Garry’s Mod is a standalone Windows PC game sold through Steam. It is a physics sandbox rather than a conventional campaign: you spawn props and characters, build machines, experiment with tools, install community addons, and join multiplayer modes such as Prop Hunt, Trouble in Terrorist Town, DarkRP, and Murder.
The Steam page listed the game at $9.99 USD during research, although regional prices and sales vary. Windows 10 is listed as the minimum operating system, while Windows 10 and 11 are listed in the recommended range. The game remains supported; the latest official Facepunch update verified for this guide was dated April 29, 2026.
What is Garry’s Mod?
Garry’s Mod—usually shortened to GMod—is a physics-based sandbox developed by Facepunch Studios and published by Valve. It was released on November 29, 2006 and is built on a modified version of Valve’s Source Engine.
There is no single campaign, fixed objective, or required progression path. In Sandbox, you can spawn objects, pick them up with the Physics Gun, connect them with tools, pose ragdolls, create vehicles and contraptions, or simply experiment. Community-created addons and gamemodes turn the same installation into a building toy, role-playing game, social server, machinima tool, or competitive party game.

Is Garry’s Mod still available and updated on Windows?
Yes. Garry’s Mod remains available through Steam for Windows and continues to receive official maintenance. The latest official update entry verified for this article was the April 2026 Update, dated April 29, 2026.
That update added support for mounting Black Mesa and Military Conflict: Vietnam, improved the HUD and high-resolution scaling, added the Combine APC to the default spawn menu, and included networking, Workshop-download, performance, and bug fixes. This is the latest dated update entry verified here, not a claim about a permanent version number.

Steam lists the following requirements:
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | Windows 10/11 |
| Processor | 2 GHz processor or better | 2.5 GHz processor or better |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |

| DirectX | DirectX 9.0c | DirectX 9.0c |
| Storage | 10 GB available | 25 GB available |
| Other | Broadband internet, DirectX 9-compatible sound, mouse, keyboard, monitor | Broadband internet |
These figures are not a guarantee of smooth performance in heavily modded multiplayer. Large maps, NPC-heavy scenes, high-resolution assets, extensive scripted addons, and crowded servers can demand substantially more CPU, GPU, memory, and storage than a clean Sandbox session.
Price and where to buy
The standard U.S. Steam price shown during research was $9.99. Steam pricing depends on country, currency, taxes, and temporary discounts, so check the current store page before purchasing.
Steam is the legitimate Windows distribution. Avoid “free full version” installers, pirated copies, unofficial keys, and download pages that request Steam credentials. They may contain malware, outdated files, or illegally redistributed game data.

What to do first
Start with a private, single-player Sandbox session. Key bindings can be changed, so check Options if a key does not match your configuration.
- Open the spawn menu and choose a simple prop.
- Use the Physics Gun to pick up, move, rotate, and freeze it.
- Open the Tool Gun and try a basic constraint such as weld, rope, or axis.
- Use the context menu to inspect object and player options.
- Build a small platform, vehicle, or stack of objects.
- Save a construction or experiment with duplications before joining public servers.
The official Garry’s Mod Wiki covers the spawn menu, Physics Gun, Tool Gun, context menu, multiplayer, and dedicated servers.
Sandbox, addons, and the Steam Workshop
Sandbox is the default creative mode. It lets you spawn props, NPCs, weapons, vehicles, and other entities; manipulate them with physics tools; pose characters; and create contraptions. It works alone or in multiplayer.
GMod calls its mods addons. Addons can add maps, weapons, vehicles, models, NPCs, tools, interfaces, gamemodes, and scripting features. The Steam page describes a Workshop containing more than 300,000 models, maps, and contraptions.
Recommended Free Tools
For most players, the safest workflow is:
- Use the Steam Workshop or the game’s Addons menu.
- Read the description, requirements, update date, and comments.
- Subscribe to only a few items at first.
- Restart or reload if an addon does not appear.
- Unsubscribe from recently added items when diagnosing crashes, Lua errors, missing textures, or broken menus.
Manual installation is also supported through the game’s garrysmod/addons/ directory, as documented by the official addon guide. That path does not make an external download trustworthy; third-party addon sites are harder to update and troubleshoot.
Multiplayer and popular gamemodes
GMod supports online and LAN play, online co-op, PvP, and Steam-listed cross-platform multiplayer features. Actual compatibility depends on the server, its addons, and its rules.

You can join a public server, host a local game for friends, or run a dedicated server. Public servers differ widely in moderation, performance, voice-chat culture, age suitability, required addons, and content. They are not one uniform multiplayer experience. Use the official multiplayer guide when looking for a server.
Do you need Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, or Team Fortress 2?
No—not to buy and launch Garry’s Mod itself. It is sold as a standalone game.
Some servers, maps, and gamemodes use assets from other Source games. Steam specifically warns that content may require games such as Counter-Strike: Source or Team Fortress 2. Missing those assets can result in purple-and-black textures, error models, missing sounds, or incomplete maps.
GMod can mount content from supported games, but you must own and install the relevant game on Steam. The April 2026 update added Black Mesa and Military Conflict: Vietnam to the mountable-game list. That does not make either game free or universally required.

Missing textures or error models
- Check whether the problem occurs in single-player or only on one server.
- Read the server’s required-content and Workshop information.
- Confirm that any required mounted game is owned and installed.
- Unsubscribe from recently added addons.
- Verify Garry’s Mod files through Steam.
- Reconnect after all Workshop downloads finish.
Crashes after installing addons
Disable the newest addon first and test a clean Sandbox session. Re-enable items in small groups. Avoid multiple addons that replace the same HUD, weapon, player model, or gamemode. Maintained Workshop releases are generally easier to manage than abandoned manual downloads.
A server will not let you join
Possible causes include a full or restricted server, missing Workshop content, a required game dependency, local addon conflicts, network or firewall issues, an anti-cheat or ban status, or a client/server mismatch. The April 2026 update improved version-mismatch messaging and added clearer notifications when server downloads fail.

Test the same map in clean Sandbox. If performance improves, the likely cause is a server, addon, large prop count, NPC-heavy scene, or high-resolution asset rather than the base game alone. The official requirements are targets, not benchmark results.

Is Garry’s Mod worth buying on Windows?
Buy it if you enjoy experimentation, building, physics systems, role-play, machinima, user-generated content, or discovering unusual community modes. At the listed price, the Workshop and multiplayer ecosystem can provide substantial variety.
It is a weaker fit if you want a story campaign, tightly structured progression, uniformly moderated multiplayer, modern technology without legacy-engine quirks, or a game that never requires addon troubleshooting. Its freedom is also its main learning curve: the first hour can feel directionless until you choose a project, addon collection, or server.
For the best first experience, purchase the Steam version, learn the basic Sandbox tools without addons, then add Workshop content gradually and check each server’s requirements before joining.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Garry’s Mod free on Windows?
No. The base game is a paid Steam product. Workshop addons may be available at no additional charge, but they do not make Garry’s Mod itself free.
Does Garry’s Mod work on Windows 11?
Yes. Steam lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 in the recommended operating-system range.
Can I play Garry’s Mod alone?
Yes. Sandbox can be played offline or alone, although an internet connection is needed for downloading Steam content and joining online servers.
Is Garry’s Mod the same as s&box?
No. Garry’s Mod is the existing Steam game covered here. s&box is a separate Facepunch project and is not required to play GMod.
How much storage do addons need?
Steam lists 10 GB minimum and 25 GB recommended for the game, but Workshop addons require additional space. Large collections can grow considerably, so leave more free storage than the base requirement.
