Sony’s PlayStation PC overlay is a useful identity layer for selected PC games, not a PlayStation launcher or Steam replacement. It brings PlayStation friends, trophies, profiles, invitations, and account settings into supported games. For PS5 owners and trophy hunters, that can make linking a PlayStation account worthwhile. For everyone else, it remains a small companion feature with limited reach.
The overlay debuted on PC with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on May 16, 2024. Later releases, including Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, show that Sony has continued using it, but PlayStation’s own support documentation still describes the feature as available in “some” PC games—not as a universal Sony PC platform.
What is the PlayStation PC overlay?
The overlay is an in-game interface embedded in selected PlayStation PC releases. It runs on top of games bought through Steam or the Epic Games Store, adding PlayStation account features without replacing either storefront.
It is separate from the PlayStation Accessories app, PlayStation App, Remote Play, PlayStation Plus cloud streaming, and Windows tools such as Xbox Game Bar or Nvidia’s overlay. It is also not a standalone Sony launcher with its own universal library.

At launch, the overlay contained five main areas:
- Search: Find PlayStation players and send friend requests.
- Friends: View online and offline PlayStation friends.
- Trophies: View and earn PlayStation trophies in supported games.
- Profile: See your PlayStation profile and wider trophy history.
- Settings: Manage account, privacy, blocked players, support, and notification settings.
Supported games can also expose invitations to friends on PC or PS5. Whether an invitation works depends on the game’s multiplayer and cross-play implementation.

How to open the overlay
In a supported game, press:
Shift + F1Some games also provide a PlayStation overlay option in their own menus. The usual setup is:
- Launch a supported PlayStation PC game.
- Sign in to, or create, a PlayStation account when prompted.
- Start the game and press Shift + F1.
- Choose Friends, Trophies, Profile, Search, or Settings.
If nothing happens, first confirm that the title supports the overlay and that account linking finished successfully. Restarting the game after linking may help. Also check the game’s own menus, since the feature may not be exposed solely through the shortcut. Other software can intercept keyboard shortcuts, and Steam, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, and GPU overlays can make it difficult to identify which interface is open.

How PlayStation trophies work on PC
PlayStation trophies are the overlay’s most meaningful feature. In Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, PC trophy progress is designed to synchronize with the same PlayStation account used on PS5. Earned trophies can therefore appear on the player’s broader PlayStation profile.

These trophies remain separate from Steam and Epic Games achievements. A supported game may award a PlayStation trophy and a Steam or Epic achievement for the same accomplishment; the overlay does not merge those systems into one list.
Do not assume every Sony PC release supports PlayStation trophies. Trophy and overlay support must be checked game by game.
Is a PlayStation account required?
There is no universal answer. The requirement depends on the game and the feature being used.
For Ghost of Tsushima, Nixxes says players can complete the single-player campaign and earn Steam or Epic achievements without signing in to a PlayStation account. A PlayStation account is required for the PlayStation overlay, PlayStation trophies, and Legends multiplayer. The documented distinction is important:
- Playing single-player: May be possible without PSN.
- Using the PlayStation overlay: Requires PlayStation sign-in.
- Earning PlayStation trophies: Requires the relevant PlayStation account connection.
- Playing supported multiplayer modes: May require PSN and the game’s own cross-play services.
In other words, “PSN is optional” does not mean every PlayStation feature is available without PSN. Check the requirements for the individual game.

Can PC players invite PS5 friends?
In supported titles, open the overlay with Shift + F1, choose Friends, open a friend’s profile, and select Invite to Game. The friend receives the invitation through notifications.
This does not create cross-play where a game does not support it. The title must provide a compatible multiplayer mode and, where applicable, PC-to-PS5 cross-play. Ghost of Tsushima Legends is an example of a mode built for PC-to-console play; a single-player game such as Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered cannot gain multiplayer invitations merely because it includes the overlay.
What the overlay does not provide
The launch implementation was deliberately narrow. It did not include a full PC storefront, library manager, or desktop launcher. It also did not replace PlayStation’s complete messaging and party-chat experience. Players commonly needed in-game voice chat or Discord instead.
That limitation should be framed carefully in 2026: the original implementation lacked those broader communication tools, and Sony’s support material does not establish the overlay as a universal party-chat client. Features can vary by game and later version.
The overlay also does not replace Steam. Steam remains responsible for the game purchase, installation, updates, achievements, and its broader PC ecosystem. Sony’s layer adds PlayStation identity and selected social features on top.

The practical conclusion is straightforward: Sony built a thin identity, social, and trophy layer—not a Steam competitor.
Should you link your PlayStation account?
Link it if you:
- Own a PS5 and want PC and console trophies on one profile.
- Care about PlayStation trophy hunting.
- Play Sony multiplayer releases with console friends.
- Want PlayStation invitations and profile features in supported games.
- Want title-specific account-linking bonuses where offered.
For Ghost of Tsushima, Nixxes documents optional benefits from linking an account, but those bonuses are game-specific and should not be treated as a universal overlay reward.
Skipping it is reasonable if you:
- Only play single-player games and do not care about PlayStation trophies.
- Prefer not to connect another account to Steam or Epic.
- Already use Steam and Discord for friends and communication.
- Dislike duplicate trophy and achievement notifications.
- Are playing a title with little or no meaningful overlay functionality.
Common problems and fixes
The shortcut does nothing
Check that the game supports the overlay, that you are signed in, and that account linking completed. Restart the game after signing in. Look for a PlayStation option in the game’s menus, and temporarily check whether another overlay or utility is intercepting Shift + F1.
You can play, but PlayStation trophies are missing
This can be expected when a game allows offline or account-free single-player access but reserves PlayStation trophies for signed-in users. Confirm that the same PlayStation account is being used on PC and PS5, that the title supports PC trophies, and that the game connected to PSN successfully.
You see multiple notifications
Steam, PlayStation, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, and graphics software can all display pop-ups. The original launch coverage noted limitations around disabling some PlayStation startup notifications; current behavior may vary by game and build.

Invitations are unavailable
The overlay cannot add multiplayer to a single-player game. Confirm that the title supports the relevant mode, cross-play, and invitations between PC and PS5.
Has Sony’s overlay improved since 2024?
The original “simple start” assessment remains fair, but it is no longer a complete current review if it ignores later releases. Sony continued the model in games including Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, which advertises PlayStation overlay and trophy support on PC.
That demonstrates continued use, not a complete catalog or a full Sony PC ecosystem. Sony’s wording still limits availability to some PC games, so readers should verify support for each purchase rather than assume that every PlayStation-published PC title includes it.
The overlay does show Sony’s interest in carrying PlayStation identity onto PC. It does not, by itself, prove that Sony will build a full PC storefront, introduce a universal social client, or follow any particular future release strategy.
Verdict
Sony’s PlayStation PC overlay is worthwhile for the audience it targets: existing PlayStation users who want their trophies, friends, profiles, and selected invitations to follow them into Sony games on PC. It is lightweight and avoids forcing another full launcher onto Windows.
But its limitations are substantial. Support is selective, Steam or Epic still handles distribution, communication is not a complete replacement for PSN or Discord, and duplicate notifications can be annoying. As of 2026, it remains a useful companion layer and a credible foundation—not a serious alternative to Steam, Xbox Game Bar, or Discord as a complete PC platform.
For most players, the decision is simple: link your account if PlayStation trophies and cross-platform friends matter to you; skip it if you only want to play the game and already have your PC social setup covered.
