Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDauntless does not have one universal PC launch fix. The correct solution depends on where startup fails: Epic Games Launcher, Easy Anti-Cheat, the game window, graphics initialization, login, or the game itself. Use the symptom-based steps below, starting with the least destructive option.
Fastest path: check service status, restart Windows and Epic Games Launcher, verify Dauntless files, repair Easy Anti-Cheat, disable overlays, and then investigate drivers, Windows Security, and system compatibility.
First, identify where Dauntless fails
| What happens | Start here |
|---|---|
| Epic Games Launcher will not open or sign in | Check Epic service status, restart Windows, update or clear the launcher cache. |
| Epic opens, but clicking Launch does nothing | Verify Dauntless files, repair Easy Anti-Cheat, then check antivirus and overlays. |
| Epic says Dauntless is running, but no window appears | Close stuck Epic, Dauntless, and Easy Anti-Cheat processes, restart Windows, and verify the installation. |
| Easy Anti-Cheat appears and then closes | Repair Easy Anti-Cheat from the official Dauntless installation and inspect security software. |
| The screen turns black or white | Disable overlays, check the selected GPU, test fullscreen-optimization settings, and update or roll back the graphics driver. |
| The game reaches the menu but crashes later | Disable monitoring tools, check driver stability and temperatures, reduce settings, and test with a clean boot. |
| You see a login or connection error | Check Epic and Dauntless service notices before changing local files. |
These symptoms can look similar while having different causes. Reinstalling the game, for example, will not fix an Epic outage, a blocked anti-cheat service, or a defective graphics driver.
Five-minute fix path
- Check the Epic Games service status and current notices from the Dauntless support center.
- Exit Dauntless and quit Epic Games Launcher from the Windows system tray.
- Restart Windows. If Epic still reports that the game is running, use Task Manager to close only clearly identified Epic, Dauntless, or Easy Anti-Cheat processes that remain stuck.
- Update Epic Games Launcher and install pending Windows updates, then restart again.
- In Epic, open Library, open Dauntless’s three-dot menu, select Manage, choose Verify, and wait for the repair to finish.
- Disable Discord, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD, Steam, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, Overwolf, recording, RGB, and performance-monitoring overlays.
- If the failure remains, repair Easy Anti-Cheat from Dauntless’s installation folder.
Epic’s launcher guidance covers server status, updates, verification-related launch problems, cache clearing, administrator permissions, graphics drivers, fullscreen optimization, and background applications. See Epic’s official launcher troubleshooting guide.

1. Check whether Epic or Dauntless is having an outage
Before modifying your installation, check Epic’s status page and Dauntless/Phoenix Labs support notices. Also test whether you can sign in to Epic in a browser and whether another Epic game launches.
- Epic will not sign in: focus on Epic authentication, network, or service issues.
- Epic works but only Dauntless fails: continue with game-specific repairs.
- Several players report the same failure after a patch: local reinstalls may not help until a server-side or game update issue is corrected.
A green status page does not rule out an account-specific problem, a regional routing issue, a firewall block, or corrupted local files.
2. Restart Epic and Windows cleanly
Closing the launcher window may leave Epic, Dauntless, or Easy Anti-Cheat running in the background. Exit Epic from its system-tray icon, then restart Windows. If the game remains listed as running, open Task Manager and end only processes that are clearly associated with Epic Games, Dauntless, or Easy Anti-Cheat. Do not terminate unknown Windows processes.
3. Update Epic Games Launcher and Windows
Use Epic’s restart or update control when it appears, and install pending Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update. Restart after either update. A launcher, driver, or security update that has not completed can create misleading launch failures.
Epic’s labels can change between launcher versions, so follow the current wording shown in your installation rather than an old guide’s screenshots.
4. Verify Dauntless files
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library.
- Find Dauntless and open its three-dot menu.
- Select Manage, then Verify.
- Allow the scan and download to finish without interrupting it.
- Restart Epic and test Dauntless before applying more changes.
Verification can replace missing or corrupted game files. It does not normally repair a graphics driver, Windows component, server outage, account problem, or blocked anti-cheat service. If verification completes quickly and the same crash returns, do not repeat it indefinitely; move to Easy Anti-Cheat, drivers, overlays, and security software.
5. Repair Easy Anti-Cheat
If Easy Anti-Cheat opens and closes, or Dauntless disappears before its window appears, anti-cheat is a likely failure layer—not necessarily the root cause.

