Yes—the PS5 Pro upgrade promised by Sony is now available. It is an improved version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s machine-learning image-reconstruction technology. Sony announced it on February 27, 2026, and began its broader public rollout through a PS5 system software update on March 16.
That means the older claim that the feature “could be available within weeks” is now out of date. Existing PS5 Pro owners do not need a new console, but they may need both the latest system software and an updated, compatible game to see the best results.

What the PS5 Pro upgrade actually is
Upgraded PSSR is software, not a hardware revision. It does not add GPU power, upgrade the PS5 Pro’s CPU, or turn every game into a higher-frame-rate title. Instead, it analyzes a game’s rendered image and reconstructs a cleaner, higher-quality output.
In practical terms, PSSR is designed to make games look more stable and detailed while allowing developers to target a useful balance between visual quality and performance. Sony says the upgraded version improves image stability, fine-detail clarity, motion reconstruction, and consistency between image quality and frame-rate targets. Sony’s announcement explains the improvements.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
It is still an upscaler and reconstruction system, so do not read “higher effective resolution” as a guarantee of native 4K. The result depends on a game’s internal rendering resolution, graphics mode, implementation, scene complexity, and the quality of its developer integration.
When did upgraded PSSR launch?
- February 27, 2026: Sony announced the upgraded PSSR and said it would roll out globally “in the coming weeks.” Sony identified Resident Evil Requiem as the first announced game using it. Read the original announcement.
- March 16, 2026: Sony announced broad support through a PS5 system software update, alongside an optional PS5 Pro setting for existing supported games. See the rollout announcement.
- April 7, 2026: Assassin’s Creed Shadows received access to the new upscaler alongside Title Update 1.1.9. Sony’s announcement covers the game’s implementation.
So, as of September 2026, this is a released feature—not a beta promise or an upcoming PS5 Pro hardware upgrade.
Which games support upgraded PSSR?
Sony’s March announcement highlighted upgraded-PSSR support for several games, including:
| Game | What is confirmed | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| SILENT HILL 2 | Included among Sony’s highlighted supported titles | Results vary by graphics mode and game update |
| SILENT HILL f | Included among Sony’s highlighted supported titles | Check that the game is fully updated |
| Monster Hunter Wilds | Included among Sony’s highlighted supported titles | Visual gains may differ between performance and quality modes |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | Included among Sony’s highlighted supported titles | Compare image quality during movement, not only in screenshots |
| Crimson Desert | Included among Sony’s highlighted supported titles | Support does not guarantee identical behavior in every mode |
| Dragon Age: The Veilguard | Included among Sony’s highlighted supported titles | Install the latest game update |
| Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II | Included among Sony’s highlighted supported titles | Check the game’s own display options |
| Assassin’s Creed Shadows | Access announced with Title Update 1.1.9 | See Ubisoft’s update and in-game options |
| Resident Evil Requiem | Announced as the first title using upgraded PSSR | Availability and behavior depend on the installed game version |
The important distinction is that “PS5 Pro game” and “upgraded-PSSR game” are not automatically the same thing. There are several different levels of support:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Developer-optimized support: The studio updates the game specifically for the improved PSSR implementation.
- New-release support: A game launches with the technology integrated from the start.
- System-level support: Sony’s optional PS5 Pro setting applies the improved system to existing supported games.
- No relevant support: Games without PS5 Pro enhancement or PSSR compatibility should not be expected to benefit.
A developer patch can be better tuned to a game’s reconstruction targets, motion vectors, graphics modes, and difficult visual effects. The system-level option is useful, but it should not be treated as a universal replacement for a dedicated patch.
What difference should PS5 Pro owners expect?
The most visible improvements are likely to appear in areas that are difficult for reconstruction systems: foliage, thin wires, hair, fences, distant geometry, fine textures, particles, and transparent surfaces. During camera movement, upgraded PSSR may reduce the shimmer, crawling, or instability that can make a reconstructed image look softer than expected.
In supported games, the technology may also help developers offer a higher-frame-rate mode without sacrificing as much apparent detail. That does not mean every game will run at 60 frames per second, and it does not create frame generation. A game’s CPU limits, engine design, and chosen graphics targets still apply.
Do not expect a fixed improvement percentage or a universal “native 4K” result. Sony has described improvements in stability, detail, motion reconstruction, and consistency—not a single resolution or frame-rate guarantee for every title.

