#1 Best Overall
Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE CPU Cooler, 6 Heat Pipes AGHP Technology, Dual 120mm PWM Fans, 1550RPM Speed, for AMD:AM4 AM5/Intel LGA 1700/1150/1151/1200/1851,PC Cooler
  • [Brand Overview] Thermalright is a Taiwan brand with more than 20 years of development. It has a certain popularity in the domestic and foreign markets and has a pivotal influence in the player market. We have been focusing on the research and development of computer accessories. R & D product lines include: CPU air-cooled radiator, case fan, thermal silicone pad, thermal silicone grease, CPU fan controller, anti falling off mounting bracket, support mounting bracket and other commodities
  • [Product specification] Thermalright PA120 SE; CPU Cooler dimensions: 125(L)x135(W)x155(H)mm (4.92x5.31x6.1 inch); heat sink material: aluminum, CPU cooler is equipped with metal fasteners of Intel & AMD platform to achieve better installation, double tower cooling is stronger((Note:Please check your case and motherboard for compatibility with this size cooler.)
  • 【2 PWM Fans】TL-C12C; Standard size PWM fan:120x120x25mm (4.72x4.72x0.98 inches); fan speed (RPM):1550rpm±10%; power port: 4pin; Voltage:12V; Air flow:66.17CFM(MAX); Noise Level≤25.6dB(A), leave room for memory-chip(RAM), so that installation of ice cooler cpu is unrestricted
  • 【AGHP technique】6×6mm heat pipes apply AGHP technique, Solve the Inverse gravity effect caused by vertical / horizontal orientation, 6 pure copper sintered heat pipes & PWM fan & Pure copper base&Full electroplating reflow welding process, When CPU cooler works, match with pwm fans, aim to extreme CPU cooling performance
  • 【Compatibility】The CPU cooler Socket supports: Intel:115X/1200/1700/17XX AMD:AM4;AM5; For different CPU socket platforms, corresponding mounting plate or fastener parts are provided(Note: Toinstall the AMD platform, you need to use the original motherboard's built-in backplanefor installation, which is not included with this product)

That makes the 13600K moderately demanding, but it does not automatically require liquid cooling. The 181 W figure is the more useful baseline when choosing a cooler: a small 92 mm cooler or basic single-tower design is a poor choice for unrestricted, sustained all-core work, while a good large single-tower or dual-tower cooler is appropriate for most systems.

Motherboard defaults complicate the picture. Features called multicore enhancement, enhanced turbo, or similar may allow the processor to draw more power for longer than Intel’s published limits. Two apparently “stock” systems can therefore produce different temperatures. Check the motherboard’s power behavior before judging the cooler.

Best overall: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE

The Peerless Assassin 120 SE is the rational default for most 13600K owners. Its dual-tower heatsink, six heatpipes, and two 120 mm fans provide substantially more capacity than entry-level coolers without adding a pump or radiator.

Independent testing found the Peerless Assassin highly competitive with much more expensive air coolers. Gamers Nexus measured 54.1°C over ambient in a 123 W noise-normalized test and 52.1°C over ambient at full fan speed. Those figures are comparative results—not predicted temperatures for every 13600K—and the test was not performed on this exact processor. More recent testing found the cooler handled a Core i7-14700K well in games, while unrestricted x264 and Cinebench workloads produced much higher temperatures. That is a useful distinction: excellent gaming performance does not mean unlimited all-core headroom.

ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 A-RGB - AIO CPU Cooler, Water Cooling
  • CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
  • ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
  • NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
  • INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
  • INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard

Thermalright lists the SE at 155 mm tall with LGA1700 support. Confirm the exact model before ordering: the Peerless Assassin 120, 120 SE, and 120 SE V2 are related but not identical revisions, and their dimensions, fans, or included mounting hardware may differ.

