There were not 13 credible, working PlayStation 3 emulators in 2022. For most PC users, RPCS3 was the only serious general-purpose option. Several names commonly included in “best PS3 emulator” lists were actually PSP, PS1, SNES, or multi-system emulators; others were cloud-streaming services or poorly documented Android apps.
This guide separates genuine PS3 emulation from alternatives and unsupported claims, explains what RPCS3 could and could not do in 2022, and shows how to check whether a particular game is likely to work.

The frequently copied 13-item list that inspired this topic mixes all of these categories together. That creates the false impression that Android users and PC users had a choice of 13 working PS3 emulators. They did not. The source list itself describes some entries as cloud services or emulators for other consoles.
What qualifies as a PS3 emulator?
A genuine emulator reproduces enough of the PlayStation 3’s hardware and system behavior to run PS3 software locally on another platform. That is different from:
#1 Best Overall
- Internet Ready With Built-in Wi-Fi with a Cell Broadband Engine Advanced Microprocessor
- When starting up the system for the first time, hold the power button until a "screen display" message shows up on screen. Select the desired output, and the system will startup normally.
- 160GB system
- Blu-ray player to give you pristine picture quality
- The best high-definition viewing experience available
- A frontend: RetroArch provides an interface for emulator cores; it is not, by itself, a PS3 emulator.
- An emulator for another PlayStation: PPSSPP emulates PSP, ePSXe emulates the original PlayStation, and PCSX2 emulates PlayStation 2.
- A cloud service: PlayStation Now and Vortex streamed games from remote servers rather than running PS3 software on your device.
- An APK with a PS3-themed name: A downloadable Android app is not evidence that it can run commercial PS3 games.
1. RPCS3: the serious option
RPCS3 was the principal credible general-purpose PS3 emulator available to ordinary users in 2022. It is open source, has identifiable development and documentation, and maintains a title-by-title compatibility database. The project describes itself as a free, open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger.
It was not a universal “play every PS3 game” solution. The Cell Broadband Engine and the PS3’s unusual heterogeneous architecture make accurate emulation demanding, and results vary substantially by game. A title can boot but still have graphical corruption, missing audio, shader-compilation stutter, crashes, broken video playback, controller problems, or performance too poor to finish.
The official August 2022 compatibility snapshot used the project’s normal status categories. Most tested entries were classified as Playable or Ingame, but those labels describe tested entries, not a guarantee for every game, release, region, or computer.
What RPCS3 required in 2022
The historical RPCS3 FAQ listed these baseline requirements:
- An x64 CPU.
- A 64-bit Windows, Linux, or BSD installation.
- An OpenGL 4.3-capable graphics card.
- A modern Vulkan-compatible GPU was recommended.
- On Windows, the Visual C++ 2019 Redistributable.
- Integrated Intel graphics could be problematic and were not supported in that historical FAQ.
These were version-specific 2022 requirements, not a permanent specification. RPCS3’s requirements change as the emulator, drivers, and operating systems change. The current project materials direct Windows users toward current graphics drivers and the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2022. The repository now lists Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD support and shows release v0.0.40 dated March 3, 2026, but those later details should not be projected backward onto 2022.
RPCS3’s strengths and limits
- Strengths: The strongest project legitimacy among the names in this list, open-source development, an official compatibility database, local saves, controller configuration, and the possibility of resolution or graphics enhancements.
- Limits: Demanding hardware, game-specific settings, incomplete compatibility, limited special-peripheral support, and no general promise of PlayStation Network functionality.
The other 12 names, fact-checked
2. PlayStation Now — cloud streaming, not emulation
PlayStation Now belonged in a discussion of alternatives, not a ranking of PS3 emulators. The service streamed games from Sony’s servers, so the local device did not emulate the PS3. Its catalog, availability, subscription terms, and service identity were time- and region-dependent. Do not treat historical PlayStation Now information as a current service description without checking the relevant country and date.
Rank #2
- New slimmer, lighter PS3 system, Wireless controller
- 320GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos
- Streams thousands of movies and TV shows instantly from Netflix
- Built-in Blu-ray player with 3D capabilities. HDMI output for 1080p resolution.
Cloud gaming can be easier than configuring RPCS3 and places less demand on a local PC, but it requires a suitable internet connection, depends on catalog availability, adds network latency, and does not provide the same offline or local-rendering experience.
3. Vortex Cloud Gaming — another non-emulator
Vortex was also a cloud-gaming service rather than software that reproduced PS3 hardware on the reader’s device. Whether it offered a particular game or operated in a particular market was a separate availability question. It should not be counted as a PS3 emulator.
4. PPSSPP — PSP, not PS3
PPSSPP is a well-known emulator for Sony’s PlayStation Portable. It cannot be used as evidence that a device can emulate PlayStation 3 software. A game with both PSP and PS3 versions may run through PPSSPP only when you are playing the PSP version.
5. ePSXe — original PlayStation, not PS3
ePSXe targets the first PlayStation. Its presence in a PS3-emulator list is a straightforward platform mismatch. A PS1 version of a game may be playable through ePSXe, but that says nothing about the PS3 release.
6. Mednafen — multi-system software, not a PS3 solution
Mednafen emulates several older systems. It was not a demonstrated general-purpose PlayStation 3 emulator in 2022. Multi-system support should never be confused with support for every console in a manufacturer’s lineup.
7. BizHawk — useful tool suite, wrong category
BizHawk is a multi-system emulator and tool suite used particularly in precision gaming and speedrunning workflows. It was not a credible PS3 emulator recommendation. Its inclusion in a broad list does not establish PS3 compatibility.

