The best backup method depends on your device: on Windows, use Export World to create a portable .mcworld file. On Android, copy the world folder only when Minecraft is using External storage. On iPhone, iPad, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch, Realms is generally the practical official way to move or preserve a local world.
Whatever method you use, keep the copy outside Minecraft’s normal storage and test it before deleting or changing the original.
What counts as a real Minecraft backup?
Using Duplicate World creates a useful rollback copy, but it is still on the same device and may be lost if the device storage, Minecraft installation, or application data is damaged. It is a safety layer—not complete disaster recovery.
A proper backup has a second copy outside the world’s normal local storage. That might be:

- A portable

- A world uploaded to Minecraft Realms and later downloaded again.
For an important world, keep at least two dated versions in separate locations and verify that one can actually be imported or downloaded.
This guide covers Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on Windows, Android, iOS/iPadOS, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Java Edition uses different save locations and backup procedures. Minecraft identifies these as separate editions and platforms in its edition guide.
Before backing up
- Exit the world normally and return to the main menu.
- Confirm which platform and storage mode you are using.
- Update devices that will exchange the world to compatible Minecraft versions.
- Make a backup before a major update or before opening the world in Preview/Beta.
- Record the Minecraft version, add-ons, behavior packs, resource packs, experiments, and other dependencies associated with the world.
Do not open the only copy of a valuable world in experimental content. Minecraft warns players to back up worlds before trying Preview features because experimental builds can damage or corrupt saves.
Back up a Bedrock world on Windows
Windows players should use Minecraft’s built-in export control. It creates a portable .mcworld file and is safer and simpler than manually identifying the Bedrock database folder.
- Launch Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
- Select Play.
- On the Worlds tab, select the pencil icon beside the world.
- Open General Settings.
- Scroll to File Management.
- Select Export World.
- Save the resulting
.mcworldfile somewhere outside the Minecraft installation.
Rename the file with the world name and date, such as Survival-Base-2026-09-05.mcworld. Then copy it to a second location—for example, an external drive and a trusted cloud-storage folder. The official procedure is described in Minecraft Help’s Windows backup guide.
Copying the raw Windows folder
Advanced users can also back up the complete Bedrock world-storage directory, commonly associated with a minecraftWorlds folder. The exact path can vary by installation and storage configuration, and folder names may be cryptic. Copy the entire world folder without editing its database files or changing its internal structure.

For most players, Export World is preferable because the resulting package is portable and easier to identify and restore. Keep the original folder until the exported copy has been tested.
Windows cloud backup
Bedrock materials for versions 26.30 and 26.40 describe Windows world cloud backup or synchronization as an early-preview or rollout-dependent capability. If the control appears in your build, treat it as an additional layer—not a replacement for dated .mcworld exports. A synchronization failure, account problem, or bad sync event can affect the cloud copy too. See the 26.30 Bedrock changelog and 26.40 release information.
Back up a Bedrock world on Android
Android is different from Windows because Minecraft can store worlds in either Application or External storage. Check this setting before looking for a folder.
- Open Minecraft.
- Go to Settings.
- Open Storage.
- Check whether the storage location is Application or External.
If Android uses External storage
Minecraft’s documented world directory is:
Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe/files/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds
Copy the relevant world folder to a computer, USB device, or cloud-storage location. Folder names may not match the visible world name, so identify the correct folder carefully. Copy the entire folder, not selected database files, and preserve its structure.
Android file-access restrictions differ by operating-system version and file manager. If your file manager cannot access the path, use a computer or another supported file-management method rather than assuming the world is missing. Minecraft explains the Application-versus-External distinction in its Android world-storage guide.
If Android uses Application storage
Application-storage worlds are kept inside Minecraft’s app data and are generally not available as ordinary folders for copying to a computer. Do not simply browse to Android/data and expect to find them, and do not root the phone as the normal backup solution.

