The wording varies by application and Windows version, but the solution is usually the same: repair the audio application that is requesting the file.

The 60-second answer

rex shared library.dll is a third-party audio component associated with Propellerhead Software AB, now Reason Studios. It belongs to the REX SDK, which supports REX and REX2 audio loops used by Reason, ReCycle, and various digital audio workstations.

It is not a Windows system DLL and is not normally installed by Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. The file may be malicious, built for the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, or incompatible with the application that needs it.

Instead:

  1. Identify which program displays the error.
  2. Repair or reinstall that program using its official installer.
  3. Check Windows Security Protection History for quarantine.
  4. Investigate architecture, duplicate copies, and dependencies only if reinstalling does not help.

What is rex shared library.dll?

The file is described internally as REX Dynamically Linked Library and is part of the REX SDK. REX is an audio-loop format created for ReCycle. REX and REX2 files contain sliced audio loops that compatible music applications can tempo-sync and manipulate.

Reason Studios identifies ReCycle as the native tool for the REX format and lists support across applications including Reason, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Cubase, Nuendo, Studio One, REAPER, Cakewalk, Kontakt, and others.

A program may use the DLL to:

  • Open or import .rex or .rx2 files
  • Decode REX loop data
  • Load an older project containing REX material
  • Provide REX support through a bundled audio component
  • Start an older audio application that expects the library during launch

The file has historically appeared with older Propellerhead software, including Reason 2.5. That does not prove that every copy found on a current PC belongs to Reason. A DAW, plug-in, sampler, or legacy audio utility may have installed its own copy.

Why the error appears

The most likely causes are:

Cause What it means Correct response
Incomplete installation or update The host program lost one of its files Repair or reinstall the host
Antivirus quarantine Security software removed the DLL Inspect Protection History, then verify the source
Wrong architecture A 32-bit host found a 64-bit copy, or the reverse Install the matching application and components
Wrong duplicate copy Windows or the application found an older copy first Document and remove obsolete copies carefully
Missing dependency The DLL exists, but another library it needs is absent Repair the application and check Event Viewer
Legacy incompatibility Very old software does not work correctly on modern Windows Use a supported release or vendor guidance
Windows corruption Other Windows components are also damaged Use SFC and DISM as fallback repairs

Step 1: Identify the program requesting the DLL

Do not begin by searching the entire computer for a replacement file. First determine which program is failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the error dialog

Look at the title bar and the text around the error. The failing program may be:

  • Reason
  • ReCycle
  • A DAW
  • A sampler or plug-in
  • A project launcher
  • An older audio utility

If the error appears while opening one project, note the DAW and the project type. If it appears when importing a .rex or .rx2 file, the issue may be REX support rather than a startup dependency.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Look for an error at the time the program failed.
  6. Read the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and message.
  7. Record the application name before closing Event Viewer.

If the event names a DAW or plug-in, repair that application rather than Windows.

Check installed applications

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  4. Search for Reason, ReCycle, your DAW, or the plug-in involved.
  5. Note whether more than one version is installed.

An old and a new installation can leave conflicting shared components behind. Do not delete anything until you know which installation owns it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Confirm whether the host is 32-bit or 64-bit

A 32-bit application requires compatible 32-bit components. A 64-bit application generally requires compatible 64-bit components. Historical REX installations exist in both architectures, and an incorrect version can produce a load failure even when the filename is present.

  • Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
  • Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
  • Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
  • Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.

Check the application architecture

  1. Start the affected program if it opens far enough.
  2. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  3. Select Details.
  4. Right-click a column heading and select Select columns.
  5. Enable Platform if available.
  6. Look for the application process.

On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with a suffix such as (32 bit). You can also check the program’s Help, About, or installer documentation.

Match the repair to the host

  • If the failing program is 32-bit, install or repair its 32-bit release and matching components.
  • If it is 64-bit, use the 64-bit release supplied by the vendor.
  • Do not copy both versions into System32 or SysWOW64.
  • Do not assume that a file found in a Windows folder is the correct file for your DAW.

