The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X launched on October 16, 2025. They are no longer upcoming products: ASUS and Xbox made the Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs available worldwide across 45 countries, with additional markets expected to follow. In the U.S., ASUS lists the ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99 and the ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99.
The key point is that these are not standalone Xbox consoles. ASUS manufactures the handhelds in collaboration with Xbox, combining Windows PC gaming with an Xbox-focused interface, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Remote Play.
When did the ROG Xbox Ally launch?
Microsoft and ASUS revealed the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8, 2025. At first, the companies described the launch only as a holiday 2025 release for select markets.
ASUS later confirmed the retail launch date as October 16, 2025. The products became available worldwide across 45 countries on that date, although availability and stock were not necessarily identical for both models in every market. ASUS also announced that preorders would begin in select markets on September 26, 2025, at 2:00 a.m. CEST, with other countries following on their own schedules through the Microsoft Store, ASUS eShop and participating retailers.

That means three dates should not be confused:
- June 8, 2025: the products were revealed.
- September 26, 2025: preorders began in selected markets.
- October 16, 2025: the confirmed retail launch date.
The official Xbox launch announcement confirms that the handhelds are already on sale, rather than waiting for a future release.
How much does the ROG Xbox Ally cost?
These are the official U.S. prices listed on ASUS’s U.S. eShop during the latest cited update. They are before tax, shipping, discounts, retailer promotions and any subscription costs.

The Ally X’s main upgrades are its higher-tier processor, 24GB of memory, 1TB SSD, impulse triggers and more capable USB-C connectivity. Both models use a 7-inch 1080p IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync Premium. A 120Hz panel does not mean every game will run at 120 frames per second; actual performance depends on the game, settings, power mode and drivers.
Controls and hardware
Both handhelds include ABXY buttons, a D-pad, full-size analog sticks, Xbox, View and Menu buttons, Command Center and Library buttons, two assignable rear buttons, HD haptics and a six-axis IMU. The base Ally has Hall Effect analog triggers, while the Ally X adds impulse triggers.
The base model has two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0, plus a UHS-II microSD reader and a 3.5mm combo audio jack.

The Ally X has one USB4 Type-C port with DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.0, described by Microsoft as Thunderbolt 4 compatible, alongside a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port with DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery 3.0. It also has the microSD reader and 3.5mm audio jack.
What is the Xbox Full Screen Experience?
The handhelds boot into the Xbox Full Screen Experience, a controller-focused interface designed to make Windows easier to use on a small screen. It provides an aggregated gaming library, controller-friendly navigation, access to installed games from Xbox and other major PC storefronts, Xbox Game Bar integration, apps and device controls.

It does not replace Windows 11. Users may still encounter Windows updates, launcher updates, desktop dialogs, game-specific graphics settings, driver problems, anti-cheat restrictions and separate storefront logins. The Xbox interface reduces some of the friction of Windows handheld gaming, but it does not turn the device into a closed, console-style Xbox operating system.
What games can the ROG Xbox Ally play?
Windows PC games
Because both devices are Windows 11 handheld PCs, they can install supported games and applications from Xbox for PC, Steam, the Epic Games Store, Battle.net and other PC storefronts. The Xbox interface can bring installed games together, but it does not guarantee identical controller support or a seamless experience across every launcher.
Xbox Play Anywhere games
Xbox Play Anywhere titles can provide a particularly useful experience for Xbox owners. Where a game supports the program, one digital purchase can provide access on Xbox and Windows PC, with compatible saves, achievements and other progression features synchronizing across platforms.
That support applies only to eligible games. Owning an Xbox console does not automatically make every console game installable on the handheld.

