textexpt.dll is a legacy Data Dynamics ActiveReports Text Export file, not a Windows system component. If Windows reports that textexpt.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the application that installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The file provides plain-text export functionality for older ActiveReports applications. It may be installed directly with ActiveReports or bundled inside another program that used the ActiveReports reporting engine.

Fix textexpt.dll errors in order

1. Identify the application that needs the file

Time needed: 5–10 minutes

The program named in the error is usually the best starting point. The filename alone does not identify which application supplied it.

  1. Note the exact application name shown in the error.
  2. Right-click the application’s shortcut.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Check the Target field to identify the executable and installation folder.
  5. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  6. Select Apps.
  7. Choose Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  8. Search for the application name, ActiveReports, or software from the same publisher.
  9. Select the application and check whether Modify, Repair, or Change is available.

You can also search for the file without downloading anything:

  1. Press Windows + E.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. In the search box, enter textexpt.dll.
  4. Wait for the search to finish.
  5. Right-click any result and choose Open file location.

A legitimate copy is normally located inside the application’s own folder or a related program directory. It should not normally be sitting in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

If the error names an old industrial, engineering, reporting, or business application, repair that parent program first. Some third-party applications bundled ActiveReports without displaying the ActiveReports name in their own branding.

2. Repair or reinstall the parent application

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

This is the most likely solution because textexpt.dll is supplied by an application rather than by Windows.

Try the built-in repair option

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Choose the affected program.
  5. Select Modify or Repair, if available.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.

If the program has no repair option, use its original installer:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the affected application.
  2. Locate the original setup program or approved installation media.
  3. Right-click the installer.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Choose Repair if offered.
  6. Otherwise, uninstall the application from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Install the complete application again.
  9. Start the program and repeat the action that previously produced the error.

Do not copy only textexpt.dll from another computer. Older ActiveReports programs commonly require a matching set of files, including other reporting components and export filters. Reinstalling the complete application restores those dependencies together.

If the original installer is unavailable, contact the vendor of the application that displays the error. The correct source is that vendor’s installer or support channel, not a generic DLL repository.

3. Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined the file. A familiar filename does not automatically make every copy safe, so review the detection before restoring anything.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the application.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review entries associated with textexpt.dll.
  7. Expand the detection and check the file path, detection name, and action taken.

If the file came from the trusted installer for the affected application and the vendor confirms that the detection is a false positive, use the available Restore or Allow on device action. If Windows Security identifies the file as malware or potentially unwanted software, do not restore it. Reinstall the application from a trusted source instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft warns that allowing a detected file can expose the device if the detection is correct. A quarantined file should be restored only when its origin and integrity are clear.

After restoring a confirmed safe file, restart the application. If Windows Security immediately quarantines it again, stop trying to bypass the detection and contact the application vendor.

4. Check the application’s architecture and file version

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

The common historical textexpt.dll record describes a 32-bit Win32 file. Other historical records show that different builds existed, so the filename does not tell you which version your application requires.

A 32-bit application needs the matching 32-bit ActiveReports dependency. A random newer file, a 64-bit substitute, or a file from another ActiveReports generation may produce errors such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The procedure entry point was not found.
  • The application could not start correctly.
  • The file is not designed to run on Windows.
  • The application has a bad image.

To check the affected executable:

  1. Right-click its shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab.
  4. Note the product name and version.
  5. Open the application’s installation folder.
  6. Right-click the executable.
  7. Select Properties and check Details again.

You can also check whether Windows is 64-bit:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Check System type.

A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications. That does not mean a 64-bit DLL should be substituted for a 32-bit application dependency. The application’s installer must supply the correct build.

Do not treat historical version numbers, file sizes, or hashes found in file listings as universal requirements. Match the file to the application that supplied it.

5. Restore a missing deployed dependency

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

If you maintain software developed with ActiveReports, the deployment package may be incomplete. ActiveReports deployment documentation lists TextExpt.DLL among the export components needed when an application supports text export.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

Check the following:

  1. Compare the affected computer with a known-working installation of the same application version.
  2. Confirm that the application folder contains the complete reporting component set.
  3. Check whether a deployment script, packaging tool, or security product excluded the file.
  4. Rebuild or rerun the original application installer.
  5. Test text export after installation.

Do not assume that placing the file beside the executable is always sufficient. The program may depend on additional ActiveReports files, registry settings, COM components, or a particular installation path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Do not register it blindly with Regsvr32

Time needed: 5 minutes

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. It applies to DLLs that expose the registration functions expected by Windows, while many ordinary DLLs do not.

The legacy ActiveReports deployment documentation discusses copying and registering certain components in particular deployment scenarios, including web-server deployments. That does not prove that an ordinary desktop installation requires textexpt.dll to be registered.

Do not run this command merely because the filename ends in .dll:

regsvr32 textexpt.dll

If the original application vendor specifically instructs you to register the file, use the exact path and command supplied for that application. On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit and 64-bit regsvr32 programs are different, so using the wrong one can create another error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most desktop users, repairing or reinstalling the parent application is the correct approach.

