Verdict: The reviewed HP Victus 16 configuration is a strong 1080p gaming laptop with an RTX 4060, a powerful Core i7-14700HX processor, unusually good web-browsing battery life, and accessible RAM and storage upgrades. Its biggest weaknesses are the tested 144Hz display’s poor color coverage and slow response time, plastic construction, loud fans under load, and missing Thunderbolt 4, USB4, and SD-card reader.
Buy it when the exact SKU offers the RTX 4060 at a convincing midrange price and you mainly play at 1080p. Avoid the lowest-end FHD panel—or plan to use an external monitor—if motion clarity, color accuracy, or competitive gaming matters.
The configuration matters more than the name
“HP Victus 16 (2024)” describes a product family, not one universal laptop. Depending on the region and listing, the family includes Intel and AMD processors, RTX 3050, RTX 4050, RTX 4060, and RTX 4070 graphics, plus 144Hz FHD, 165Hz FHD, and 240Hz QHD displays. Results from one model should not be applied automatically to another. RTINGS’ review of the wider 2024 family documents these configuration differences.
This review focuses on the Intel model tested by Notebookcheck:

The primary measurements and benchmarks below come from Notebookcheck’s review of this specific i7-14700HX/RTX 4060 unit. The review was published in May 2024 and updated in February 2026; its historical price figures should not be treated as current 2026 pricing.
Gaming performance: a capable 1080p RTX 4060 machine
The RTX 4060 configuration is best understood as a high-settings 1080p gaming laptop. It can handle demanding AAA games well, while esports titles can reach or exceed the 144Hz panel’s nominal refresh rate. However, performance depends on the game, graphics preset, cooling, memory configuration, firmware, power limit, and performance mode.
| Game and settings | Test result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| The Witcher 3, 1080p Ultra | About 110fps | Strong performance in a demanding game |
| Final Fantasy XV, 1080p High | About 98fps | Appropriate for high-refresh FHD gaming |
| Dota 2, 1080p Ultra | About 157fps | Enough frame rate to exploit a 144Hz panel, subject to ghosting |
| EA Sports WRC, 1080p Ultra | About 80fps | Heavy modern games may need settings adjustments |
These are results from the tested system, not guaranteed figures for every Victus 16 SKU. A lower-power RTX 4060, single-channel memory, different cooling design, or a different CPU can change the result.
The laptop also supports Nvidia features such as DLSS and frame generation in compatible games. They can substantially improve perceived performance, especially in demanding titles, but they should supplement solid native performance rather than conceal an unsuitable configuration. The RTX 4060’s 8GB of VRAM is reasonable for the intended 1080p target, though less future-proof for very high-resolution textures, ray tracing, and newer games than GPUs with more memory.

