not need to uninstall anything or clear your entire browser profile.

While using the preview at play.xbox.com, Microsoft provides two feedback routes:

- What's in the box: Xbox Series S 512GB console, 1 Wireless Controller, High Speed HDMI cable.
- CPU: 8X Cores @ 3.6 GHz (3.4 GHz w/SMT) Custom Zen 2 CPU; GPU: 4 TFLOPS, 20 CUs @1.565 GHz Custom RDNA 2 GPU; SOC Die Size: 197.05 mm2.

- Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
- Select your profile icon in the upper-right corner and choose Give Feedback.
- Open the Xbox Web Guide by pressing the Xbox button on a controller, or selecting the Xbox icon in the upper-left corner, then choose Give Feedback.
Feedback is especially useful during a preview because Microsoft says the web platform and experience are still being refined. Include your browser, device, account region, and a clear description of what appeared or failed when reporting a problem.
What the preview changes—and what it does not
| It changes | It does not guarantee |
|---|---|
| Web navigation and visual presentation | Better streaming performance or image quality |
| The browser-based product flow | Removal of cloud queues |
| How selected web features may be organized | Access to games outside your plan, region, or ownership rights |
| The experience Microsoft is testing before broader rollout | Identical behavior in native apps, TV apps, consoles, or every device |
Microsoft may change or expand the preview. If Preview Features is unavailable, check the live Xbox Cloud Gaming page and current Xbox Insider announcements rather than relying on old screenshots or unofficial workarounds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to access the new UI?
No. The Preview Features toggle controls access to the web preview. Playing most cloud games generally requires Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate, while selected free-to-play titles may be available with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
Do I need to install a new Xbox Cloud Gaming app?
No. Microsoft’s announced preview is browser-based. Use xbox.com/play to opt in and play.xbox.com to open the preview.

The rollout may not have reached your account, or your session, browser, device, region, or signed-in account may be preventing the option from appearing. Confirm the URL and account, refresh, sign out and back in, wait up to 10 minutes, and try a current Edge, Chrome, or Safari session.
Can I go back to the old Xbox Cloud Gaming site?
Yes. Return to xbox.com/play, which Microsoft identifies as the existing web experience.
The Bottom Line
Use xbox.com/play → Settings → Preview Features, wait up to 10 minutes, then try play.xbox.com. The preview is account- and rollout-dependent, and normal Xbox Cloud Gaming subscription, game, region, device, controller, and connection rules still apply.
