“psizewizres.dll” error messages

psizewizres.dll is an Autodesk file, not a normal Windows component. It is identified as the Autodesk Hardcopy Paper Size Wizard Resource DLL, part of the Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem.
The 60-second answer
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Autodesk program that displays the error.
- Close the Autodesk application.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not work, repeat the process and select Reinstall.
For newer Autodesk installers, Repair may not be available. In that case, uninstall the product and reinstall it using the original media or Autodesk Account.

Do not download psizewizres.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32. That can install an incorrect or unsafe file and does not repair the Autodesk installation that should own it.
What is psizewizres.dll?
psizewizres.dll is a resource DLL used by Autodesk software, particularly older AutoCAD-based products or Mechanical Desktop installations. Its name refers to the paper-size wizard used by Autodesk’s hardcopy or plotting subsystem.
It is:
- An Autodesk application file
- Published by Autodesk, Inc.
- Associated with the Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem
- Commonly identified by public file inventories as a 32-bit DLL
The exact Autodesk product cannot be determined from the filename alone. Several legacy Autodesk products could have installed related components, and multiple Autodesk versions may coexist on one computer.
This is not normally:
- A Windows system file
- A Microsoft Visual C++ file
- A DirectX component
- A .NET component
- A standalone printer-driver file
The file may be involved when an Autodesk application starts, plots, or configures paper sizes. If the error appears only during plotting, the Autodesk installation and printer or plotter configuration both deserve attention.
Why the error appears
The most common causes are:
- The Autodesk file was deleted or damaged.
- An update or reinstall stopped before completing.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Cleanup software removed an old Autodesk component.
- The application is loading an older installation from the wrong shortcut.
- A dependency required by the DLL is missing.
- The old Autodesk release is incompatible with the current Windows version.
- The installer itself is corrupt or blocked.
The message “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that psizewizres.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting that a dependency required by that DLL could not be loaded.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
This is the most likely solution because Repair restores missing application files from the product’s installation source.
Classic Autodesk installer
- Save your work and close every Autodesk process.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Find the Autodesk product that fails to start.
- Right-click it and select Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the Autodesk application again.
A successful repair should restore the DLL beside the Autodesk executable or inside one of the product’s installed component folders. The exact folder varies by product and release.
If Repair is unavailable
Some newer Autodesk products use an installer that provides only removal and reinstall options.

- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Locate the Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the product installer through Autodesk Account or use trusted original installation media.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Restart Windows after installation completes.
Do not install a different Autodesk product merely because its name is similar. Identify the application shown in the error or the shortcut that launches it.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an old DLL after an update or scan.
Windows Security
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
psizewizres.dllor the Autodesk installation. - Inspect the reported path and detection details.
Restore the file only if all of the following are true:
- The file was inside the legitimate Autodesk installation directory.
- The Autodesk product came from trusted installation media or Autodesk Account.
- The detection is clearly a false positive.
- You will immediately repair or reinstall Autodesk afterward.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If the file is restored and is quarantined again, leave it quarantined and reinstall the Autodesk product from official media instead.

Fix 3: Confirm the application and DLL paths
A repair can appear successful while the shortcut still launches a different Autodesk installation.
- Right-click the Autodesk shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field.
- Note the executable’s full path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Search the same Autodesk installation directory for
psizewizres.dll.
If the file exists in another Autodesk version’s folder, do not copy it manually. The versions may use different dependencies or resource layouts. Repair the installation referenced by the failing shortcut.
If the error occurs after plotting or changing paper sizes, also check the Autodesk plotter configuration and installed printer driver. A missing paper size can be a separate plotter-support problem rather than proof that the DLL itself is missing.
Fix 4: Check whether a dependency is missing
A 32-bit Autodesk application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs 32-bit DLL dependencies. Installing a 64-bit runtime does not automatically satisfy a 32-bit application.