Why choose it

  • Excellent performance per dollar.
  • Enough capacity for most gaming and mixed-use 13600K systems.
  • No pump, liquid, or radiator to install.
  • Lower mechanical complexity than an AIO.

Check before buying

  • Your case must support at least 155 mm of CPU-cooler height, with some additional practical clearance.
  • The front fan may overlap tall DDR5 modules. Raising it can solve the RAM conflict but increases total height and may hit the side panel.
  • Verify LGA1700 mounting hardware in the exact retail package.
  • Large air coolers can interfere with motherboard heatsinks or access around the first PCIe slot.

Best premium air cooler: Noctua NH-D15 G2

The NH-D15 G2 is the premium air-cooling choice. It uses eight heatpipes, 20% more fin surface area than the previous generation according to Noctua, and two NF-A14x25r G2 PWM fans. Noctua also provides a six-year warranty and a strong history of mounting and accessory support.

Gamers Nexus measured the NH-D15 G2 roughly 4°C ahead of the Peerless Assassin in a 250 W Intel comparison. That supports its position as the better-refined premium air cooler, but not necessarily the better value for a 13600K. The same comparison placed a 360 mm Arctic Liquid Freezer ahead of both at that much higher heat load.

Buy the Noctua if you value premium fans, acoustics, build quality, warranty support, and long-term platform support more than the lowest purchase price. For a gaming-only 13600K, its extra cost may not produce a meaningful practical benefit over the Peerless Assassin.

Check the exact NH-D15 G2 variant—standard, HBC, or LBC—before evaluating mounting pressure or compatibility. The cooler is large and may conflict with tall RAM, motherboard heatsinks, or a case side panel.

Best for maximum cooling: Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 360

The Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 is the choice when minimum temperatures and sustained-load headroom matter more than simplicity or cost. It is most appropriate for long rendering, encoding, compiling, simulation, scientific workloads, aggressive motherboard power limits, or manual overclocking.

Tom’s Hardware currently places the Pro 360 among the strongest options for lowest CPU temperatures. Gamers Nexus also found the Liquid Freezer III 360 ahead of the NH-D15 G2 in a 250 W Intel comparison. A 13600K’s official maximum turbo figure is 181 W, however, so those results demonstrate extra capacity rather than a requirement for normal operation.

A 360 mm AIO adds a pump, radiator, tubing, liquid, and more installation constraints. Before buying, confirm front or top 360 mm support, radiator-plus-fan thickness, GPU clearance, tubing orientation, socket-area clearance, and available pump/fan headers. Arctic’s mounting approach may also make an LGA1700 contact-frame decision relevant; Tom’s Hardware specifically identifies a custom contact frame as a drawback for this recommendation.

  • Versatile Compatibility: 152mm tall design offers performance with wide chassis compatibility.
  • Easy Installation: Easy to install with included thermal paste for hassle-free setup and optimal cooling performance.

Choose the Pro 360 when your workload can use its capacity. Do not choose it merely because a generic cooler chart was tested at 250 W or more.

When a 240 or 280 mm AIO makes sense

A good 240 mm AIO can cool a 13600K, especially when the CPU is power-limited or used mainly for gaming. It may be the better fit when your case cannot accept a 155–165 mm tower, when you need unobstructed RAM access, or when the radiator can use a better airflow position than a tower heatsink.

A 280 mm model offers a useful middle ground where the case supports it. Neither size is automatically superior to a strong dual-tower air cooler: compare total cost, pump noise, radiator placement, warranty, and installation complexity. An AIO is a poor value when it costs substantially more than the Peerless Assassin but does not solve a real clearance, noise, or workload problem.

Other sensible options

DeepCool AK620

The AK620 is a reasonable alternative dual-tower cooler if it is easier to find, better matched to your build’s styling, or competitively priced in your region. It should be compared against current Thermalright pricing rather than assumed to be the better buy.

