To get Minecraft on Windows 11: download the official Minecraft Launcher, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game, buy the PC edition if necessary, then choose Minecraft for Windows or Minecraft: Java Edition and select Play.
The current PC purchase is Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC, which includes both editions. The launcher is free to download, but installing it alone does not give you game ownership.
What you need
- A Windows 11 PC with internet access.
- A Microsoft account.
- A Minecraft PC purchase or another currently eligible license or subscription entitlement.
- Enough storage and suitable hardware for the edition you plan to play.
Minecraft’s official download page supports Windows 10/11. The publisher lists 4 GB of memory and 4 GB of storage for Minecraft for Windows, while Java Edition lists 8 GB of memory with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics, plus 2 GB of storage. These are published requirements, not a promise of smooth performance with high render distances, shaders, large worlds, or mods. See the official PC edition requirements.
Quick installation: the official Minecraft Launcher
- Open the official Minecraft download page.
- Under the Windows option, choose the launcher download or the Microsoft Store installation route.
- Install and open Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you will use to play and purchase Minecraft.
- If the account does not own Minecraft, choose the purchase option and complete checkout.
- In the launcher, select Minecraft for Windows or Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Select Play. The launcher will download and install the selected edition.
The launcher is the central PC hub for Minecraft. You do not need two separate launchers for Java and Bedrock. Downloading the launcher from Minecraft.net or installing it through the Microsoft Store are both official routes.

How to buy Minecraft on Windows 11
For a first-time PC buyer, use the official Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition PC page or the official Xbox/Microsoft PC listing.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the game.
- Select the purchase option and complete checkout.
- Install or open Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign in to the launcher with the same Microsoft account.
- Choose Java Edition or Minecraft for Windows, then select Play.
The US Xbox listing showed $29.99+ when checked on August 18, 2026. Treat that only as a dated price signal: taxes, region, promotions, bundles, and account eligibility can change the final amount. Check the live listing before paying.
How to reinstall Minecraft on a new Windows 11 PC
If you already bought the PC bundle, you generally should not buy it again for another computer. Download the launcher, sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the purchase, find the owned game in the launcher, and select Play to install it.
If Minecraft is missing, verify the email address shown in the launcher, sign out, and sign back in. A purchase made through a different account—or an account you can no longer access—may not appear. Confirm ownership before purchasing a second copy. The current buying process uses Microsoft accounts rather than the old Mojang-account workflow; consult Minecraft’s official buying guidance.

Minecraft for Windows is the product name used for Bedrock Edition on PC. Java Edition is the PC-focused Java version. The current PC bundle gives you access to both, so the best choice depends on your friends, devices, controller, worlds, and preferred content.

Bedrock: Minecraft for Windows
- Supports Bedrock cross-play with compatible players on Windows, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and mobile.
- Has native controller and touch support.
- Includes access to the in-game Marketplace, add-ons, skin packs, worlds, and other creator content.
- Is generally presented by the publisher as the less hardware-intensive PC option.
Java Edition
- Runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with multiplayer compatibility limited to Java players.
- Has the broader established PC mod ecosystem and Java-focused community servers.
- Does not currently provide native controller support, although third-party tools may offer workarounds.
- Can require substantially more hardware with high settings, shaders, or mods.
Java and Bedrock are not interchangeable. Ordinary Java and Bedrock multiplayer sessions are not cross-compatible, and their world/save formats do not automatically work in the other edition. Choose the edition used by your friends or the one that contains your existing world.
Microsoft Store versus Minecraft.net
Microsoft Store: This is convenient if you prefer Windows’ built-in app installation and update flow. However, Store downloads can get stuck, the Store and launcher can use different Microsoft accounts, and Windows app permissions or updates can interfere.
Minecraft.net: The official download page provides a direct first-party route to the launcher and alternate downloads. It is useful when the Store is unavailable or malfunctioning, but you still need to sign in with the correct Microsoft account, and downloading the launcher does not grant ownership.
Use only Minecraft.net or Microsoft/Xbox destinations for the basic installation. Avoid unofficial “free Minecraft” installers and treat third-party launchers as an advanced Java-player choice rather than the normal beginner setup.
Fix common Windows 11 installation problems
The launcher is installed, but Minecraft is not listed
- Check the email address shown in the launcher.
- Sign out completely.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that completed the purchase.
- Check the launcher’s owned games or library.
- Do not buy another copy until account ownership is confirmed.
School, work, child, or family accounts can also lack the relevant entitlement or have restrictions applied.

The launcher will not open
- Restart Windows 11.
- Install available Windows and Microsoft Store updates.
- Reinstall the official Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign out and back in if the launcher opens but cannot authenticate.
- Check whether security software or a network policy is blocking it.
If it continues to crash or cannot authenticate, use the troubleshooting and support resources linked from the official download page. Avoid assuming that one cache-reset procedure works on every Windows 11 build.
The Microsoft Store download is stuck
Confirm that the Store and launcher use the intended Microsoft account, check for Windows updates, restart the PC, and try the Minecraft.net launcher route. If the Store itself is restricted or broken, Microsoft Store troubleshooting may be required before Minecraft can be installed through it.

The game installs but runs poorly
- Lower render distance and simulation distance.
- Reduce graphics quality and disable resource-heavy add-ons.
- For Java, test the unmodded game before adding mods or shaders.
- Compare the PC with the publisher’s listed requirements.
Bedrock may be the better starting point on a lower-powered PC, but actual performance depends on hardware, settings, world size, and content.
The player cannot join friends
- Confirm that everyone is using Java or everyone is using Bedrock.
- Check that players are signed into the expected Microsoft/Xbox accounts.
- Confirm that the platforms are compatible with the chosen edition.
- Check multiplayer permissions and child-account settings.
- Do not attempt to join a Java server from Bedrock, or a Bedrock session from Java.
Bedrock supports cross-platform play across compatible Windows, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and mobile players. Java multiplayer is for Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Java saves do not appear in Bedrock
This is expected. Java and Bedrock save formats are not automatically interchangeable. Launch the world in the edition where it was created, and make backups before attempting any third-party conversion process.

You do not need Marketplace content, Minecoins, add-ons, Realms, or server hosting to install and play ordinary single-player Minecraft. Bedrock Marketplace content can suit players who want curated worlds and add-ons. Realms can suit families or small groups wanting a managed private world, while self-managed hosting offers more control but requires edition-compatible configuration. Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
Not in ordinary cross-play sessions. Java multiplayer is separate from Bedrock cross-play, and Java and Bedrock worlds are not automatically compatible.
Which edition is best for mods?
Java Edition is usually the better choice for the established PC mod ecosystem and Java community servers. Individual mods may have separate compatibility requirements.
Which edition supports controllers?

The most common reason is that the launcher is signed into a different Microsoft account. Sign out, verify the purchase account’s email address, and sign back in before buying another copy.
