If you can hear a game on your PC but viewers cannot hear it in Discord, start by sharing the game window—not the entire desktop—and make sure application audio is enabled. If that fails, add the game manually in Discord, switch it from exclusive fullscreen to borderless or windowed mode, then check Windows per-app audio routing. These steps usually solve the problem without reinstalling Windows or adding third-party audio software.
First, identify what is actually broken
Discord game audio has three separate stages: the game must play sound locally, Discord must capture that sound, and the viewer must play the stream audio. A failure at any stage can look like “Discord has no game audio.”
| Symptom | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| You cannot hear the game locally | Windows, the game, or the selected output device |
| You hear the game, but viewers hear silence | Discord’s capture mode, permissions, detection, or fullscreen compatibility |
| Only one game is affected | That game’s display mode, launcher, anti-cheat, DRM, overlay, or audio engine |
| Every game is affected | Discord settings, Windows routing, drivers, permissions, or the client installation |
| Viewers hear Discord voice but not the game | Voice chat works; application-audio capture is the narrower failure |
| Viewers hear unrelated desktop sounds | Whole-screen sharing or an incorrect Windows output route |
Discord supports application-audio sharing from its Windows desktop client, but the result depends on the selected sharing method, the game, and your Windows audio path. Discord documents sharing either an application window or the entire screen, with behavior varying by platform and client.
Discord’s official Go Live and Screen Share guide explains the supported sharing flow and manual game detection.

The two-minute fix
- Join a Discord voice channel or call.
- Click Share Screen, or select the detected game and choose Go Live.
- Select the specific game or application window.
- Before starting, confirm the option to share application audio is enabled.
- Start the stream and ask a viewer to test the sound.
- If the game is missing, open User Settings → Game Activity → Add it, select the running game, and try again.
- Change the game’s display mode from Fullscreen Exclusive to Borderless or Windowed.
- Exit Discord completely, relaunch it with Run as administrator, and start a new stream.
Restart the stream after each major change. Testing a new stream is more useful than changing settings while an existing capture session remains active.
1. Share the game application, not just the desktop
For a normal game stream, application sharing is the best first choice. It is designed to capture the selected game rather than everything playing through your desktop.
Application sharing can prevent unrelated audio from reaching viewers, including browser videos, music, notification sounds, voice-chat feedback, and system alerts. It also makes it easier to identify whether Discord can capture that particular game.
Open the voice channel or call, select Share Screen, choose the game’s window, check the audio-sharing control, and start streaming. The exact labels can differ between Discord releases, browser Discord, and regional client variants.

Older instructions mention that setting, but current official Discord documentation does not establish that it remains available in every current client.
2. Add the game manually in Game Activity
If Discord does not show the game as an available Go Live application, add it manually:
- Open User Settings in Discord.
- Select Game Activity.
- Click Add it.
- Choose the running game from the list.
- Return to the call and start Go Live again.
This helps when the game was launched through an unusual launcher, Discord started before the game, the launcher and game use separate executables, or the title is running with elevated permissions. Adding a game improves detection; it does not override a game that blocks or interferes with capture.
3. Change exclusive fullscreen to borderless
Exclusive fullscreen is one of the most important causes of failed application capture. Discord’s Windows capture documentation notes that Windows Graphics Capture may not work correctly with full-screen exclusive games and recommends borderless mode for better screen-sharing compatibility.

Discord’s Windows application-capture documentation describes the capture methods and the limitation involving full-screen exclusive games.
To test it:
- Open the game’s graphics or display settings.
- Set Display Mode to Borderless, Borderless Windowed, or Windowed.
- Apply the change.
- Stop the Discord stream completely.
- Start a new stream and re-select the game window.
Borderless mode may have different latency, frame-pacing, or performance characteristics from exclusive fullscreen, but it is generally the most practical compatibility test. If the game has no borderless option, third-party borderless-window utilities may exist, but they should not be the default fix because compatibility and safety vary.
4. Run Discord as administrator
If the game runs as administrator while Discord does not, Windows permission boundaries can interfere with game detection or capture. Discord’s Windows troubleshooting guide recommends testing Discord with administrator privileges.
- Exit Discord completely, including its notification-area process.
- Right-click the Discord shortcut.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Start the game.
- Try application sharing again.
This is a troubleshooting test, not a universal requirement. Giving Discord elevated privileges is not always necessary, so do not assume it must remain permanently elevated once capture works.

