wlsrvc.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Windows Sidebar and Desktop Gadgets, not a general-purpose gaming or Visual C++ runtime. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, an error naming this file usually comes from obsolete software, a leftover Sidebar startup entry, or a damaged legacy installation rather than a missing modern Windows feature.
What this file actually does
The file belongs to the Windows Sidebar component used by Windows Vista and Windows 7. Its usual location on those systems is:
%ProgramFiles%Windows Sidebarwlsrvc.dll
It is associated with other Sidebar files, including:
sidebar.exesbdrop.dllatl.dll
The file description may appear as Windows Live Services, and its publisher should be Microsoft Corporation. That description does not mean the file is part of a current Windows Live, DirectX, .NET, Visual C++ Redistributable, or gaming runtime.

Microsoft’s documented Sidebar restoration procedure specifically registers atl.dll, sbdrop.dll, and wlsrvc.dll from an elevated Command Prompt. You can review the original procedure in Microsoft’s Windows Sidebar repair instructions.
Windows Sidebar was a Vista and Windows 7 feature. Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not provide the original Sidebar component as a normal Windows feature. Therefore, if a current PC reports that wlsrvc.dll is missing, replacing the DLL is usually the wrong first step.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Sidebar will not start on Vista or Windows 7 | Broken DLL registration | Register the three Sidebar components |
sidebar.exe is missing or fails immediately |
Damaged or incomplete Sidebar files | Check the Sidebar folder, then repair Windows |
| “The program can’t start because wlsrvc.dll is missing” | Missing file, damaged component, or obsolete software dependency | Identify the program shown in the error |
| “The specified module could not be found” | Missing wlsrvc.dll or one of its dependencies |
Check the file path and repair the component |
DllRegisterServer in wlsrvc.dll failed |
Wrong path, missing dependency, insufficient permission, or incompatible file | Use an administrator prompt and verify the source |
| The message appears after signing in to Windows 10 or 11 | Old Sidebar startup entry or obsolete application | Disable or remove the old startup item |
| A game or modern application reports the file | Incorrect, obsolete, or damaged application installation | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Possible false detection or malware-related damage | Verify the path and Microsoft signature before restoring |
Reported messages can vary. Common variants include “wlsrvc.dll was not found,” “wlsrvc.dll is missing from your computer,” “Error loading wlsrvc.dll,” and “wlsrvc.dll is missing or corrupted.” The exact wording depends on the program making the request.
Fix 1: Identify which program is requesting the file
Before changing Windows files, find the executable that produces the message. This determines whether you are repairing an old Sidebar installation or an unrelated application.
If the error appears during startup
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries referring to Sidebar, gadgets, an old utility, or software you no longer use.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the error disappears, the disabled program or startup entry was requesting wlsrvc.dll. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, remove the obsolete application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps rather than copying a legacy DLL into a Windows folder.
If the error appears when launching a program
Read the title bar and message carefully. It may identify the application. You can also check Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the message appeared.
- Note the application name and path.
If only one old program requests wlsrvc.dll, repair or reinstall that program from its original publisher. A current application should not normally depend on a private Windows Sidebar component.
Fix 2: Check the original Sidebar location
Do not download a replacement yet. First determine whether the file exists in the location where Microsoft placed it.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
text
%ProgramFiles%Windows Sidebar
- Press Enter.
- Look for
wlsrvc.dll. - Also check for
sidebar.exeandsbdrop.dll.
If the file exists, right-click it, select Properties, and review:
- The Location field
- The Digital Signatures tab, if present
- The listed signer and certificate details
A file in the Windows Sidebar directory is more consistent with the expected component than a copy found in a random application folder or downloaded archive. A present file is not automatically authentic, so verify its location and signature before registering it.
If %ProgramFiles%Windows Sidebar does not exist on Windows 10 or Windows 11, that is normally expected. Those versions do not include the original Vista/Windows 7 Sidebar as a standard feature.

Fix 3: Re-register the Sidebar components on Vista or Windows 7
Use this repair only when the computer is actually running Windows Vista or Windows 7, and the Sidebar files are present. It is also appropriate when a genuine legacy Sidebar installation stopped working after a system change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run these commands one at a time:
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%Windows Sidebarsbdrop.dll"
regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%Windows Sidebarwlsrvc.dll"
A successful command displays a message stating that registration succeeded. Continue to the next command only after the previous one finishes.
When all three commands complete, restart Windows and try Sidebar again.
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It works only when the DLL provides the required registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft specifically documents it for this Sidebar repair scenario. The command is not a reason to register every DLL in System32.
If registration fails
Check the following:
- You opened Command Prompt as administrator.
- The path contains the actual Windows installation location.
- The file exists at the path shown in the command.
- You used matching quotation marks around the path.
- The error is not reporting a missing dependency.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wlsrvc.dll itself is absent. It can indicate that a dependency required by the DLL is missing.

