Verdict: The 2023 Asus ROG Ally with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme remains a powerful, lightweight Windows gaming handheld in 2026, especially when plugged in. Its 120 Hz FreeSync display, strong Zen 4 processor and broad Windows compatibility are still compelling. Its 40 Wh battery, 16 GB shared memory and less console-like software experience are not. Buy it used or refurbished only at a substantial discount to the ROG Ally X, and only if you are comfortable carrying a charger.
Which ROG Ally is this?
This review covers the original 2023 ROG Ally equipped with AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme. It is not the cheaper regular Z1 model, the 2024 ROG Ally X, or newer Ally-family hardware.
The distinction matters. The Z1 Extreme has eight Zen 4 CPU cores, 16 threads and 12 RDNA 3 graphics compute units. The regular Z1 has six CPU cores and only four graphics compute units. Their names are similar, but their gaming performance is materially different. Asus compares the two models in its official comparison.
Asus announced US availability for the original Ally on June 13, 2023. The Z1 Extreme configuration had a historical launch-period price of $699.99, but that is not a current 2026 price or a useful used-market target by itself.

Performance: excellent when power is available
The Z1 Extreme is not simply a lightly improved version of the Steam Deck’s processor. It uses newer Zen 4 CPU cores and 12 RDNA 3 graphics compute units, compared with the original Steam Deck’s Zen 2-based APU and eight RDNA 2 compute units. In CPU-heavy workloads and at higher power limits, the Ally is substantially faster.
That advantage is most obvious when the Ally is connected to AC power. Its Turbo mode can run at up to 30 W when plugged in, giving the processor and integrated graphics considerably more room than battery operation. On battery, Turbo is limited to a lower power level, and the performance gap over the Steam Deck often becomes much less dramatic.
There is no single meaningful FPS figure for this handheld. Results depend on the game, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling, frame generation, driver, BIOS, RAM allocation, frame cap and whether the system is running on battery or AC power. Asus also warns that benchmark results vary with configuration and software maturity.
What the power modes mean
- Silent: Best for light games, emulation, streaming and desktop use where low noise and longer battery life matter more than peak performance.
- Performance: The sensible starting point for demanding battery gaming. It reduces speed and noise compared with Turbo but still consumes the small battery quickly in modern games.
- Turbo: The performance mode to use mainly near an outlet. It offers the Ally’s best frame rates, but also its highest heat, fan noise and power consumption.
For esports games, older AAA titles and many indie games, the Ally can make good use of its high-refresh display. Recent demanding AAA games usually require 720p or 900p rendering, upscaling and carefully chosen settings. The Z1 Extreme can deliver a strong handheld experience, but it is not a machine that routinely renders modern AAA games at native 1080p and 120 frames per second.
1080p, 900p or 720p?
The 1920×1080 panel is sharp, but native resolution is not always the best setting. In demanding games, 720p with FSR or Radeon Super Resolution often produces a smoother result. 900p or dynamic resolution can be a useful compromise between clarity and frame rate. Tom’s Hardware likewise found 720p more practical when performance was the priority in its testing.

- Native 1080p: The sharpest image, but the most demanding option.
- 900p or dynamic resolution: A useful middle ground for games that struggle at 1080p.
- 720p with upscaling: Often the best choice for demanding games and higher frame rates.
- Frame generation: Can increase displayed frame rates, but may add latency or visual artifacts; it does not replace real rendering performance.
Because the display supports variable refresh rate, fluctuating frame rates can look smoother than they would on a fixed-refresh panel. VRR improves presentation; it does not create additional performance.
The 120 Hz display is a real advantage
The Ally’s 7-inch 1080p screen is one of its strongest features. Asus specifies 500-nit peak brightness, full sRGB coverage, a 7 ms response time and AMD FreeSync Premium. Scrolling, desktop interaction and supported games feel more responsive than on a conventional 60 Hz handheld screen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe important qualification is that 120 Hz describes the panel’s capability, not the frame rate every game will achieve. It is most useful for esports titles, older games, indie games and situations where a title can sustain 60–120 fps. In heavier games, FreeSync is valuable because it helps smooth movement when performance varies below the panel’s maximum refresh rate.
For battery-focused use, try 60 Hz for slower games, 90 Hz where available as a middle ground, and 120 Hz for high-frame-rate games or when desktop responsiveness matters. The screen is bright and colorful, but it is an LCD. It cannot match the black levels and contrast of the OLED Steam Deck.
Battery life is the decisive weakness
The 40 Wh battery is small for the performance available from the Z1 Extreme. In Notebookcheck’s historical testing, demanding gaming lasted roughly one hour in Turbo and approximately 1.5 to 1.75 hours in Performance mode. These are review measurements from the original platform, not a guarantee for every unit. Brightness, refresh rate, game workload, background processes, firmware, drivers and battery wear all change the result.
In practical terms, treat Turbo as a plugged-in mode for long sessions. A suitable USB-C Power Delivery charger or power bank is close to essential if you plan to play demanding games away from an outlet. Lowering brightness, switching to 60 Hz, capping the frame rate and reducing the TDP can extend runtime, while game streaming from a desktop or cloud service can last longer than local AAA gaming.