The correct location is determined by the application installer. Windows normally searches an application’s own directory before system directories, so a private bundled copy can take precedence over a system copy.

Step 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application

This is the most reliable fix.

Use Windows app repair

For a compatible desktop application:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

The Repair option may not be available for every desktop program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Control Panel

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Reason, ReCycle, the DAW, or the affected plug-in.
  5. Right-click it.
  6. Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
  7. Follow the installer prompts.
  8. Restart Windows and test the same operation again.

Microsoft documents these repair paths in its guidance for repairing apps and programs.

Reinstall from the official source

If Repair is unavailable or does not work:

  1. Back up projects, presets, custom samples, and license information.
  2. Uninstall the affected application from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download the installer from the application’s official vendor account or download page.
  5. Install the version appropriate for your Windows architecture.
  6. Start the application once before opening an older project.
  7. Test the project or REX file that produced the error.

Reason Studios provides official download and account-based installation paths for Reason and ReCycle. Current ReCycle 2.5 supports 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11, including Windows on ARM, but it may not provide binary compatibility for every very old Reason, DAW, or plug-in installation.

If the error belongs to a different DAW or plug-in, reinstall that product instead. Installing ReCycle is not a universal replacement for every application’s private REX component.

Run the program as administrator only for testing

Administrator access is not normally required for a runtime DLL, but it can help distinguish a permissions problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Search for the affected program.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Test the operation.

If this works only as administrator, check the application’s installation permissions and security software rather than permanently using an arbitrary DLL copy.

Step 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may remove a damaged or suspicious file. It may also quarantine a legitimate older audio component if its behavior resembles an unwanted program.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections from the time the error began.
  5. Open a relevant detection and inspect its path.
  6. Confirm that the path belongs to the legitimate Reason, ReCycle, DAW, or plug-in installation.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • It came from a legitimate installer.
  • The application is one you intentionally installed.
  • The detection details do not indicate malware.
  • You can verify the installation through the vendor.

After restoration, repair or reinstall the owning application so the vendor installer can replace the complete set of files.

Do not disable antivirus protection merely to force an unknown DLL to load. Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can put the device at risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Look for duplicate or wrong-version copies

A file with the right name can still be the wrong file.

Older audio software may install REX components in its application directory, a shared-components directory, or a Windows system directory. Modern applications may keep the component beside the executable. There is no single universal path that is correct for every installation.

Search safely

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. Search for:
    text
    REX Shared Library.dll
  4. Record every result location.
  5. Do not open, replace, or delete the files yet.
  6. Right-click each file and choose Properties.
  7. Check Details for product, company, and file information.

A legitimate copy should be inside a recognizable software installation or shared vendor folder. A copy in a temporary download folder, an unknown archive, or an untrusted package deserves further investigation.

Resolve a conflict

If you find multiple copies:

  1. Close all audio programs.
  2. Record each full path.
  3. Back up the relevant application settings and projects.
  4. Do not overwrite one application’s copy with another application’s copy.
  5. Use the affected application’s installer to repair its intended copy.
  6. If vendor support identifies an obsolete copy, rename it rather than deleting it immediately.
  7. Restart Windows and test again.

Renaming an obsolete copy can show whether it was being loaded, but do this only after recording its location and confirming that it belongs to an old or removed application.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s DLL search-order documentation explains why an application-local copy can be selected before a copy in a system directory. Duplicate files can therefore create version conflicts.

Step 6: Check whether a dependency is actually missing

An error saying that a module could not be found does not always mean that REX Shared Library.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Signs include:

  • The DLL is present in the application’s folder.
  • Reinstalling does not change the message.
  • Event Viewer reports a module-load failure.
  • The program fails only on one computer.
  • The error began after a system cleanup or runtime change.

Do not download individual dependency DLLs from the internet. Repair the host application first, then contact the application’s vendor if the dependency remains unclear.

