Xbox sign-in failures can be caused by an Xbox Network outage, but a login error does not prove that Xbox Live is down. Check Microsoft’s official Xbox Live Status page first. If Microsoft lists an incident affecting accounts or core services, waiting is usually safer than resetting your console. If services are operational, use the decision tree below to identify an account, network, console, app, or game-specific problem.
Status last checked: September 4, 2026, UTC. The live Xbox status page must be checked immediately before relying on its current result; this article does not declare an active outage without Microsoft’s own status listing.
Check Xbox’s official status first
Open support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-live-status and look for incidents in the service categories most relevant to signing in:
- Account & Profile — authentication, profiles, and account access.
- Xbox Live Core Services — fundamental Xbox Network functions.
- Store & Subscriptions — purchases, subscriptions, and license-related access.
- Games & Gaming — game launching, multiplayer, and related services.
- Apps & Mobile — the Xbox mobile or companion experience.
The page may show some services as operational while another feature is failing. A sign-in problem can also be regional, limited to one device, or connected to a game or app rather than the whole Xbox Network. Because the status page is JavaScript-driven, search results may not accurately reflect its live state.

You can also check Downdetector’s Xbox Network page for a sudden rise in user reports. Treat it as corroboration only: Downdetector reflects reports from users, which can be delayed, regionally skewed, or inflated by unrelated local problems. Microsoft’s status page takes precedence.
How to tell whether this is a real outage
An outage becomes more likely when several independent signs line up:
- Multiple people cannot sign in at the same time.
- Microsoft lists an incident affecting Account & Profile, Core Services, Games & Gaming, or the Store.
- The same failure occurs on more than one device or network.
- Games requiring profile access, multiplayer, cloud saves, license checks, or online services fail together.
- Repeated local restarts do not change the result.
Still, a browser sign-in can work while console services are unavailable, or a console can fail while the Microsoft account works normally online. Neither result alone proves or disproves an Xbox outage.

If Xbox services are down
Do not factory-reset the console, delete saved data, repeatedly remove your profile, or buy a game or subscription to test the connection. Those actions cannot repair Microsoft’s service infrastructure and may create unnecessary recovery or data-loss work.
Microsoft may update an incident from investigating to mitigated or resolved. “Mitigated” does not guarantee that every user recovers instantly; cached sessions, local network faults, and account-specific problems can remain after the platform incident ends. Recheck the official status page later and follow any Xbox Support update.
A major incident reported on July 27, 2026 affected sign-in, game-library access, game launching, and purchases. Xbox later said the issue had been mitigated at approximately 6:48 p.m. Eastern Time. That historical incident should not be treated as proof that Xbox is down now. User discussions from August 5 indicated the incident had been resolved, although those reports are anecdotal rather than an official incident report. If Microsoft says services are operational
Work through these steps in order. Stop when access returns.
1. Test the Xbox network connection
On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, open Settings → General → Network settings and run the available network-test options. Note whether the console reports an internet-connection failure, Xbox Network service failure, NAT problem, DNS issue, or other configuration error. Menu labels can vary with console software; use the current options shown on your system.

Use the console’s normal restart command first. If it is frozen or repeatedly returns to the sign-in screen, hold the console’s power button until it shuts down, unplug it briefly, reconnect power, and start it again. A power cycle can clear a stalled local session, but it will not fix a confirmed server outage.
3. Restart the modem and router
Restart the network equipment, then test another device on the same connection. If possible, compare the Xbox over Ethernet or a mobile hotspot. A hotspot is useful for diagnosis, but mobile-data charges, signal quality, and download limits make it unsuitable as a default replacement for home internet.
Do not change DNS, UPnP, or other advanced router settings unless the network test points to that type of problem. Changing DNS is sometimes useful for a local name-resolution failure, but it is not a general Xbox-outage fix.
4. Try the Microsoft account in a browser
Sign in to the Microsoft account through a browser. If browser sign-in works but the Xbox does not, the problem is more likely local to the console, network, or Xbox app. If browser sign-in fails too, check the password, two-step verification, recovery options, and any security prompt. Do not repeatedly guess passwords; that can trigger additional security restrictions.