How to install the PS5 Pro system update
On an internet-connected PS5 Pro, use Sony’s standard update path:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select System Software.
- Select System Software Update and Settings.
- Choose Update System Software if an update is available.
Sony recommends leaving automatic updates enabled. The current firmware number can change, so it is better to check the console or Sony’s current PS5 system software support page than to rely on an old version number.
How to enable the optional system-level enhancement
After updating the console, look in the PS5 Pro’s system or graphics-related settings for the optional improved-PSSR or image-quality enhancement setting described in Sony’s March announcement. Enable it, then launch a compatible, fully updated game.

Sony’s announcement confirms the setting, but menu labels can change with later firmware. For that reason, an exact permanent menu path should not be treated as universal. If the option is missing:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Confirm that the console is a PS5 Pro, not a standard PS5.
- Install the latest system software.
- Update the game itself.
- Check whether the game is PS5 Pro-enhanced or PSSR-compatible.
- Restart the game after installing updates.
- Look for a dedicated Pro, performance, quality, or PSSR option inside the game.
- Compare the image in motion and in the same graphics mode.
The system-level option may not produce the same result as a developer-tuned patch. It can also expose artifacts in foliage, hair, particles, transparencies, or fast-moving objects. If a game looks worse with the enhancement enabled, compare both settings rather than assuming the newest option must be best.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the regular PS5 get upgraded PSSR?
No. Sony’s upgraded PSSR rollout is specifically for PS5 Pro hardware. Standard PS5 owners should not expect the same feature or the same reconstruction behavior from the system update.
That does not mean every PS5 Pro owner will see a dramatic change. The benefit depends on the game, the graphics mode, the display, the viewing distance, and whether the title has a dedicated implementation.
Should you buy a PS5 Pro for upgraded PSSR?
For existing PS5 Pro owners, upgraded PSSR strengthens the value of hardware they already have. There is no reason to replace a working PS5 Pro to obtain it.
Recommended Free Tools
For prospective buyers, the feature makes the Pro more appealing if you have a large 4K display, sit relatively close to the screen, use a 120Hz or VRR-capable setup, and regularly play PS5 Pro-enhanced games. The difference is easier to notice when fine detail and motion stability matter to you.
The case is weaker if you mainly use a smaller 1080p display, play titles without PS5 Pro enhancements, or prioritize price over image quality. PSSR improves the Pro’s software proposition, but it does not remove the console’s premium-price trade-off.
A new television or monitor is not required. PSSR works on the console and in compatible games; a better display simply makes its benefits easier to see. If you are upgrading your screen, look for 4K/120Hz support, HDMI 2.1, VRR, HDR performance, low input latency, and a size and viewing distance appropriate for your room. No specific display brand is required.
What the upgrade does not do
- It does not add raw GPU or CPU performance.
- It does not guarantee native 4K rendering.
- It does not force every game to run at 60fps.
- It does not automatically upgrade every PS5 game.
- It does not eliminate all reconstruction artifacts.
- It does not make a developer patch unnecessary in every compatible title.
- It is not the same as frame generation.
The practical verdict
Upgraded PSSR is a meaningful software improvement for the PS5 Pro, especially in games that previously had unstable fine detail or forced players to choose between sharpness and performance. Sony’s rollout is complete, and supported titles now include games such as Resident Evil Requiem, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, SILENT HILL 2, Crimson Desert, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
But it is best understood as a game-by-game enhancement, not a universal console-wide transformation. Update the system, update the game, check its graphics options, and judge the result while moving through the game—not from a single paused screenshot.
