The higher recommended prices for the PS5 with disc drive, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal took effect on April 2, 2026. Reported Canadian prices now range from $749.99 CAD for the PS5 Digital Edition to $1,099.99 CAD for the PS5 Pro, before applicable sales tax.
Sony announced the global increase on March 27, citing “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” Its announcement listed prices for several major markets but did not include a Canadian price table; the Canadian figures below were reported by iPhone in Canada.
New PS5 prices in Canada
The following are the reported Canadian recommended retail prices after the April 2 increase. They are before provincial and other applicable sales taxes, and a retailer’s live price may differ because of promotions, bundles, clearance stock or marketplace listings.

What Sony announced
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a global recommended-retail-price increase for four products:
- PS5 with disc drive
- PS5 Digital Edition
- PS5 Pro
- PlayStation Portal remote player
The announcement was published on March 27, 2026, with the new prices taking effect on April 2, 2026. Sony said the decision was necessary because of “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” and to allow the company to continue delivering its products and services. Sony’s English announcement prominently provided new prices for the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Japan. It directed customers in other territories to local retailers or regional PlayStation storefronts instead of publishing a Canadian table. For context only, Sony listed new U.S. prices of $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, $899.99 for PS5 Pro and $249.99 for Portal. Those U.S. prices should not be converted into Canadian prices; the Canadian figures are reported separately in CAD.
What the increase means for each PS5 model
PS5 with disc drive: $819.99 CAD
The standard disc-drive PS5 supports physical PS5 and PS4 game discs as well as digital downloads. It is the more flexible choice if you buy used games, shop physical sales, borrow games, resell discs or already own a physical PS4 library. The disc model can cost more initially, but physical games may sometimes be cheaper than digital-store purchases over the console’s lifetime.

At the reported new prices, the disc PS5 costs only $70 more than the Digital Edition. That relatively small gap makes the disc model worth considering even if you currently buy mostly digital games—especially if you want to preserve the option of buying physical media later.
PS5 Digital Edition: $749.99 CAD
The Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive. Games are purchased digitally, downloaded or accessed through supported services, so it is best suited to buyers who are already committed to an all-digital library and do not own physical PS4 or PS5 discs.
The lower upfront price is its main advantage, but the long-term trade-off is dependence on PlayStation Store pricing and digital availability. If you later change your mind, factor in the cost of a compatible separately purchased disc drive. Check the specific console revision and package details before buying; Sony’s Canadian PS5 product page lists the removable drive and other accessories separately.

- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.

PS5 Pro: $1,099.99 CAD
Sony Canada lists the PS5 Pro as a 2TB console designed for higher visual quality, advanced ray tracing, improved image clarity and higher frame rates in games that support PS5 Pro enhancements.
Recommended Free Tools
The important qualification is that the benefit is game-dependent. Not every title receives the same enhancement, and the improvement may be less noticeable on a basic 1080p television than on a high-end 4K display. The Pro is most defensible for enthusiasts who care about image quality and frame-rate compromises, are buying a new console and play supported games.
The standard PS5 is likely better value for casual players, 1080p-TV owners, budget-conscious buyers and existing PS5 owners who are satisfied with current performance. Also check the box contents carefully: the PS5 Pro price does not automatically include a disc drive or vertical stand unless a particular bundle says so.
Is PlayStation Portal a standalone console?
No. PlayStation Portal is primarily a remote player, not an independent handheld console. In normal Remote Play use, it streams compatible games installed on your paired PS5 over Wi-Fi. It can play compatible PS5 and PS4 games installed on that PS5 while the television is being used by someone else.
Sony also supports cloud streaming for selected games through PlayStation Plus Premium, subject to compatible games, account requirements, supported regions and network conditions. That feature expands Portal’s usefulness, but it does not turn the device into a handheld that locally installs and runs the entire PlayStation library. See Sony’s PlayStation Portal Canada page for current compatibility and service details.