Step 7: Run Windows repair tools when Windows itself is damaged

SFC and DISM are useful when multiple Windows features, updates, or protected system files are failing. They normally will not recreate a third-party REX DLL.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Choose Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the audio application. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If only the REX error remains, return to the host application’s installer rather than repeatedly running Windows repair commands.

When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM leaves the cause unclear, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repairs require the full version. Reinstalling the affected Reason, ReCycle, DAW, or plug-in remains the definitive fix for this application-owned DLL.

Step 8: Update or reinstall drivers only when the symptoms support it

A graphics or audio driver is not normally the owner of REX Shared Library.dll. Driver work is worth considering when the same application also crashes, loses audio devices, reports DirectX or device errors, or fails after a Windows update.

Check Device Manager

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the audio device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a clean reinstall:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the affected audio device.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Choose the option to remove the driver only if you have a verified replacement from the device manufacturer.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the current driver from the computer or audio-device manufacturer’s official support page.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale drivers; its free scan shows the detected issues, while driver installation requires the full version. Driver replacement is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns rex shared library.dll.

Step 9: Handle older Reason or ReCycle software

Reason 2.5-era software predates current Windows releases by many years. Compatibility mode may help an old executable start, but it cannot recreate a missing DLL or make an incompatible library architecture work.

Try compatibility settings only after reinstalling from a legitimate installer:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the program’s installation folder.
  2. Right-click the main .exe file.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open the Compatibility tab.
  5. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  6. Choose an older Windows version.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Test the program.

If the program still fails, use a supported Reason or ReCycle release where possible. Keep the original installer and license information if you must preserve a legacy project environment.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the required registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A runtime or helper library such as the REX component is normally loaded directly by the host application and does not need registry registration.

Do not run this as a generic repair:

regsvr32 "C:pathREX Shared Library.dll"

If it reports that an entry point is missing, that does not necessarily mean the file is corrupt. It may simply not be a self-registering DLL.

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that exact component and provides the correct architecture-specific procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to use System Restore

System Restore is a fallback, not the first fix.

Use it only when:

  • The error began after a recent installation, cleanup, or update.
  • A restore point exists from before the failure.
  • Repairing the affected application did not help.
  • You understand that later applications and settings may be rolled back.

To open it:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
    text
    rstrui.exe
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select a restore point dated before the error began.
  5. Review affected programs.
  6. Follow the prompts.

System Restore does not guarantee recovery of an application-owned DLL and can remove later program or configuration changes.

What not to do

Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Downloading rex shared library.dll from an unofficial DLL site
  • Copying an unknown file into System32
  • Copying a 32-bit file into SysWOW64, or the reverse
  • Replacing one application’s DLL with another application’s copy
  • Running regsvr32 repeatedly
  • Installing Microsoft runtimes without an error identifying them
  • Disabling antivirus to load an unverified file
  • Deleting every copy found by File Explorer
  • Running System Restore before trying the owning application’s installer

A random DLL can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, be an incompatible version, or fail because another dependency is missing. It often hides the actual problem instead of repairing it.

Frequently asked questions

Is rex shared library.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a third-party audio component associated with Propellerhead Software AB and the REX SDK. Windows does not normally supply it.

Does it belong to Reason 2.5?

It is historically associated with Reason 2.5, but the error on a current computer may come from Reason, ReCycle, a DAW, a plug-in, or another application that uses REX support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy it into System32?

No. The correct location depends on the host application. Windows usually searches the application’s own directory first, and a system-wide copy can create conflicts.

Why does the error appear only when importing a REX file?

The DAW may support REX only through a component that is missing, incompatible, or no longer installed. Repair the DAW or plug-in that handles the import.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?

Both historical 32-bit and 64-bit REX copies exist. Match the component to the host application rather than relying on the filename.

Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not for the REX DLL itself. Install those runtimes only if the separate error or the application’s official requirements specifically identify them.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact support?

Contact the vendor when the official installer completes successfully but the application still reports a missing or unloadable REX component, especially if Event Viewer reports a dependency failure or the software is a legacy release. Provide the exact error, application version, Windows version, host architecture, and the installation path without sending an arbitrary DLL.
