1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo link a Microsoft account to an Xbox, sign in to the console with that account. You normally do not need a separate linking code. Use a personal Microsoft account, then add it through the Xbox profile menu.
Signing in, registering the console as a device, and merging two Microsoft accounts are different actions. Signing in connects your Xbox profile; it does not transfer content from another account or combine accounts.
Before you begin
- Have an internet-connected Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- Know the email address, phone number, or Skype name used for your personal Microsoft account. An account alias may also work.
- Have the password and access to any security verification method Microsoft requests.
- If you use a work or school Microsoft 365 account, do not assume it is the same as a personal Xbox account. Microsoft treats personal and organizational accounts as separate account types. See Microsoft’s account-type guidance.
If you do not have a Microsoft account, you can create one for free through Microsoft’s account-creation page or during Xbox setup. A child account may require parent or guardian consent.
How to add your Microsoft account to an Xbox
- Turn on the Xbox and connect it to the internet.
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Add or switch.
- Choose Add new.
- Enter the email address, phone number, Skype name, or alias associated with your personal Microsoft account.
- Enter your password and complete any security verification.
- Follow the remaining prompts to finish signing in or creating the Xbox profile.
Xbox menu wording can vary slightly depending on the console’s software version and whether you are still in the initial setup process. The stable route is to open the Xbox guide, go to the profile area, and choose the option to add or switch accounts. Some screens may show Sign in or Add new instead.

How to check that the account is connected
After signing in, check the following:
- Your expected profile or gamertag appears in the profile area.
- Under Profile & system > Settings > Account, the account information is correct.
- Your account-owned Xbox purchases, subscriptions, achievements, friends, and saved-game data become available after synchronization.
Content remains associated with the Microsoft account that owns it. If you sign in with a different account, you should not expect it to inherit another account’s gamertag, purchases, balance, achievements, or game progress.
If someone else’s account is already on the Xbox
Do not overwrite the existing profile or create a new account to replace it. Add your own profile separately:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Go to Profile & system > Add or switch.
- Select Add new.
- Sign in with your own Microsoft account.
Each person should use their own Xbox profile. This keeps achievements, saved data, privacy settings, purchases, and recommendations associated with the correct account. You can use Add or switch whenever you need to change users.
If the old profile should no longer be available on the console, remove it through the Xbox account-management settings. Removing a profile from the console does not close or delete the Microsoft account; it only removes that sign-in from the device.

Setting up a child’s account
A child should use their own Microsoft account rather than sharing a parent’s Xbox profile. The parent or guardian may need to complete consent steps, and the child can be added to the Microsoft family group.
On Xbox, Microsoft’s family-management route is:
Xbox button > Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members > Add to family
The child must then sign in to the Xbox with the child’s own Microsoft account. Family-group membership and Family Safety settings are separate from simply adding the account to the console, so check the family settings after sign-in. Microsoft’s instructions are available in its family-group guide.
If the Xbox is not appearing among devices associated with the child’s account, Microsoft also documents signing in through the Xbox guide, choosing Add new, and using the child’s Microsoft account. See Microsoft’s device-connection instructions.

Can two Microsoft accounts be merged?
No. Personal Microsoft accounts cannot be linked, merged, or combined into one account. Microsoft says that account-owned items such as the following generally cannot be transferred between personal accounts:
- Xbox profile identity or gamertag
- Game progress and saved data
- Purchases
- Account balance
If you have been using the wrong account, decide which account should retain the Xbox identity and purchases, then continue using that account. Adding a second profile lets another person use the same console, but it does not merge ownership or move content. See Microsoft’s account-combination guidance.
Signing in versus registering the Xbox
If your goal is to use your gamertag, games, subscriptions, friends, or saves, sign in to the Xbox using the steps above.
If your goal is to associate the physical console with your Microsoft account for device management, support, warranty, or service purposes, use account.microsoft.com/devices. Microsoft’s device-management instructions say that manual registration requires the Xbox’s serial number.

Device registration does not connect or migrate an Xbox profile, and it does not merge Microsoft accounts.

You cannot remember the account email
Check old Microsoft or Xbox emails, purchase receipts, and the account information shown under any profile already signed in on the console. You can also use Microsoft’s sign-in and recovery guidance. Avoid immediately creating a new account: it will normally create a separate Xbox profile without the original account’s purchases or progress.
Your password does not work
Use Microsoft’s account-recovery or sign-in helper instead of repeatedly guessing. Do not give your password or verification codes to another person or an unofficial recovery service.
You are using a work or school account
Xbox normally requires the personal-account route. A work or school identity cannot simply be converted into or merged with a personal Xbox account. Create or recover the correct personal Microsoft account, then add that account to the console.

The child cannot join the family group
Check that adult consent is complete, the parent is signed in as the family organizer, and the child is using the same Microsoft account that was invited. A person who already belongs to another family group may need to leave or be removed before joining a different one, according to Microsoft’s family-group guidance.
The Xbox does not appear in the device list
This does not necessarily mean the Xbox profile failed to connect. Profile sign-in and hardware registration are separate. Open account.microsoft.com/devices and follow Microsoft’s registration process, using the console serial number if manual registration is required.
Purchases or saves are missing
First confirm that you signed in with the Microsoft account that owns the content. Signing in with another account is not a transfer or merge, so it will not bring over another account’s purchases, balance, gamertag, achievements, or progress.
When to contact Microsoft or Xbox Support
Use Microsoft’s official recovery and support channels if you cannot identify the account, complete identity verification, regain access, or resolve a child-consent problem. Be ready to verify ownership through the account’s approved security methods. Never share passwords or one-time security codes with anyone claiming they can link or recover the account for you.