First, repair Autodesk rather than guessing at runtimes. If the Autodesk installer or Event Viewer identifies a Microsoft runtime dependency, install the matching x86 or x64 package from Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
To inspect the event:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error created when the Autodesk program failed.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, and any named dependency.
If Event Viewer names another DLL, repair that dependency or the Autodesk installation rather than downloading psizewizres.dll separately.
Fix 5: Reinstall the Autodesk product completely
Use a complete reinstall when Repair fails, the installation media is damaged, or the Autodesk program has been partially removed.
- Back up Autodesk templates, profiles, drawings, custom plot styles, and other work-related files.
- Uninstall the affected Autodesk product from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Temporarily close unnecessary background applications.
- Download the installer through Autodesk Account or use verified original media.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation without interrupting it.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application before restoring custom files or extensions.
If the installation repeatedly fails, security software, restricted permissions, corrupt installation media, or a damaged Windows user profile may be involved. Try the installation from a new local administrator account.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
SFC and DISM do not normally recreate third-party Autodesk files. Use them when Windows has broader corruption, the Autodesk installer will not run, or other Windows components are also failing.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry Autodesk Repair or Reinstall.
Microsoft documents DISM repair and System File Checker.
Running these commands repeatedly will not replace a missing Autodesk DLL if the Autodesk installation itself is incomplete.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Display adapters.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a printer or plotter, install the driver from the printer manufacturer or use the driver supplied by your organization. Do not use a random driver package.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which installed drivers are outdated instead of making you inspect many entries manually; its driver installation requires the full version, and it cannot replace repairing the Autodesk product itself.
Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 by default
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose the COM registration function DllRegisterServer. psizewizres.dll is identified as a resource DLL, not a normal self-registering COM server.
Running commands such as these is therefore unlikely to help:
regsvr32 psizewizres.dll
It may produce an error about an entry point or registration failure. That does not prove the DLL is corrupt.
Use regsvr32 only when documentation for the specific Autodesk component explicitly requires registration. It cannot restore a missing file or repair a missing dependency.
Fix 9: Consider compatibility for very old Autodesk software
Some legacy AutoCAD releases were never supported on modern Windows versions. Restoring the missing DLL may solve the immediate file error but still leave the application unable to run correctly.
If the Autodesk product is old:
- Identify its exact release from Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Check its Windows compatibility requirements.
- Install all available updates for that product.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Use compatibility settings only as a temporary test.
- Avoid changing settings permanently until you confirm the application behaves correctly.
For a legacy product that cannot run reliably on Windows 10 or Windows 11, use a supported older Windows environment or a properly isolated virtual machine. Keep that environment offline or tightly controlled when possible, and do not use it for ordinary web browsing.
Should you download psizewizres.dll separately?
No. A separately downloaded DLL may be:
- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- Modified or malicious
- Missing its required dependencies
- Intended for a different Autodesk release
There is no verified official standalone Autodesk download for this file. Use Autodesk Account, the original Autodesk installation media, or the product’s Repair/Reinstall option.

The file’s presence alone also does not prove that it is safe. Check its location, digital signature, and parent installation. A legitimate copy should belong to the Autodesk application that is requesting it, not to a random Windows folder.
Should it be copied to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. psizewizres.dll is an application DLL and should normally remain in the Autodesk installation directory or a component directory used by that Autodesk product.

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows uses its own application directories and compatible 32-bit dependencies. Moving the file to a system folder can create conflicts and still may not make the application find it.
When System Restore is appropriate
System Restore is a fallback when:
- The error began after a recent system change.
- A restore point exists from before the failure.
- You do not have usable Autodesk installation media.
To try it:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the error.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
Back up important work first. System Restore should not replace a proper Autodesk reinstall when official installation media is available.
FAQ
Is psizewizres.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem components.
Which Autodesk product installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact product. Older AutoCAD-based products and Mechanical Desktop installations are plausible owners.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public file inventories commonly identify it as a 32-bit DLL, but those listings are not a universal Autodesk specification. Repair the owning application rather than choosing an architecture based only on a download listing.
Why does “module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
A dependency required by psizewizres.dll may be missing. Check the full path and Event Viewer’s Application log.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?
Only if the Autodesk installer or Event Viewer identifies a missing Visual C++ dependency. It is not a guaranteed fix for a missing Autodesk file.