- A PS5 and PlayStation account.
- Compatible games installed on the paired PS5.
- A reliable Wi-Fi or broadband connection.
Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband Wi-Fi requirement and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Actual performance varies with network congestion, latency, Wi-Fi quality and the game. Portal is a good fit for a household with an occupied television or for owners who want a dedicated remote-play screen. It is a poor fit if you want offline play, local game installation or an independent console without buying a PS5.
Are PlayStation accessories also more expensive?
The cited Sony announcement specifically names the PS5 consoles and PlayStation Portal. It does not provide a complete Canadian price list for DualSense controllers, disc drives, vertical stands, Pulse headsets, PlayStation VR2, console covers or other accessories.

Do not assume every PlayStation accessory rose by the same amount. Sony’s Canadian PS5 page identifies the removable disc drive and vertical stand as separate accessories, so their costs should be added only when discussing a particular configuration or bundle.

- Compare the retailer price with the reported MSRP. A console below $819.99 or $749.99 does not necessarily mean Sony reversed the increase.
- Check whether the item is new, refurbished, open-box or marketplace-sold. These categories can have different warranties, return rules and included accessories.
- Compare bundles, not just standalone consoles. A game or accessory bundle may provide better value than a discounted bare console, depending on what you would buy anyway.
- Verify the exact model and package contents. This matters particularly for the PS5 Pro and Digital Edition, where a disc drive or vertical stand may be separate.
- Review warranty and return policies. A lower price is less attractive if the seller’s support or return terms are unclear.
- Use authorized retailers or Sony’s Canadian storefront as reference points. Start with the official PlayStation Canada PS5 buy page, then compare live retailer listings.
Retailers may sell older inventory at the former price, apply a temporary promotion, delay a price change or raise a price before the formal effective date. Treat the Sony figures as recommended retail prices rather than a guarantee that every Canadian listing will match them.

| Buyer profile | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Physical-game buyer | PS5 with disc drive | Supports used games, physical sales, borrowing and resale. |
| All-digital buyer | PS5 Digital Edition | Lower initial price and smaller footprint, provided you accept digital-only purchasing. |
| Visual-quality enthusiast | PS5 Pro | 2TB storage and stronger graphics potential in supported games, especially with a capable 4K display. |
| Existing PS5 owner with TV conflicts | PlayStation Portal | Dedicated Remote Play device, provided your network is reliable. |
Used or refurbished PS5 hardware can also reduce the upfront cost, but check controller condition, warranty coverage, return rights and whether the listing is genuinely refurbished. A gaming PC offers broader software flexibility but is a different, generally more expensive purchase at comparable performance. Other handhelds may be better for native portable gaming; Portal is specifically built around PS5 Remote Play and supported cloud streaming.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Sony really raise PS5 prices in Canada?
Yes. Sony announced a global recommended-retail-price increase on March 27, 2026, and the change took effect on April 2, 2026. The Canadian prices were reported separately because Sony’s English announcement did not include a Canadian price table.
What is the cheapest new PS5 in Canada after the increase?
The reported cheapest new model is the PS5 Digital Edition at $749.99 CAD before applicable sales tax. It has no built-in disc drive.
Does the PS5 Pro include a disc drive?
Do not assume it does. Check the specific package contents. Sony lists a removable disc drive and vertical stand separately on its Canadian PS5 page unless a bundle explicitly includes them.
Can PlayStation Portal work without a PS5?
Normal Remote Play requires a PS5 and PlayStation account. Supported cloud streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium can expand Portal’s use case, but it is limited by compatible games, subscription and account requirements, regional availability and network quality.
The Bottom Line
For most Canadian buyers, the disc PS5 is the more flexible long-term purchase because it is only $70 above the Digital Edition and supports physical games. Choose the Digital Edition if you are firmly all-digital, the PS5 Pro if you have a high-end display and value supported visual upgrades, and Portal only if you already own a PS5 and have a strong Remote Play or supported cloud-streaming use case.
