nvspcap64.dll is an NVIDIA Capture Server Proxy file used by GeForce Experience for ShadowPlay and overlay features. If Windows says it is missing, cannot be loaded, or cannot find ShadowPlayOnSystemStart, repair the NVIDIA installation first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
nvspcap64.dll belongs to NVIDIA capture software, historically supplied with NVIDIA GeForce Experience. Its internal description is NVIDIA Capture Server Proxy, and its publisher is NVIDIA Corporation.
The file supports NVIDIA recording, ShadowPlay, and in-game overlay functions. It is not a Windows DLL, even when Windows reports it from C:WindowsSystem32. System32 is an installation location; it does not prove that Microsoft owns every file stored there.
The 64 in the name identifies the 64-bit variant. Do not replace it with a similarly named 32-bit DLL, an older copy from another computer, or a file downloaded from an unofficial DLL library.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall NVIDIA software
This is the most reliable repair when the error started after a graphics-driver, GeForce Experience, or NVIDIA App update.
Option A: Reinstall NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for NVIDIA App and GeForce Experience.
- If both are installed, note which one provides your recording and overlay features.
- Select the relevant NVIDIA application.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience installer from NVIDIA’s official website.
- Install it again.
- Restart Windows once more.
- Open the NVIDIA application and check whether the overlay or recording feature works.
If you still use ShadowPlay, make sure the installation includes the recording or overlay components. If you do not want those features, you can leave them disabled instead of repeatedly restoring a file you no longer need.
Option B: Perform a clean NVIDIA driver installation
Use this route when the error began after a display-driver update, when the NVIDIA application cannot be removed normally, or when multiple NVIDIA components are failing.
- Open NVIDIA’s official Driver Downloads page.
- Select your product family, product series, model, operating system, and driver type.
- Download the driver that matches your graphics card and Windows installation.
- Close games, browsers, launchers, and GPU utilities.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Allow the installer to check your system.
- Choose Custom (Advanced) when that option appears.
- Select Perform a clean installation.
- Continue through the installation.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
A clean installation resets NVIDIA settings and replaces old driver components. The screen may flicker, go black briefly, or switch to a basic resolution while the display driver is being installed. That is normally temporary.
After restarting, test the application that produced the error. If the popup has disappeared and the NVIDIA overlay opens normally, the repair worked.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which installed drivers are stale when manually identifying the correct graphics package becomes difficult. Its free scan identifies problems, while the full version performs the driver installation; NVIDIA’s official installer remains the right source for a specific NVIDIA graphics driver.
Fix 2: Remove a stale ShadowPlay startup command
A particularly recognizable error is:
Missing entry: ShadowPlayOnSystemStart
This usually means Windows is trying to run an NVIDIA command at sign-in, but the DLL, the exported function, or the rest of the NVIDIA installation is gone.
The command may resemble:
C:WindowsSystem32rundll32.exe C:WindowsSystem32nvspcap64.dll,ShadowPlayOnSystemStart
If you want ShadowPlay, reinstall NVIDIA software as described above. Recreating the missing DLL is better than disabling the startup command because the overlay may depend on other NVIDIA components as well.
If you no longer want ShadowPlay, remove the stale startup item instead.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an NVIDIA, GeForce Experience, ShadowPlay, or capture entry.
- Select the entry.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10, the section may be called Startup rather than Startup apps.