For a 2026 purchase, battery condition is especially important. A used Ally that has lost capacity can turn an already short runtime into a serious limitation. Ask for battery-health information where possible and use a return policy if the seller cannot document the unit’s condition.
Windows compatibility versus SteamOS simplicity
Windows 11 is both the Ally’s greatest compatibility advantage and its largest usability compromise. It gives you native access to Steam, Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, EA App, GOG, Battle.net, mods, desktop applications and a wide range of peripherals. It is also a practical choice for external monitors and desktop-style use.
The trade-off is friction. Windows was designed for keyboard-and-mouse PCs, not primarily for thumb-driven handheld navigation. Launcher updates, notifications, account prompts, background tasks and inconsistent controller focus can interrupt the experience. Asus’s Armoury Crate SE provides a game-library front end and quick access to performance settings, but it remains a handheld layer on top of Windows rather than a purpose-built console operating system.
Compared with SteamOS, the Ally offers broader compatibility with more interface management. Sleep, resume and launcher behavior may require more troubleshooting, and Windows does not guarantee that every game will work perfectly. Anti-cheat restrictions, controller detection, authentication problems, driver regressions and games designed around keyboard and mouse can still cause problems.

Design, controls and portability
The original Ally is notably compact and light. Tom’s Hardware measured it at approximately 1.34 lb, compared with about 1.47 lb for the Steam Deck, and described it as smaller in every dimension. That makes it easy to carry and less tiring in a bag.
The smaller body is not automatically better for every player. Comfort depends on hand size, grip preference and session length. When evaluating a used unit, check the analog sticks for drift and uneven dead zones, test every trigger and face button, inspect the D-pad with a retro or fighting game, and verify that the rear buttons are not being activated accidentally. Also consider speaker quality, vibration, screen glare and whether the grips remain comfortable after an extended session.
Rank #4
The Ally has no built-in kickstand. Its top-mounted USB-C connection is convenient for docking but can make cable management awkward while playing. The compact chassis is a portability strength, but buyers with large hands may prefer the broader grip of a larger handheld such as the Lenovo Legion Go.
Storage, upgrades and external displays
The included 512 GB SSD fills quickly once several modern PC games are installed. The internal drive is a replaceable M.2 2230 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, so storage can be upgraded, but the process requires preparation. Plan for cloning or Windows recovery media, confirm the physical 2230 form factor and account for the cost and availability of suitable drives.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The UHS-II microSD reader is useful for indie games, older PC titles, emulation and media. A card is not a universal replacement for the internal SSD, particularly for large games with frequent updates. Test card performance and reliability separately rather than assuming every microSD card will behave like the internal drive.
The USB-C port supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 and DisplayPort 1.4. A compatible dock can connect an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, Ethernet and other USB devices, turning the Ally into a small Windows desktop. The proprietary ROG XG Mobile interface also supports compatible external graphics hardware, but the accessories are expensive and the ecosystem is less flexible than a desktop PC with a standard PCIe slot. Do not buy the Ally primarily for eGPU expansion unless you already understand the accessory cost and compatibility.

ROG Ally X
The Ally X is the most direct upgrade. It retains the Z1 Extreme family and 120 Hz 1080p display while adding 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 1 TB SSD and a substantially larger battery. Those changes address the original Ally’s most important weaknesses: endurance, storage and the limited shared 16 GB memory pool.
The original Ally still makes sense if it is meaningfully cheaper, compactness is important and most play happens near an outlet. If the price gap is small, the Ally X is the safer Windows handheld purchase for frequent travel or long unplugged sessions. See Asus’s official Ally X specifications.

Steam Deck OLED
The Steam Deck OLED is the better fit for Steam-focused buyers who value OLED contrast, handheld-oriented software, straightforward suspend/resume and console-like navigation. The Ally is the better fit for readers who need Windows launchers, PC Game Pass, Epic, EA, Battle.net or Windows-only applications without additional setup.
Neither is a universal performance winner. The answer changes with the game, power mode, resolution, operating system preference and price. The Steam Deck OLED’s display and software experience can outweigh the Ally’s higher plugged-in performance for the right user. Valve’s official product page is here.
Lenovo Legion Go
The Legion Go is relevant if you prefer a larger display, detachable controllers and a built-in kickstand. Its larger design is less portable than the Ally, and it still carries Windows’s setup and launcher friction. Exact model specifications, regional availability and current pricing should be checked before buying.
Used-buying checklist
Before buying a used or refurbished original Ally, verify:
- It is the Z1 Extreme model, not the regular Z1.
- Battery health and charging behavior.
- Analog sticks, triggers, D-pad, buttons, speakers and vibration.
- Screen brightness, touch response, dead pixels and cosmetic damage.
- USB-C charging, video output and included charger.
- SSD health, capacity and whether the drive has been replaced.
- MicroSD-reader behavior and firmware or driver status.
- Whether a return window or warranty is included.
Final recommendation
The original ROG Ally Z1 Extreme is still a capable handheld PC, but its 2026 value is entirely price-sensitive. It is a strong choice for buyers who want a light Windows device, broad launcher compatibility and excellent plugged-in performance, and who are willing to tune resolution and power limits. The 120 Hz VRR display remains genuinely useful even when games run below 120 fps.
It is a poor choice for buyers expecting long unplugged AAA sessions, effortless console-style software, OLED contrast or reliable native 1080p/120 fps in modern games. Choose the Ally X when the price difference is reasonable and battery life matters. Choose the Steam Deck OLED when SteamOS simplicity and OLED quality matter more than Windows compatibility.
For everyone else, the rule is simple: buy the original Ally only when its discount is large enough to compensate for the 40 Wh battery, 16 GB memory configuration and older chassis—and only after checking the specific unit’s battery health and warranty.