5. Test another account or device
If another Xbox account can sign in on the same console, the original profile or account is more likely to be the problem. If the same account works on another device, focus on the affected console or app. Compare results across devices and networks before making destructive changes.
6. Remove and re-add the profile only if necessary
Removing and re-adding an account can clear a corrupted local sign-in state, but it should be a later step—not the first response to an outage. Before removing the profile, make sure you know the Microsoft account email address, password, and verification method. The exact current menu path can vary by console software, so follow the account-management options shown in the live Xbox interface.
This does not delete cloud-owned games, but it also does not repair an Xbox Network incident. Do not delete saved games or factory-reset the console as routine sign-in troubleshooting.
7. Update or repair the Xbox app on Windows
If the failure occurs only in the Xbox app on PC, update the Xbox app and Windows, then restart the computer. The problem may involve the app, Windows Gaming Services, Microsoft Store, or the game rather than Xbox Network. Reinstall or repair components only after checking the current guidance in the Xbox Support hub; Windows-specific fixes do not automatically apply to consoles.

Record the entire error code exactly as displayed, including letters, numbers, and punctuation. Search it using Microsoft’s Xbox error-code guide. Error codes can point to network connectivity, console updates, authentication, store and licensing, or game-installation problems. The words “can’t sign in” alone are not enough to identify the cause.
What can you play during an Xbox outage?
Offline access depends on the game, console, ownership method, Home Xbox configuration, and whether the title requires online services. Do not assume every installed game will launch.

- Disc games: A disc may allow offline ownership verification, but the game may still need initial installation, updates, or online-only features. A disc does not guarantee that every mode works offline.
- Digital games: License validation may be required unless the console is configured as the purchasing account’s Home Xbox and the title supports offline use.
- Game Pass titles: Subscription and license checks may affect access, especially when the title or console has not been configured for offline use.
- Online features: Multiplayer, cloud gaming, cloud saves, achievements, social features, purchases, and some single-player games can be unavailable even when the game is installed.

Xbox 360
Xbox 360 sign-in behavior and account-security requirements differ from newer Xbox consoles. A Microsoft-account password change, two-step verification, or app-password requirement can affect 360 sign-in. A current Xbox Network incident can affect Xbox 360, but a 360-only failure may be platform-specific. Do not assume Xbox One or Series X|S instructions apply unchanged; use current Microsoft guidance for Xbox 360 authentication.

If the password was recently changed, the console may retain an old credential or request verification again. Complete the security challenge through Microsoft’s account flow. If verification cannot be completed, use account recovery or support rather than repeatedly attempting sign-in.
Account lock, suspension, or enforcement
An account-specific message, security lock, or enforcement notice is not evidence of an Xbox Network outage. Follow the instructions in the notice and use Microsoft/Xbox account support. A status page showing operational services cannot establish that an individual account is unrestricted.
One-game-only failures
If the Xbox account works and only one title fails, check that game’s server status, update state, installation, and publisher support. A game-server outage can occur while Xbox Network services are healthy.

- You cannot complete two-step verification or recovery.
- The account appears locked, suspended, or restricted.
- Microsoft’s status page shows no incident, but the same account still fails after network and console checks.
- The exact error code points to account, licensing, update, or installation support.
Before contacting support, preserve the complete error code, console model, region, time the problem began, browser-sign-in result, network-test result, and whether other accounts or devices are affected. These details help distinguish a platform incident from a local or account-specific failure.
Quick decision tree
- Official status lists an incident? Wait, monitor Microsoft’s updates, and avoid destructive resets.
- No incident, but several devices and networks fail? Check for a regional or newly emerging incident and use Downdetector only as corroboration.
- Browser account sign-in fails? Use account recovery or support.
- Browser sign-in works, but one console fails? Test the network, restart the console and router, then consider re-adding the profile.
- Only the Xbox app fails? Update Windows and the app, then follow current PC-specific support guidance.
- Only one game fails? Investigate that game’s servers or installation rather than assuming Xbox Network is down.