Disabling a startup entry stops it from launching automatically, but it does not remove the underlying program. If the error continues, check the other locations below.
Check Windows Settings startup entries
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Startup.
- Turn off an NVIDIA or ShadowPlay entry that refers to the missing capture feature.
- Restart Windows.
Do not disable NVIDIA display-driver services indiscriminately. The goal is to remove only the entry associated with the missing capture component.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library in the left pane.
- Review tasks with names referring to NVIDIA, GeForce Experience, ShadowPlay, or capture.
- Double-click a suspicious task.
- Select the Actions tab.
- Look for an action that calls
rundll32.exeand referencesnvspcap64.dll. - If it clearly belongs to the obsolete ShadowPlay entry, right-click the task and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If you are uncertain whether a task belongs to a current NVIDIA installation, leave it enabled and repair NVIDIA software instead.
Registry cleanup is a last resort
A stale Run entry can also cause the popup. Registry editing can make Windows or other applications unstable, so use it only when you have identified the exact obsolete command.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
regedit. - Press Enter.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Before changing anything, select File > Export.
- Save a backup of the registry or the relevant key.
- Use Edit > Find and search for
nvspcap64.dll. - Remove only a value that explicitly launches the obsolete NVIDIA ShadowPlay command.
- Do not delete an entire NVIDIA key simply because its name contains NVIDIA.
- Restart Windows.
If the entry returns, an installed NVIDIA component or scheduled task is recreating it. Reinstall or uninstall the owning NVIDIA software rather than repeatedly deleting the registry value.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software can remove or quarantine nvspcap64.dll, leaving the NVIDIA startup command behind. A quarantine event does not automatically prove that the file was malware, but restoring a file without checking it is also unsafe.
Review Windows Security
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand any detection that names
nvspcap64.dll, GeForce Experience, NVIDIA App, or an NVIDIA installation folder. - Read the detection details.
- Check whether the file came from an official NVIDIA installation.
- If the file is genuine and the detection is clearly a false positive, use the available restore or allow option.
- Restart Windows and test the NVIDIA feature.
Microsoft’s Protection history documentation explains how quarantined items are handled. Do not disable antivirus protection merely to force a DLL download, and do not restore a file obtained from an unofficial source.
A safer alternative is to reinstall NVIDIA software after the quarantine. The installer can place a fresh copy and restore related dependencies without trusting a loose file.
Fix 4: Verify the file’s path and digital signature
A genuine file should be associated with a legitimate NVIDIA installation and should identify NVIDIA as its signer.

- Right-click
nvspcap64.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the General tab.
- Note the full location.
A commonly reported location is:
C:WindowsSystem32
That location alone is not proof of authenticity. Be cautious if the file is in a temporary folder, a user profile download folder, a random application directory, or a folder with an unrelated name.

Check the signature
- In the file’s Properties window, select Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature listed for the file.
- Choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Check that the signer is NVIDIA Corporation or an appropriate NVIDIA signing identity.
- If the tab is missing, the signature is invalid, or the signer is unrelated, do not restore or execute the file.
If the signature is questionable, remove the unofficial copy and reinstall NVIDIA software from NVIDIA’s official download pages. Run a full security scan if the file appeared outside a normal NVIDIA installation.
Fix 5: Repair the graphics driver through Device Manager
Device Manager is useful when Windows has associated the graphics card with a damaged or recently changed driver. It is not always enough to restore NVIDIA’s capture application, but it is a reasonable driver-level check.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your NVIDIA graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider and status.
If the problem began immediately after a driver change, select Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Follow the prompts and restart Windows.
If rollback is unavailable:
- Return to the device’s Driver tab.
- Select Uninstall Device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver software.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct driver from NVIDIA’s official driver page.
Do not install a random display driver solely because it contains a file with a similar name. The graphics driver and capture software must be a compatible package.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when broader corruption exists
SFC and DISM are often suggested for every DLL error. They are not the primary repair for nvspcap64.dll because this is an NVIDIA file rather than a protected Windows component. Use them when Windows itself shows wider signs of corruption, several applications fail, or the NVIDIA installer cannot complete because the operating system is damaged.
First open an elevated terminal:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the NVIDIA installer again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files. Neither command should be expected to download or reconstruct a third-party NVIDIA DLL.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting for Windows component problems and do not know what changed. Its free scan reports issues, while the repair is performed by the full version; use it as an optional aid, not as a substitute for reinstalling NVIDIA software.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFix 7: Install pending Windows updates
A Windows update can resolve installation, servicing, or compatibility problems that prevent an NVIDIA package from completing.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when requested.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Once Windows is current, reinstall or repair the NVIDIA package.
If the error began immediately after a Windows update and the NVIDIA installer now fails, note the update timing. Do not remove updates casually, but use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists and the problem is clearly tied to a recent system change.
Fix 8: Use System Restore for a recent update-related failure
System Restore is appropriate when the error appeared after a recent driver or software change and ordinary reinstallations do not work.
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point created before the
nvspcap64.dllerror began. - Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore can roll back drivers, applications, registry settings, and system files. It does not normally remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before proceeding.

