Minecraft authentication errors are not one single problem. The cause may be a Microsoft/Xbox outage, the wrong Microsoft account, an expired login session, outdated Windows services, multiplayer restrictions, a version mismatch, or a problem affecting only one server.
Use this order: check service status, confirm the account that owns Minecraft, refresh your sign-in, update the game and related apps, then investigate permissions, mods, or server-specific problems. Do not reinstall or buy Minecraft again until you have verified the account and backed up your worlds.
First, identify where the failure happens
Note the exact message before trying fixes. The wording and timing usually indicate which branch to follow.
| What you see | Likely area |
|---|---|
| “Something went wrong,” “Failed to request token,” or “We could not sign you into your Microsoft account” before the game opens | Account, launcher, Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, or an outage |
| “Failed to verify username,” “Invalid session,” or “Authentication servers are down” in Java multiplayer | Expired session, Mojang/Microsoft account identity, service outage, or a server-side problem |
| Bedrock errors such as Drowned, Axolotl, Bamboo, Blaze, Guardian, or Honeycomb | Microsoft/Xbox sign-in, platform connectivity, account synchronization, or multiplayer services |
| “Multiplayer is disabled” | Privacy settings, family controls, or a missing console multiplayer subscription—not necessarily failed authentication |
Minecraft’s Bedrock error guidance maps named errors to broad causes, but the exact fix still depends on your edition and platform.

1. Check for a Minecraft, Xbox, or platform outage
Check the Xbox service status and the relevant Minecraft or PlayFab service status before changing passwords or reinstalling anything. Console and mobile players should also check the status page for PlayStation, Nintendo, Apple, or Google Play, as applicable. Minecraft specifically recommends checking these services when sign-in or multiplayer errors occur.
Ask a friend on the same service whether they are seeing the problem. If several players are affected, there is nothing a local reinstall can repair. Wait for the incident to end and try again later. Repeated sign-outs and password changes during an outage can create additional session confusion.
2. Confirm the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft
On Windows, Minecraft Launcher, the Xbox app, and the Microsoft Store can be signed into different Microsoft accounts. The game may install or open while the wrong account fails the ownership or authentication check.
- Check the email address shown in Minecraft or the launcher.
- Check the account signed into the Xbox app.
- Check the account signed into the Microsoft Store.
- Look for the original purchase confirmation email.
- Verify ownership in the correct account’s Microsoft account Order History.
Do not create a new Microsoft account as a test unless you understand the consequences. A new account does not inherit the original purchase, Java profile, worlds, or multiplayer identity. If you migrated from a Mojang account, use the Microsoft account associated with that migration; Minecraft explains the account-identity implications in its migration guidance.
3. Refresh the sign-in session
Windows PC
- Close Minecraft and Minecraft Launcher completely.
- Sign out of the Xbox app.
- Sign out of the Microsoft Store.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Xbox app and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
- Confirm the expected email address and gamertag.
- Open Minecraft Launcher and sign in with the same account.
- Launch the correct edition and test again.
Minecraft’s official sign-in guidance specifically recommends signing into the Xbox app before Minecraft on Windows.

Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android, and iOS
Use Minecraft’s own account sign-out or reset option, fully close the game rather than leaving it suspended, restart the device, and sign in again. The menu labels differ between Java, Bedrock, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS, so do not assume that a Windows menu path applies to every platform.
If the session remains stuck, changing the Microsoft-account password can force a fresh sign-in. Minecraft lists this as a possible remedy for the Drowned error, but it is a later reset—not a guaranteed solution for an outage, wrong account, or server problem.
4. Update Minecraft and its dependencies
Install updates for every component involved in the sign-in path:
- Minecraft Launcher.
- Minecraft Java or Bedrock Edition.
- Xbox app.
- Microsoft Store apps and Gaming Services on Windows.
- Your console’s system software and Minecraft installation.
- Minecraft and the relevant platform services on Android or iOS.
On Windows, open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates. The official Minecraft download page says the launcher normally updates automatically but can also be updated through the Store Library.
For Bedrock multiplayer, use the same edition and version as the friend or server. On the launcher, choose Latest release unless the server specifically supports a preview or beta build. Java players should similarly test the official, supported profile rather than a snapshot or modified profile.

5. Repair Gaming Services on Windows
If the account is correct and updates have installed, use the official Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC. Minecraft identifies it as a Windows-only remedy for problems involving Minecraft, the launcher, or Gaming Services.
After the repair completes, restart Windows, sign into the Xbox app first, and then retry Minecraft. This step does not apply to Xbox consoles, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, or iOS.

6. Check whether multiplayer is authorized
An account can authenticate successfully and still be forbidden from joining multiplayer. Check:
- Microsoft/Xbox privacy settings.
- Family and child-account restrictions.
- Whether multiplayer is enabled.
- Whether cross-platform play is allowed when needed.
- Communication restrictions.
- The required online multiplayer subscription for your console platform.
Minecraft’s Bedrock multiplayer guidance covers disabled multiplayer, child accounts, editions, versions, and console requirements. These settings control what a correctly signed-in account is allowed to do; changing them will not repair a failed Microsoft account token.

7. Temporarily disable mods, add-ons, and preview builds
For Bedrock, disable add-ons and return to the standard release channel. Test a fresh world or a known-working multiplayer session.
For Java, use the official launcher and an unmodified profile. Temporarily remove client-side mods and third-party launchers from the diagnostic path. If the official profile authenticates correctly, restore modifications one at a time.
Mods and add-ons generally cause compatibility or connection failures rather than proving that the Microsoft account is invalid. Vanilla testing separates an account problem from a modified-installation problem.

Try single-player, another multiplayer server, a friend’s world, or Realms if available.
- Fails everywhere: investigate the account, launcher, platform, or service status.
- Fails only on one server: the server may be offline, running a different version, enforcing a whitelist or ban, or experiencing a server-side authentication problem.
- Works in Bedrock but not Java: investigate the edition-specific launcher, profile, version, or server.
- Works on console but not Windows: focus on the Windows account, Xbox app, Microsoft Store, or Gaming Services state.
- Works on Windows but not console or mobile: check platform linking, platform status, and local app state.
Do not disable server authentication or use offline-mode workarounds to bypass the message. Those changes can create security and player-identity problems and are not legitimate fixes for an account-authentication failure.

9. Reinstall only after protecting your worlds
Reinstallation can repair damaged installation files, but it cannot fix an outage, wrong Microsoft account, privacy restriction, missing console subscription, or server-side failure.
Before uninstalling:
- Back up worlds and save data.
- Record the exact error message or code.
- Confirm the Microsoft account email, gamertag, edition, and platform.
- Verify ownership in Order History.
- Try service checks, sign-out/sign-in, updates, and the Windows repair tool where applicable.
Minecraft’s Launcher Support and general troubleshooting guidance both emphasize backing up files before uninstalling or reinstalling. Reinstall using the official launcher or platform store, then sign in with the account that owns the game.
When to contact Minecraft or Xbox support
Stop repeating local fixes when the same account fails across multiple supported devices, ownership is correct, services are available, and another server works. Contact Minecraft Support with:
- The exact error message and code.
- Edition, platform, device, and operating-system version.
- Minecraft and launcher version.
- The Microsoft account and gamertag in use.
- Whether Order History shows ownership.
- Whether the error affects every server or only one.
- Whether friends or other players are affected.
- The troubleshooting steps already completed.
Do not assume a generic authentication message means the account is banned. Enforcement, licensing, platform permissions, and temporary login failures require different evidence and support paths.