7. Repair Windows components only if other system files are failing

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

textexpt.dll is not a protected Windows system file. SFC and DISM normally will not recreate it. They are useful when Windows itself is damaged or several unrelated system components are failing.

First run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for the command to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands complete. Test the affected application again.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, check whether other Windows problems have improved. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the application repair instead of expecting SFC to supply textexpt.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you are manually hunting through Windows repair logs and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the affected ActiveReports application remains the definitive fix for this file.

8. Update or reinstall related drivers only when the error began with broader hardware problems

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

A display, storage, or chipset driver does not normally provide textexpt.dll. Driver work is relevant only if the DLL error appeared alongside crashes, disk errors, application corruption, or a recent hardware change.

To check drivers through Windows:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the problem.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

To reinstall a suspect device:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the device.
  3. Select Uninstall device.
  4. Confirm the removal.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Install the driver supplied by the computer or device manufacturer.

When identifying stale drivers manually means checking many hardware vendors and matching exact versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it should not replace repairing the parent application.

9. Use System Restore after a recent change

Time needed: 20–45 minutes

System Restore may help if the error began immediately after installing or removing software, but it is not the normal solution for a missing application DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  6. Select Next.
  7. Review the affected applications.
  8. Select Finish.

System Restore can change installed programs and system settings without removing personal files. It will not reliably restore a missing ActiveReports installation if the parent application itself must be repaired.

Why common fixes do not usually work

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET

No current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET installer is known to supply this specific legacy DLL. Installing those runtimes may be appropriate if the error names a different missing dependency, but they should not be expected to recreate textexpt.dll.

SFC and DISM

These commands repair protected Windows components and the Windows image. Since textexpt.dll belongs to third-party ActiveReports software, they normally will not restore it.

Windows Features

Turning on optional Windows features is not a normal fix for this file. You can check them under Settings → System → Optional features, but do not install unrelated components simply because an old application fails.

Manual DLL downloads

Avoid downloading textexpt.dll from random DLL websites. A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to a different ActiveReports build, use the wrong architecture, or be missing other files the application needs. It can also conceal the original problem, such as an incomplete installation or antivirus quarantine.

What caused the error

The most likely causes are:

Cause Appropriate response
Incomplete installation or uninstall Repair or reinstall the parent application
Antivirus quarantine Review Protection history and verify the source
Wrong build or architecture Install the matching application version
Incomplete software deployment Redeploy the complete ActiveReports dependency set
File corruption or disk errors Reinstall first, then investigate disk health
Windows component damage Run DISM and SFC only when broader Windows symptoms exist
Recent software change Consider System Restore

A file in a temporary folder, startup folder, or unexpected user-profile location deserves additional malware review. A valid filename, metadata record, or publisher signature alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe.

ActiveReports Text Export versus the .NET assembly

Do not confuse native-looking textexpt.dll with ActiveReports.TextExport.dll.

textexpt.dll is associated with older Data Dynamics ActiveReports components, especially ActiveReports 2-era COM and ActiveX software. ActiveReports for .NET used a differently named managed assembly. Installing or repairing one product line does not necessarily replace files from the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error remains after reinstalling

Collect these details before contacting the software vendor:

  • The complete error message
  • The name of the application that fails
  • The application executable path
  • The path where Windows found or expected textexpt.dll
  • Windows edition and system type
  • The application and ActiveReports version
  • Whether antivirus recently quarantined a file
  • Whether the error occurs at startup or only during text export

If reinstalling the parent application does not help, the missing file may be only the first dependency problem. A vendor can provide the correct installer, deployment instructions, or a build-specific compatibility fix.

FAQ

Is textexpt.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a third-party ActiveReports Text Export component associated with legacy Data Dynamics software. It should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Which program installed textexpt.dll?

The application named in the error and the DLL’s directory are more reliable clues than the filename. Search installed applications for ActiveReports and inspect the executable’s installation folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download textexpt.dll separately?

That is not recommended. Use the original application installer or contact the vendor that supplied the program. The correct build depends on the application, version, architecture, and deployment arrangement.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. Do not place a downloaded or copied DLL in System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder unless the original vendor specifically provides and documents that procedure.

Is textexpt.dll 32-bit?

The common historical record identifies a 32-bit Win32 build, but other historical builds exist. Verify the required architecture and version from the parent application instead of relying on the filename.

Will regsvr32 fix the problem?

Usually not. Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor gives exact registration instructions for that deployment. It is not a universal missing-DLL repair command.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Windows says the file is corrupt or not designed to run on Windows?

Check the file’s source, architecture, integrity, and the complete application dependency set. Repair or reinstall the parent application rather than replacing the file with a random copy.

Is every textexpt.dll file malicious?

No. A legitimate copy can be part of an old ActiveReports installation, but a modified or repacked copy may be unsafe. Review its path, signature, antivirus history, and source before restoring it.