- Open Dauntless’s installation location through Epic’s Manage options.
- Locate the Easy Anti-Cheat setup program supplied with the game.
- Run it and choose its repair option if one is available.
- Restart Windows and launch Dauntless through Epic Games Launcher.
Executable names and menu labels can vary by build. Do not download replacement DLLs, unofficial installers, or “fixed” anti-cheat files. Do not bypass or disable anti-cheat. If the official setup tool reports a permission failure, run the setup tool or Epic as administrator once as a diagnostic step, then investigate the underlying permissions or security block.
For current launch-error guidance, use the Dauntless technical support section rather than relying on unverified legacy error-code lists.
6. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
Epic lists clearing its launcher cache as a remedy for corrupted interface, authentication, download, or launch state. Follow the current instructions in Epic’s support documentation for the exact cache folders and current Windows path.
Do not confuse the launcher cache with Dauntless game files or the graphics shader cache. Clearing the launcher cache does not verify or reinstall the game.
7. Try administrator mode, then diagnose permissions
Right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut and select Run as administrator. Test Dauntless once.
If this changes the result, investigate folder permissions, Windows Controlled Folder Access, antivirus blocking, or a damaged installation. Administrator mode does not fix an outage, unsupported hardware, or a defective driver, and permanently running every game as administrator can hide the real problem and weakens normal security boundaries.
8. Disable overlays and background utilities
Overlays inject into the game and can cause black screens, startup crashes, or crashes after entering the world. Temporarily disable:

- Discord overlay and Xbox Game Bar
- NVIDIA App or AMD overlay
- Steam overlay when another launcher is active
- MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, Overwolf, and other game integrations
- Screen recorders, performance monitors, RGB tools, and motherboard utilities
- Third-party antivirus gaming modes or exploit-protection features
Use a controlled test: disable one item, restart Dauntless, and note the result. If the problem changes, re-enable items one at a time to identify the conflict. Do not permanently disable all security software.
9. Update or roll back the graphics driver
If the problem started after a driver update, try the previous stable driver or the installer’s clean-install option. If the driver is old, update it from the GPU manufacturer—not a third-party driver-updater site. The newest driver is not automatically the best driver for every system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On laptops, check both the laptop manufacturer and GPU manufacturer. In Windows graphics settings, confirm that Dauntless is assigned to the dedicated GPU when the system has integrated and discrete graphics.
10. Fix black or white screens
- After a game or driver update, wait briefly on the first launch; do not immediately kill the process if it appears busy.
- Disable all overlays and recording tools.
- Verify Dauntless files.
- Confirm that the dedicated GPU is selected.
- Update or roll back the graphics driver.
- As a test, disable fullscreen optimizations for the relevant game executable: right-click it, choose Properties > Compatibility, and enable Disable fullscreen optimizations.
- Record whether the failure occurs before the splash screen, after pressing Play, or at login.
Fullscreen-optimization changes are diagnostic, not guaranteed fixes. Restore the original setting if they have no effect.
11. Check antivirus, firewall, and Windows Security
Security software can quarantine the game executable, block Easy Anti-Cheat, prevent Epic from writing its cache, or restrict authentication.
- Check antivirus quarantine and protection history.
- Restore a file only when you can confirm it belongs to the official Epic/Dauntless installation.
- Check whether Controlled Folder Access blocked Epic or Dauntless.
- Add a temporary exception only for the official installation if necessary.
- Remove the exception if it does not help.
Never whitelist an unofficial executable or downloaded DLL, and do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection.
12. Check current requirements and the installation drive
Use the current Dauntless technical support section for minimum and recommended requirements. Old wiki pages may list obsolete Windows versions or hardware information. Current Windows support, GPU feature support, VRAM, RAM, driver compatibility, and available disk space should be checked against the current first-party listing.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee stability. Also check whether the game is installed on an external, nearly full, or failing drive. Mac and Linux should not be treated as supported unless current Dauntless documentation explicitly says so.
13. Repair Windows system files
For persistent launcher or system-component errors, run System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run the command and let it finish.
- Restart Windows and test Dauntless.
This is a Windows repair step, not a guaranteed Dauntless fix. Epic includes it in its broader launcher troubleshooting and reinstallation guidance.
14. Use a clean boot only after simpler tests
A clean boot can prove that startup software is conflicting with Dauntless, but it is more disruptive than disabling one overlay.
- Record your existing startup and service settings.
- Perform a Windows clean boot using Microsoft’s current instructions.
- Test Dauntless.
- If it launches, re-enable services and startup items in groups until the conflict is isolated.
- Restore essential security and hardware services.
A clean boot identifies a software conflict; it does not prove that Dauntless itself is defective.