Use the registration method documented for the installed Sidebar component and avoid replacing files with downloads from another architecture. Vista and Windows 7 builds, languages, service packs, and architectures can differ.
Fix 4: Repair Windows system files
Use this step when wlsrvc.dll is missing from an otherwise intact Windows installation, several Windows components are failing, or registration reports damaged dependencies.
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, run DISM first and SFC second.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the permission prompt.
- Enter:
bat
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Press Enter.
- Wait until the command completes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store used by system-file repair. It may appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window simply because the percentage does not change immediately.
Run System File Checker
In the same administrator window, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and allow the scan to finish.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected system files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run DISM again if necessary, and repeat SFC.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: restart Windows and try the scan again from Safe Mode or an appropriate recovery environment.
Microsoft explains the DISM and SFC repair sequence.
SFC and DISM can repair files belonging to the installed Windows image. They cannot recreate a legacy Sidebar feature that the current Windows version never included. If the machine is running Windows 10 or Windows 11 and the only problem is an old Sidebar reference, system repair may report no problems because the operating system is behaving normally.

When manually identifying damaged components becomes difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC commands remain the appropriate first repair path.
Fix 5: Check Windows Update and the installed application
If the error belongs to a third-party program, Windows repair may not fix it. Repair the program that displays the message.
Repair an installed application
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If the error remains, select Reset only if you understand that it can remove the application’s stored settings.
If Repair and Reset are unavailable, uninstall the program and reinstall it from its official publisher or original installation media. This is the definitive repair when a specific application owns the dependency.
Install pending Windows updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the application again.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a registry cleaner solely because an automated DLL page recommends it. There is no verified basis for treating wlsrvc.dll as one of those runtime files.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy. Do not disable antivirus protection to force an unknown DLL into Windows.

- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
wlsrvc.dll.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these conditions are met:
- The detected path is the legitimate Windows Sidebar directory or a Windows component-store location.
- The file identifies Microsoft Corporation as its signer.
- A full malware scan finds no broader compromise.
- You are repairing a Vista or Windows 7 Sidebar installation that genuinely needs the component.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unfamiliar program folder, do not restore it automatically. Delete or quarantine it and investigate the program that placed it there.
Run a full scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. Microsoft also provides guidance for using Windows Security and Defender Offline.
Fix 7: Remove obsolete Sidebar references on Windows 10 and 11
If the error appears after signing in to Windows 10 or Windows 11, restoring wlsrvc.dll is usually not the correct solution. The computer may contain a startup entry left by an old Sidebar installation or gadget package.

Windows 8 and later do not contain the original Vista/Windows 7 Sidebar as a normal built-in feature. If you need desktop widgets, use a supported feature or application designed for your current Windows version rather than restoring an old system component.

Use recovery tools when the file was working previously and the problem began after a failed update, cleanup, malware incident, or system change.
System Restore
- Press the Windows key.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is more relevant to an older Vista or Windows 7 Sidebar installation than to a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer that never contained Sidebar.

If DISM and SFC cannot repair an affected legacy system, use matching Windows installation media, System Restore, or an in-place repair installation where supported. A repair source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture. Microsoft documents repair-source guidance for Windows images.
Do not download wlsrvc.dll from a DLL website
A standalone download can have the wrong:
- Windows build
- Architecture
- Language
- File version
- Digital signature
- Dependency set
It may also be modified or bundled with unwanted software. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 can create version conflicts and does not repair the registration, dependency, or application that caused the error.
The safe sources are the installed Windows component store, matching Windows installation media, System Restore, an official Microsoft repair process, or the official installer for the application that requested the file. Do not copy a downloaded DLL into System32 or register an unknown file.
Should you update a driver
Drivers are not the normal source of wlsrvc.dll, so Device Manager is not the first repair step. Check drivers only when the error began with a specific game or application after a graphics, audio, or chipset change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or System devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Device status message under General.
- Open the Driver tab and select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
For graphics and other critical devices, prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its full version installs the driver updates. It is optional, and a driver update will not replace the definitive reinstall of an application that specifically requires wlsrvc.dll.

Frequently asked questions
Is wlsrvc.dll a Microsoft file?
It is associated with Microsoft Windows Sidebar and Desktop Gadgets, and the publisher is Microsoft Corporation. Verify the path and digital signature because a file with the same name in an unrelated folder is not automatically genuine.
Is it part of Windows Live?
The internal description may say Windows Live Services, but Microsoft’s documented operational context is Windows Sidebar. It is not a current Windows Live runtime that should be installed separately.
Does Windows 11 include Windows Sidebar?
No. The original Vista and Windows 7 Sidebar is not a normal Windows 11 component. A wlsrvc.dll error on Windows 11 usually points to obsolete software, a startup entry, or an application that should be repaired or removed.
Should I register the DLL on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Only if you have a verified, intact legacy Sidebar installation and a documented reason to repair it. Do not register a random downloaded DLL. The Microsoft registration sequence is intended for the original Sidebar repair scenario.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does registration say that the specified module could not be found?
The DLL itself may be missing, or one of its dependencies may be unavailable. Confirm the complete path, use an administrator prompt, and repair Windows or the original application rather than downloading an isolated file.
Can SFC restore the file?
SFC can repair protected files belonging to the installed Windows image. It cannot add the old Sidebar feature to a Windows version that never included it.
What if the file is present but Sidebar still crashes?
Investigate Sidebar settings, gadgets, startup entries, and the user profile. Testing with a new Windows user profile can show whether the problem is profile-specific. Back up any needed settings before deleting or resetting profile data.
What is the safest final fix?
On Vista or Windows 7, use Microsoft’s Sidebar registration commands and repair the Windows installation if needed. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, identify and remove the obsolete requester, then repair or reinstall the current application that generated the error.