What the Core i7-14700HX adds
The Core i7-14700HX is considerably more processor than ordinary gaming needs require. It is useful for CPU-heavy games, compiling, rendering, video work, virtual machines, and heavy multitasking. The trade-off is higher power and thermal demand than an efficient H- or HS-series chip. An AMD Ryzen Victus with the same RTX 4060 may offer a different balance of battery life, heat, and sustained performance; do not assume this Intel review describes it.
The display is the main reason to inspect the SKU carefully
The tested 144Hz FHD IPS panel is functional but disappointing. Notebookcheck measured approximately:
- 288cd/m2 average brightness
- 1511:1 contrast
- 61.7% sRGB coverage
- 42.7% AdobeRGB coverage
- 41.3% Display P3 coverage
- 28.6ms gray-to-gray response time
- No detected PWM flicker in the tested unit
For indoor gaming, documents, browsing, and streaming, the brightness and contrast are acceptable. The limited gamut makes colors look less rich than on a properly covered sRGB panel and makes this screen a poor choice for serious photo or video work.
The more important gaming problem is the response time. A 144Hz refresh rate does not guarantee clear motion: the measured response time is slow enough to produce visible ghosting during fast camera pans and competitive play. RTINGS also reports that the 2024 Victus displays lack variable refresh rate support. Check the exact panel rather than judging it by “144Hz” alone.
Rank #2
- 【RAM & Storage】This computer comes with 16GB RAM DDR5 | 512GB SSD
- 【AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS Processor】It is a mid-range CPU for gaming laptops that features 8 Zen 3+ cores and no iGPU.This 16-thread Rembrandt Refresh family processor runs at 3.1 GHz to 4.5 GHz.
- 【15.6-inch FHD display with 144 Hz refresh rate】1920 x 1080 resolution draws you into crisp gameplay. Never miss a cutscene again with the 144Hz refresh rate that reduces frustrating lag and image ghosting. AMD FreeSync Premium technology delivers smooth gameplay with a high refresh rate, low framerate compensation, and low latency. IPS (in-plane switching), micro-edge, anti-glare display in sRGB color space.
- 【Other features】NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050,Front-Facing Camera,Built-In Microphone,DTS: X Ultra Technology,AI Noise reduction, Windows 11 Home OS.
- 【Bundle with mouse pad】Bundled with Mouse Pad featuring high-quality cloth surface promotes smooth mouse gliding and enhanced precision.
If you play competitive shooters, edit visual media, or care about image quality, prioritize a better-specified FHD or QHD panel—or budget for a high-refresh external gaming monitor with fast measured response, VRR, and strong sRGB coverage. An external display is also the most practical way to turn the Victus’s good GPU into a better desktop gaming setup.
Battery life is unusually good for a gaming laptop
The 83Wh battery is one of this configuration’s strongest features. Notebookcheck measured approximately 8.5 hours of Wi-Fi web use, while RTINGS measured around six hours of video playback on its tested 2024 configuration. The different results reflect different hardware and test methods rather than a contradiction.
That makes the Victus unusually practical for classes, documents, browsing, and streaming away from an outlet. It does not make the laptop an all-day gaming system. Gaming on battery is dramatically shorter and normally reduces performance. Brightness, Windows power mode, refresh rate, background programs, hybrid-graphics behavior, CPU choice, and panel type all affect endurance.
USB-C charging is useful, but limited
The reviewed unit supports USB-C Power Delivery and can charge from a 100W USB-C power supply. That is convenient for travel and light work, but it is not a replacement for the bundled high-power adapter during gaming. A 100W charger cannot provide the same sustained power as the dedicated adapter, so expect reduced performance or battery drain under demanding loads.
Build, keyboard, webcam, and portability
The Victus uses an understated design rather than aggressive gaming styling. RTINGS considers the build good for its budget class and reports a comfortable keyboard and responsive touchpad. The FHD webcam has a privacy cover, which is useful for students and hybrid workers.
It is not a premium chassis. The construction is entirely plastic, and Notebookcheck found that the lid and base could be twisted. At roughly 2.367kg before adding the large power brick, it is portable only in the gaming-laptop sense. It will fit in a suitable backpack, but it is not a comfortable daily carry compared with a thin productivity laptop.
Thermals and fan noise
The cooling system keeps performance relatively stable, with RTINGS finding minimal thermal throttling, but sustained gaming is loud. Notebookcheck measured up to approximately 48dB(A) under full load in Balanced mode, with Performance mode louder. Eco mode is considerably quieter.
Fans can remain stopped during light work if the BIOS “fan always on” option is disabled; Notebookcheck reports that this setting was enabled by default on the tested unit. Under sustained gaming, however, headphones or external speakers are sensible. The practical trade-off is straightforward: quiet everyday use is possible, but high-performance gaming comes with audible fan noise.