Arctic Freezer 36

The Freezer 36 suits a budget gaming build or a 13600K configured with sensible power limits. It provides less margin than the largest dual-tower coolers under unrestricted sustained loads, so it is not the first choice for heavy all-core work.

Smaller single-tower coolers

Use a smaller cooler only when case size requires it and you are prepared to enforce reasonable power limits. A large cooler in a poorly ventilated case can also perform badly; case intake and exhaust airflow matter as much as heatsink size.

Air cooler versus AIO: choose by workload

Your use Best starting point Reason
Gaming Peerless Assassin 120 SE Strong capacity without pump complexity
Gaming plus occasional rendering Peerless Assassin or NH-D15 G2 Air cooling is normally sufficient; premium air adds refinement
Daily all-core workloads NH-D15 G2 or 240/280 mm AIO More sustained capacity and workload-dependent noise options
Maximum sustained performance Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 Greater thermal headroom at high power
Small case Whichever option passes the clearance check Physical fit takes priority over rankings
Quiet office or workstation Premium air or noise-normalized AIO Maximum fan speed is not the same as quiet daily operation

Installation and setup checklist

  1. Confirm that the exact cooler package includes LGA1700 hardware. Do not assume an older box has the latest bracket.
  2. Measure case CPU-cooler height, or confirm radiator length, thickness, and fan clearance for an AIO.
  3. Check RAM height, top heatsink clearance, side-panel clearance, and possible PCIe-slot obstruction.
  4. Install the correct backplate and mounting brackets from the manufacturer’s manual.
  5. Remove any protective film from the cold plate and apply thermal paste as directed.
  6. Set tower fans to move air toward the rear exhaust. Connect them to CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT as appropriate.
  7. For an AIO, connect pump power correctly, configure the pump header for the required operating mode, and confirm pump RPM.
  8. Update the BIOS if necessary, then check PL1/PL2 or equivalent power settings and any enhanced-turbo option.
  9. Test using the workload you actually run. Monitor package power, temperature, fan or pump RPM, effective clocks, and thermal-throttling flags with HWiNFO or equivalent software.

What to do if temperatures are too high

A 95–100°C reading is not automatically proof of a defective cooler. Intel lists 100°C as the 13600K’s junction limit, and the processor can regulate power and frequency to stay within its thermal envelope. What matters is the combination of temperature, package power, effective clocks, and whether throttling is sustained during the target workload.

If the CPU reaches the limit, check these causes in order:

  • Unusually high motherboard power limits or multicore-enhancement settings.
  • Loose mounting, uneven contact, or incorrect LGA1700 hardware.
  • Protective plastic left on the cold plate or contaminated thermal paste.
  • Fans that are reversed, stalled, or using an overly conservative curve.
  • An AIO pump connected incorrectly, running at a low fixed speed, or producing abnormal noise.
  • Restricted case intake or exhaust airflow.
  • A workload that is an unrestricted stress test rather than normal gaming.
  • A cooler that is simply too small for the selected power limit.

Good gaming temperatures alongside high Cinebench or encoding temperatures can be normal: long all-core workloads sustain substantially more heat than many games. If sustained thermal throttling occurs, reduce the power limit or voltage, improve mounting and airflow, or move to a larger cooler.

Do you need an LGA1700 contact frame?

No. A contact frame can sometimes improve mounting consistency or reduce core-to-core temperature variation, but results depend on the processor, motherboard, frame, and mounting pressure. It is an optional tuning part, not a prerequisite for a good cooler. Installation must be careful: overtightening can create problems and may affect warranty coverage.

Final recommendation

Buy the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE for the typical i5-13600K gaming or mixed-use build, after checking its 155 mm height and RAM clearance. Pick the Noctua NH-D15 G2 when premium air cooling, support, and refinement justify the price. Choose the Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 when sustained high-power workloads, overclocking, or minimum temperatures are the priority. For everyone else, spending more on a 360 mm AIO is usually solving a problem the 13600K does not have.