- Free membership and access to all the events, as well as game, movie, TV and other media content available on the PlayStation Network (PSN).
8. RetroArch — a frontend, not an automatic PS3 emulator
RetroArch provides a common interface for emulator cores. Installing RetroArch does not install a working PS3 emulator. To count as PS3 emulation, a genuine, functioning PS3 core would need to exist and demonstrate credible compatibility; the frontend’s availability on a platform is not enough.
9. SNES9x — Super Nintendo emulation
SNES9x emulates the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Famicom. It has no place in a list of software that runs PlayStation 3 games.
10. ESX PS3 — treat claims skeptically
ESX PS3 was presented in some online lists as a PS3 emulator, but a name and download page are not sufficient evidence. A responsible recommendation would require an identifiable project source, source code or meaningful development history, reproducible releases, and credible title-by-title PS3 test results. Without that evidence, it should not be placed alongside RPCS3 as an equally usable option.
11. PSeMu3 — not supported by comparable evidence
PSeMu3 was another claimed PS3 project that lacked the kind of independently verifiable compatibility evidence available for RPCS3. Treating it as a dependable emulator based solely on its branding or a download listing would overstate what was known in 2022.
12. New PS3 Emulator — an unverified Android claim
An Android package called “New PS3 Emulator” did not establish that Android hardware could reliably run commercial PS3 software. Be especially cautious when an app has no official repository, no transparent release history, no compatibility database, and no reproducible demonstrations.
13. EmuPs3-Ps3 Emulator Project — do not confuse an APK with a working emulator
EmuPs3-Ps3 Emulator Project was commonly associated with Android-emulator claims, but it should not be recommended as a reliable general-purpose solution without authoritative documentation and independently reproducible results. An APK mirror, advertising page, or promise of high compatibility is not technical validation.

How to read RPCS3’s compatibility ratings
Use the official RPCS3 compatibility list before installing or configuring a game. Its broad status definitions are:
- Playable: The game can generally be completed with playable performance and without game-breaking glitches.
- Ingame: The game reaches gameplay but may have serious problems, inadequate performance, or may not be completable.
- Intro: It displays an image or reaches an introductory point but does not progress into usable gameplay.
- Loadable: It loads or displays a black screen but does not become playable.
- Nothing: It fails to initialize, crashes, or does not load.
“Playable” does not mean perfect on every PC. Compatibility reports can change with emulator builds, patches, drivers, and game updates. Search by the exact Game ID, not just the marketing title. Disc and digital releases, regions, and other versions can have separate entries, as explained in the project’s Game Compatibility documentation.