Ports, wireless, and missing features
The tested model includes three USB-A ports, one USB-C port with Power Delivery and DisplayPort output, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, and a headset combo jack. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3.
It does not include Thunderbolt 4, USB4, or an SD-card reader. Notebookcheck also found the Realtek Wi-Fi 6 implementation slower than competing Intel wireless solutions in its testing. That may not matter on a fast wired connection, but it is worth considering for large downloads, network storage, or crowded wireless environments.
Upgradeability: a meaningful advantage
The reviewed configuration provides accessible internal hardware after removing the bottom cover. RAM is replaceable or expandable, and Notebookcheck lists two PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD slots among the laptop’s strengths. Confirm these details for the exact regional SKU before buying because internal components, suppliers, mounting hardware, and service policies can vary.
Storage is the first likely upgrade. The tested 512GB drive left approximately 415GB free before the user’s own applications and games. Windows plus a few modern games can consume that space quickly. Prefer a 1TB configuration when the price difference is reasonable, or budget for a compatible PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD after checking the second-slot hardware and warranty implications.
Recommended Free Tools
Sixteen gigabytes of RAM remains serviceable for gaming, but 32GB is a better target for newer games, content creation, and multitasking. Before buying a DDR5 laptop memory upgrade, check whether the system has one or two populated modules and verify the supported speed and module type.
Which Victus 16 configuration should you buy?
- Start with the GPU: choose the RTX 4060 for demanding modern games. RTX 4050 models are a different performance tier, while RTX 4070 models may be worthwhile only when their price premium is sensible.
- Choose at least 16GB RAM: prefer 32GB if you regularly multitask, create content, or want more headroom.
- Prefer 1TB storage: 512GB is acceptable only if you are prepared to add a second SSD.
- Identify the exact display: verify resolution, refresh rate, brightness, response behavior, gamut, and VRR support. Do not assume every 144Hz panel is equivalent.
- Compare CPU priorities: choose the Intel HX model for demanding processor-heavy work; consider Ryzen-based versions when efficiency, heat, and battery balance matter more.
- Check GPU power: laptop RTX 4060 performance varies with wattage and cooling. Compare tests taken under similar conditions.
- Verify service details: confirm RAM and second M.2 access, included charger, warranty, and return policy.
Manufacturers can use different suppliers for panels, memory, and storage while retaining similar headline specifications. The model number and full retailer specification are therefore more valuable than the generic product name.

The Lenovo LOQ 15, Acer Nitro V 16, MSI Katana A15 AI, ASUS TUF Gaming A16, and HP Omen 16 are relevant alternatives, but none should be selected solely by comparing RTX labels. RTINGS’ comparison coverage places the Victus family favorably for general user experience while highlighting its display and VRR limitations.
- Lenovo LOQ 15: a direct budget-gaming rival. Compare panel quality, GPU power, battery, hinge and chassis reports, and upgrade access.
- Acer Nitro V 16: worth investigating when a 16:10 panel or VRR is more important than the Victus’s overall user experience. Verify the exact display, GPU power, webcam, and fan behavior.
- MSI Katana A15 AI: similar budget performance positioning. Pay particular attention to build quality, screen response, battery, and GPU wattage.
- ASUS TUF Gaming A16: a stronger candidate when chassis durability, battery balance, or display format outweigh Nvidia-specific features.
- HP Omen 16: consider it if you can spend more for HP’s more premium gaming line. Compare the price premium with the actual CPU, GPU, cooling, and display.

Final buying advice
The HP Victus 16 (2024) RTX 4060 configuration is a good performance-and-practicality laptop, not a premium gaming machine. Its combination of strong 1080p performance, long web runtime, a powerful processor, and upgradeable internals is compelling. The tested screen is the major compromise, and the plastic chassis, loud load fans, missing ports, and limited 512GB storage reinforce its budget positioning.
It is an excellent buy at a substantial discount, and a reasonable midrange purchase when the display and storage are acceptable. It becomes poor value when priced near newer RTX 4070 laptops or better-screened RTX 4060 competitors. Because pricing and availability change by region and date, do not rely on the historical approximately US$1,333–US$1,600 figures from the review. Check the exact CPU, GPU, panel, RAM, SSD, warranty, and return terms on the day you buy.