5. Check Windows 11 Volume mixer and output routing
Windows can assign different volume levels and output devices to individual applications. A game may be audible through a headset, monitor, USB DAC, Bluetooth device, HDMI output, virtual mixer, or capture device while Discord is not receiving the expected application stream.
- Open Settings → System → Sound.
- Open Volume mixer.
- Find the game and Discord.
- Confirm neither application is muted and that their volume levels are raised.
- Check the game’s selected output device.
- Temporarily set the game to the same ordinary output device used by desktop audio.
- Restart the game after changing the device.
Microsoft identifies per-app volume, per-app output selection, audio services, and audio drivers as possible causes when some applications have sound while others do not. The same controls may appear as App volume and device preferences on older Windows versions.
Microsoft’s app-audio troubleshooting guide covers these routing and driver checks.
For diagnosis, temporarily test with a conventional wired headset or the default Windows playback device if you use Bluetooth, HDMI, a virtual cable, a capture card, or audio-routing software. These devices are not automatically faulty, but they add more places for the signal to be redirected.
6. Switch Discord’s Audio Subsystem
Discord’s Standard and Legacy audio subsystems are useful compatibility tests. Neither is universally better.
- Open User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Scroll to Audio Subsystem.
- Test Standard.
- Restart Discord and test the stream.
- If there is no improvement, choose Legacy.
- Restart Discord again and test once more.
Changing the subsystem can affect voice quality or other Discord audio behavior, so change only one option at a time. If the issue affects multiple games, use Reset Voice and Video Settings in Discord’s debugging area, restart the client, and retest.
7. Disable hardware acceleration as a capture test
Hardware acceleration can contribute to certain screen-sharing or video-capture problems. Discord includes disabling it among its troubleshooting steps for relevant streaming issues.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Open the Video section.
- Find Hardware Acceleration.
- Disable it.
- Restart Discord.
- Test a new game stream.
This is a test, not a guaranteed audio repair. Disabling hardware acceleration can change rendering efficiency and performance, so restore it if it makes no difference.
Relevant guidance is available in Discord’s Voice, Video, and Streaming Guide.
8. Try sharing the entire screen
Whole-screen sharing is a useful diagnostic fallback. Stop the stream, choose the entire display, enable audio sharing if Discord presents that option, and ask a viewer whether the game can now be heard.
If whole-screen sharing works while application sharing does not, the problem is probably tied to Discord’s application-capture path, the game’s rendering mode, or the way the game is detected. It does not prove that the game itself is defective.

Whole-screen sharing is not always the best permanent solution. It may expose private desktop content and transmit browser audio, music, notifications, system sounds, or duplicate voice audio. Check what is visible before using it publicly.
9. Check permissions and security software
Discord says screen-sharing failures can involve missing system permissions, operating-system issues, drivers, and security software. Check the following:
- Windows privacy settings related to screen capture.
- Whether antivirus or endpoint-security software is blocking Discord.
- Whether a firewall is preventing Discord from connecting correctly.
- Whether overlays, recording tools, or capture utilities are interfering.
- Whether the game’s anti-cheat or DRM system restricts capture.
Do not assume a particular antivirus or anti-cheat product is responsible without testing that product and version. If you temporarily disable a security feature for diagnosis, do so only briefly and restore it immediately after the test.
10. Update Discord, Windows, and audio drivers
Before considering a reinstall, update the software involved in the capture chain:

- Install pending Windows updates.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Update the relevant audio device driver.
- Restart Windows.
- Test with one game before changing more settings.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Current troubleshooting should prioritize a supported Windows release rather than treating Windows 10 as an equally maintained platform.
11. Test Discord in Chrome
Discord identifies Chrome as a browser option for application-sound sharing. A Chrome test can isolate whether the desktop client is the problem.
- Chrome works, desktop Discord fails: investigate the desktop client, its settings, permissions, or installation.
- Neither works: investigate Windows routing, the game, permissions, drivers, or the output device.
- Chrome behaves differently: remember that browser permissions and capture support are not identical to the desktop client.
Discord’s platform guidance is documented in its desktop and mobile streaming guide. Do not assume every browser exposes the same capture features; Chrome is the browser specifically named in that guidance for application-sound sharing.
If only one game has the problem
A game-specific failure usually points away from your microphone and toward capture compatibility. Check, in this order:
- Change that game to borderless or windowed mode.
- Launch the game before opening Discord, then add it manually under Game Activity.
- Test without overlays or recording tools.
- Check whether the launcher and the actual game use different processes.
- Test Discord as administrator if the game is elevated.
- Try whole-screen sharing to distinguish application-capture failure from general audio failure.
Anti-cheat, DRM, custom audio engines, unusual launchers, and overlays can make one title behave differently from another. They are possible explanations, not universal proof that capture is blocked.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If every game fails
When all games are silent for viewers, focus on the shared parts of the capture chain:
- Confirm application audio is enabled in a newly created stream.
- Check Windows Volume mixer and the game’s output device.
- Switch Discord between Standard and Legacy audio subsystems.
- Reset Voice and Video settings.
- Test Discord as administrator.
- Disable hardware acceleration and restart Discord.
- Update Discord, Windows, and audio drivers.
- Compare the desktop client with Discord in Chrome.
Microphone sensitivity, microphone selection, and headset microphone settings normally do not restore missing game audio. Those controls affect voice input, not the game’s application-audio capture path.
Ask the viewer to check playback
Before changing more streamer settings, have the viewer verify:

If one viewer hears the game and another does not, the capture may already be working and the remaining problem is viewer playback.
Advanced alternatives: OBS and virtual audio routing
OBS, Voicemeeter, virtual cables, and capture-card routing can help advanced users who need separate game, microphone, music, and chat mixes, audio filters, or broadcast-style control.
They are not the right first fix for a single missing game-audio stream. They add virtual devices, routing rules, monitoring choices, and more failure points. Use them when you need a deliberate multi-source mix—not simply because Discord application sharing has not yet been tested in borderless mode.
When to contact Discord Support
If the problem survives the troubleshooting ladder, collect evidence before opening a ticket. Discord’s troubleshooting guidance recommends including:
- Windows version and whether you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Discord client type and version.
- The affected game and how it was launched.
- Your headset, speakers, DAC, Bluetooth device, HDMI output, or virtual audio devices.
- The sharing method: application window or entire screen.
- Whether viewers hear voice chat, unrelated desktop audio, or complete silence.
- Screenshots of the relevant Voice & Video settings.
- A debug log from Discord’s Voice & Video debugging area.
Include which tests changed the result—for example, “whole-screen sharing works, application sharing does not” or “Chrome works, the desktop client does not.” That distinction gives support a useful starting point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I hear the game but my friends cannot?
Local playback only proves that Windows and the game are producing sound. Discord still has to capture the application stream and send it to viewers. Re-select the game in Share Screen, enable application audio, and test borderless mode.
Does Discord capture audio from full-screen games?
It can, but exclusive fullscreen can interfere with Discord’s Windows application-capture path. Borderless fullscreen or windowed mode is the recommended compatibility test.
Should I share the whole screen?
Use whole-screen sharing as a diagnostic fallback or when application capture fails. It may also share notifications, browser audio, private content, or duplicate voice audio.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Discord Nitro fix missing game audio?
Nitro may provide stream-quality features, but it is not a general fix for application-audio capture, Windows routing, permissions, or game compatibility.
Why does Chrome work when the Discord app does not?
The browser and desktop client use different capture environments and permissions. If Chrome works, the issue is more likely specific to the desktop client or its configuration.
Why does only one game have the problem?
That game may be using exclusive fullscreen, an unusual launcher process, overlays, anti-cheat, DRM, or a custom audio engine that affects capture. Test borderless mode, manual game detection, and whole-screen sharing.
The Bottom Line
Use this order: share the specific game with application audio enabled, add it manually, switch to borderless mode, test Discord as administrator, check Windows Volume mixer, then try Discord’s audio subsystem, reset settings, hardware-acceleration changes, Chrome, and finally support escalation. Reinstalling Discord or adding a virtual mixer should be a later step, not the starting point.