Game Pass games
Game Pass users can play supported PC versions locally when those versions are included in their plan and available for Windows. The Xbox product page also currently advertises three months of Xbox Game Pass Premium with an ROG Xbox Ally or Ally X purchase in eligible markets, described as nearly $45 of value. This is a promotional offer, not permanent access: eligibility, region, claim timing, plan availability and Microsoft’s terms apply. Check the current Game Pass terms before buying on the assumption that the offer is available.
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Supported games can be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming when the user has the required subscription, compatible hardware, supported title and suitable regional availability. The cloud catalog and plan requirements can change over time.
Xbox Remote Play
Xbox Remote Play lets users stream games from their own Xbox console to the handheld, provided the console is configured for the feature and the network connection is adequate. This is different from installing an Xbox console game locally on the device.
The simplest compatibility rule is:
- Local play: requires a supported Windows PC version.
- Cross-device access: may be available through Xbox Play Anywhere for eligible titles.
- Cloud play: depends on Xbox Cloud Gaming, the subscription, the game and the region.
- Console streaming: uses Remote Play from the owner’s Xbox.
Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility Program can offer useful guidance, but its indicators are not promises of a fixed frame rate, maximum settings or console-equivalent performance.
Which ROG Xbox Ally should you buy?
Buy the ROG Xbox Ally for $599.99 if:
- Price is the main consideration.
- You mostly play indie games, older PC games, Game Pass titles or less demanding releases.
- 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage are sufficient for your library.
- You want the Xbox-focused interface without paying for the highest-end hardware.
The base model is the value choice, although 512GB can fill quickly because modern PC games are often large. A microSD card can expand capacity, while the internal SSD is upgradeable, but external storage may not deliver identical performance in every game.
Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X for $999.99 if:
- You regularly play demanding AAA games.
- You want 24GB of memory and 1TB of internal storage.
- You need more processor headroom for higher settings, multitasking or future games.
- The upgraded triggers and USB4 connectivity are valuable to you.
- You are comfortable paying $400 more for the extra hardware.
The Ally X is not merely a cosmetic upgrade. It has a higher-performance processor, more memory, double the storage and additional hardware features. However, the $400 premium does not mean every game will run 67% faster. Results depend on power limits, resolution, thermals, drivers, the game engine and whether a title is CPU- or GPU-limited.
ASUS has promoted claims such as “up to 30%” higher performance and battery comparisons including “up to twice” the battery life in specified tests. Those are manufacturer claims based on selected games and test conditions, not universal results for every title or usage pattern. Battery life also changes with brightness, refresh rate, wireless radios, frame generation, power profile and whether the handheld is plugged in.
What does it cost beyond the handheld?
The advertised hardware price may not be the complete cost of the experience. Depending on how you use the device, budget for:

- microSD card: useful for expanding the base model’s storage.
- SSD upgrade: an option for users who need faster or larger internal storage.
- Dock: useful for connecting to a TV or desktop display, but not required for handheld play.
- External display and peripherals: a keyboard, mouse or controller may be useful for desktop-style use.
- Carrying case and screen protector: optional travel and protection accessories.
Both handhelds include a 65W charger and stand. A dock, external display and peripherals can substantially increase the total cost, so include them in the budget if the aim is to use the Ally as a living-room or desktop replacement.
Important limitations to understand
It is a Windows PC, not a traditional Xbox console
ASUS makes the hardware, while Xbox provides the collaboration and software experience. The result offers Windows flexibility rather than the uniform software environment of an Xbox console. That flexibility is useful for PC storefronts, but it can also mean more setup and troubleshooting.
Xbox integration is not universal game compatibility
The Xbox library view does not make every Xbox console game locally playable. Compatibility can depend on native Windows support, controller support, anti-cheat behavior, launcher requirements, cloud availability, Play Anywhere support and graphics drivers.
Regional terms differ
The launch covered 45 countries, and ASUS announced additional markets including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand and Ukraine. Pricing, stock, preorder timing, Game Pass promotions and cloud-game catalogs can differ by country. Confirm the local ASUS, Microsoft Store or retailer listing before ordering.

The ROG Xbox Ally launched on October 16, 2025, at an official U.S. ASUS price of $599.99, while the ROG Xbox Ally X launched alongside it at $999.99. The base Ally is the sensible value model for lighter gaming and Xbox-focused convenience. The Ally X is aimed at demanding players who will benefit from its stronger processor, 24GB of memory, 1TB storage and upgraded connectivity.
Neither device is a replacement for the Xbox console ecosystem in the strict sense. They are Windows handheld gaming PCs with a more convenient Xbox interface and access to PC games, Play Anywhere titles, cloud streaming and Remote Play where supported.