Use Realms to upload the world and later download it to the same or another Bedrock device. If your particular Minecraft build offers a storage-migration or export control, make a copy first and verify the result.
Back up a world on iPhone or iPad
If your current iOS/iPadOS build does not visibly provide an Export World control, Realms is the dependable official route for preserving or transferring the world. iOS normally restricts direct access to application data, so do not assume an iCloud or device backup will produce a portable .mcworld file.
- Sign in to the same Microsoft account on the source and destination devices.
- Update both Minecraft installations to compatible versions.
- On the source device, open Play → Realms.
- Choose a Realm and open its settings.
- Select a world slot and choose Edit World.
- At the bottom of Game Settings, choose Upload World for an empty slot, or Replace World when deliberately overwriting an occupied slot.
- On the destination device, open the same Realm.
- Select the slot, choose Edit World, and select Download World.
The downloaded world should appear in the local Worlds list. Minecraft’s official transfer instructions require an active Realms trial or paid subscription for this workflow.
Back up a world on Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch
Console Bedrock worlds are not ordinarily exposed as user-copyable .mcworld files. Platform cloud-save systems may synchronize game data, but they should not be treated as a portable archive that you can necessarily download and import yourself.
For Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, use Realms:
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Open Realms and select the Realm.
- Open Settings.
- Select a world slot and choose Edit World.
- Choose Upload World for an empty slot, or Replace World to overwrite an existing slot.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account on the target Bedrock device.
- Open the Realm settings and select Download World.
- Find the new local copy, commonly named in the form
World name - Copy, and rename it if desired.
Inspect the Realm name and slot before confirming Replace World. If the existing Realm world matters, download it first so you do not overwrite the only current copy.
Using Realms as a backup
Realms is not an automatic backup of every local world. A local world must first be uploaded to a Realm. Once it is a Realm world, Realms provides automatic backup saves and a restoration workflow.

Realms is especially useful when the source is a console, iPhone/iPad, or Android world in Application storage, or when you are moving between different Bedrock platforms. It requires an active trial or paid subscription for the documented upload/download transfer process. A local export is usually better for Windows players who want permanent control, multiple historical versions, or no ongoing subscription.
Before cancelling or abandoning a Realm, download any world you want to keep. To restore an automatic Realm save, open the Realm’s settings and choose the relevant backup. Restoration can replace the current Realm state, so download the current world first if it contains newer work. See Minecraft’s Realm restoration instructions.

- Move the backup file to local storage on a compatible Bedrock device.
- Open the
.mcworldfile with Minecraft. - Wait for Minecraft to process the import.
- Look for the imported world in the Worlds list.
- Load it and confirm that it contains a recent landmark, inventory item, or build.
The imported world normally appears as a separate copy. Do not delete or overwrite the original until the restored copy loads successfully.
If the file will not import:
- Confirm the filename ends in
.mcworld, not.zipor.mcworld.zip. - Copy it to local storage before opening it.
- Check that the download or file transfer completed and the file size is nonzero.
- Try importing it on another compatible Bedrock installation.
- Check for a version mismatch before attempting recovery.
Microsoft documents .mcworld importing in its Minecraft add-on and world-file guidance.
Verification checklist
After making a backup, verify all of the following:
- The copy exists outside Minecraft’s normal save location.
- The file or folder is nonempty and its size is plausible.
- The filename identifies the world and date.
- A second copy exists somewhere independent.
- The backup imports or downloads successfully.
- The restored world contains a recent build, item, or other recognizable change.
- Add-ons, behavior packs, resource packs, experiments, and settings are present and behave as expected.
- The original world remains untouched until testing is complete.
A world package may not preserve every external dependency in a usable state. Marketplace content, add-on files, experiments, and Minecraft-version changes can affect the restored result, so record what the world requires.

Common problems and the safest response
The Export World button is missing
Check that you are using Bedrock on Windows and are editing the correct world. Labels can move between builds and interfaces. If the control is still absent, use the current build’s documented options; do not assume a random folder path is correct.
The Android folder cannot be opened
Check the storage mode first. The documented minecraftWorlds path applies to External storage, not necessarily Application storage. For Application storage, use Realms instead of treating an inaccessible folder as a file-manager error.
The Realm or world does not appear
Confirm that both devices use the same Microsoft account, that the subscription or trial is active, and that both Minecraft installations are updated to compatible versions. Account sign-in does not automatically restore local worlds.
An upload or export seems stuck
Large worlds can take time. Free storage space, avoid force-closing Minecraft, wait for the operation to finish, and check the resulting file or Realm state before trying again. Keep the older backup until the new one has been tested.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAdd-ons are missing or broken
Record the add-ons and packs used by the world and retain any required third-party files. Do not assume every add-on remains compatible after a Minecraft update.
A dependable backup routine
For Windows, export the world before every major update or risky experiment, then keep dated files in two locations. For Android External storage, copy the complete world folder on the same schedule. For iPhone, iPad, consoles, and Android Application storage, upload the world to Realms and download a copy when transferring or preserving it.
For especially valuable worlds, keep the previous backup until the newest one has been restored and checked. That simple overlap protects you from interrupted exports, bad synchronization, version problems, and accidental Realm-slot replacement.