Safe RPCS3 setup
The following is a version-qualified, legal setup outline rather than a source for games:
- Download RPCS3 from the project’s official repository or official project download channel.
- Check the requirements for the particular build and operating system you are using.
- On Windows, install the runtime components specified by the current project documentation and keep graphics drivers current.
- Obtain the official PS3 system software from Sony’s PlayStation support resources, then use RPCS3’s firmware-installation option.
- Use game data dumped from your own discs or legitimately obtained digital purchases, subject to the law applicable where you live.
- Add the game directory in RPCS3.
- Find the exact title, region, media type, and Game ID in the official compatibility database.
- Apply game-specific patches or settings only when the compatibility notes or project documentation support them.
- Configure a controller under Configuration > Pads.
- Start with default settings. Test the intended game before changing advanced options, because a setting that helps one title can harm another.
The emulator is separate from the games and system software. Avoid “BIOS packs,” cracked builds, preconfigured game bundles, ROM sites, and unofficial downloads that claim to include commercial content.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controllers, local multiplayer, and online play
According to the historical RPCS3 FAQ, local multiplayer supported up to seven controllers, with keyboard and gamepad input usable together. A standard XInput-compatible controller is usually the simplest starting point; manual mapping may be needed when automatic detection fails.
That does not mean every PS3 accessory works perfectly. DualShock 3 pairing may require additional operating-system configuration, while pressure-sensitive controls, PlayStation Move, cameras, guitars, and other specialist peripherals can require unusual setup or remain problematic.

Do not assume that a game running locally also has working online features. The historical FAQ described real-console online connectivity as technically and legally impractical and said online multiplayer was not close to implementation at that stage. Online-only games may therefore be unsuitable even when their local code boots.
Common problems and sensible first steps
The game boots but runs slowly
- Check whether the official entry says Ingame rather than Playable.
- Update graphics drivers and use a current build appropriate to your date and operating system.
- Allow for shader compilation or first-run cache building before diagnosing every stutter as permanent.
- Return to default settings and use only documented, game-specific changes.
- Do not transfer random settings from an unrelated title.
Black screen or crash on launch
- Verify that the firmware installed successfully.
- Check that the game data is complete and matches a supported release.
- Confirm the exact Game ID and region.
- Remove unofficial patches and custom configuration files temporarily.
- Compare the result with the official compatibility notes before changing advanced options.
Audio glitches
Check the individual game’s compatibility notes. A temporary first-run issue and a persistent emulator defect are different problems, and there is no single audio setting that fixes every title.
The controller is not detected
Open the pad configuration menu, select the appropriate handler, and map buttons manually if necessary. Testing with a standard XInput controller can help distinguish an emulator configuration problem from a DualShock 3 pairing or operating-system issue.
How to spot a fake or misleading PS3 emulator
Be wary of any app or website that:
- Promises “90% compatibility” without a dated, title-by-title database.
- Has no identifiable developers, source repository, issue tracker, or release history.
- Offers only an APK mirror or an ad-heavy download page.
- Requests unusual permissions unrelated to emulation.
- Includes commercial games, “all ROMs,” or a “BIOS” in the download.
- Requires surveys, cryptocurrency payments, or repeated redirects before downloading.
- Shows gameplay without identifying the exact emulator build, game version, settings, and hardware.
Unofficial downloads can expose users to aggressive advertising, unwanted software, misleading compatibility claims, or pirated content. Download the emulator and firmware only from authoritative sources and obtain game data through lawful means applicable to your jurisdiction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should you use instead?
- Choose RPCS3 if you have a capable PC, want local play, and your specific game has a favorable compatibility entry.
- Choose original PS3 hardware for games that depend on unusual accessories, online services, or titles that remain unstable in emulation.
- Consider an official remaster or port when the game is available on a newer platform.
- Consider cloud gaming only when the service, catalog, account requirements, and region are confirmed for the date you intend to play. It is a convenience alternative, not PS3 emulation.
- Use another emulator only for another version of the game. PPSSPP, ePSXe, PCSX2, and SNES9x may be useful when a game exists on PSP, PS1, PS2, or SNES, but they do not run the PS3 release.
Bottom line
In 2022, the honest answer to “What were the 13 best PS3 emulators?” was that there were not 13 credible choices. RPCS3 was the principal legitimate general-purpose emulator, and even it required capable hardware, official firmware, legitimate game data, and title-by-title compatibility checking. PlayStation Now and Vortex were streaming alternatives; PPSSPP, ePSXe, Mednafen, BizHawk, RetroArch, and SNES9x belonged to other categories; and the Android names lacked enough reliable evidence to recommend them as working PS3 solutions.