Reinstalling is reasonable when verification repeatedly fails, files remain corrupted, or the installation was interrupted. It should not be the first step.
Before reinstalling, confirm that you have checked the outage status, verified files, repaired Easy Anti-Cheat, cleared the launcher cache, disabled overlays, checked security software, and reviewed drivers and disk space.

- Restart Windows.
- Install to a normal local NTFS drive with sufficient free space.
- Do not move a partially installed game between drives while troubleshooting.
- Let Epic complete installation and any verification before launching.
Reinstalling the game is different from reinstalling Epic Games Launcher. It should not be treated as a way to repair Epic itself or a server problem.
16. Reinstall Epic Games Launcher only as a last resort
If Epic itself will not open after status checks, updates, cache clearing, permissions testing, and background-app troubleshooting, use Epic’s current launcher-reinstallation instructions. Read the warning carefully: reinstalling Epic Games Launcher can remove installed titles. Record your installed-game locations first and do not delete unrelated Epic games or account data casually.
Epic’s current troubleshooting information is available at Epic Games Support.
Symptom guide: what to do next
| Symptom | Likely layer | First action | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launcher will not open | Epic, cache, Windows, or security software | Check status, restart, update, clear cache | Epic remains unusable after its official troubleshooting steps |
| Launch does nothing | Game files, anti-cheat, permissions, or overlays | Verify files and repair anti-cheat | The same failure persists with overlays disabled |
| “Already running” with no window | Stuck process or failed startup | Close identified stuck processes and restart Windows | It recurs after verification and anti-cheat repair |
| Black or white screen | GPU, overlay, fullscreen, or corrupted files | Disable overlays and check the GPU/driver | The exact failure point is reproducible |
| Anti-Cheat error | Anti-cheat service, permissions, or security software | Repair the official anti-cheat installation | The official repair tool returns an error code |
| Crash after entering Ramsgate or a hunt | Driver, overlay, temperature, memory, or settings | Disable monitoring tools and check driver stability | It remains reproducible after a clean boot |

Frequently Asked Questions
Will reinstalling Dauntless delete my account progress?
Reinstalling the local game files is not the same as deleting an Epic account. Do not delete account data or unrelated Epic installations, and contact official support if you are concerned about account-specific progress.
Should I always run Dauntless as administrator?
No. Test administrator mode once for a permissions problem, then investigate security software and folder permissions rather than using elevated privileges permanently.
Should I download a missing DLL to fix Dauntless?
No. Use Epic verification, the official Easy Anti-Cheat repair tool, Windows repair tools, and official driver sources. Random DLL downloads create security and compatibility risks.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