Fix 9: Repair the game or application that triggers the error
If the message appears only when starting one game, use that program’s own repair function first.
Typical steps are:
- Open the game launcher.
- Find the game in your library.
- Open its menu or Properties page.
- Select Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Restart the launcher.
- Repair NVIDIA software if the DLL message remains.
nvspcap64.dll is normally an NVIDIA capture component, not a game-owned dependency. A game repair may fix a separate overlay integration problem, but copying the DLL into the game folder is not a sound repair.
Why you should not download this DLL separately
Random DLL download sites websites create several problems:
- The file may contain malware or have been tampered with.
- The version may not match your driver or capture software.
- A 32-bit file may be offered for a 64-bit installation.
- The file may be missing required dependent components.
- Windows may continue calling a stale startup entry.
- A loose copy may have no valid NVIDIA signature.
- The underlying driver installation remains damaged.
Do not copy a downloaded DLL into System32, the game folder, or an application directory. Use the official NVIDIA App, GeForce Experience installer where applicable, or NVIDIA’s official graphics-driver download instead.

Why regsvr32 nvspcap64.dll is not the fix
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing file, repair an NVIDIA installation, or recreate a ShadowPlay startup component.
Running this command is therefore not an appropriate general repair:
regsvr32 nvspcap64.dll
If Windows reports that the entry point is missing, that is further evidence that this DLL is not meant to be repaired through generic self-registration. Reinstall the owning NVIDIA package instead.
Do Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Usually not. There is no basis for treating nvspcap64.dll as a component supplied by Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInstall or repair those runtimes only when the affected game or application separately reports a missing runtime. Reinstalling them will not normally restore NVIDIA Capture Server Proxy or remove a stale ShadowPlay startup command.
If the error persists after reinstalling NVIDIA software
Work through these checks in order:
- Read the exact path in the error message.
- Check whether the file exists at that path.
- Check its digital signature and publisher.
- Review Windows Security Protection history.
- Check Task Manager’s Startup apps.
- Check Windows Settings startup entries.
- Check Task Scheduler for an old
rundll32action. - Look for NVIDIA services in the Services app.
- Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the failing executable and module.
- If only one game fails, repair that game.
- If the NVIDIA installer fails, run DISM and SFC, restart, and try again.
- Use an older compatible NVIDIA driver from NVIDIA’s advanced driver search if your Windows version or hardware is not supported by the newest package.
Do not force a current NVIDIA App installer onto an unsupported older Windows installation. Select a driver and NVIDIA software version that matches the operating system’s documented requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Is nvspcap64.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an NVIDIA Capture Server Proxy component associated with GeForce Experience and NVIDIA capture features. It may appear in System32, but that does not make it a Microsoft-owned Windows file.
Is nvspcap64.dll malware?
The legitimate file is published by NVIDIA Corporation. A file with this name should still be checked by path, digital signature, and installation source. Malware can use familiar filenames, and antivirus quarantine can also result from a false positive or a damaged copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy does the error appear during startup?
GeForce Experience or an older ShadowPlay installation can register a startup command that calls rundll32.exe with ShadowPlayOnSystemStart. Windows runs that command when you sign in, so the popup can appear before you launch a game.
Should I keep the file if I never use ShadowPlay?
You do not need the capture feature if you do not use it. Uninstall or disable the relevant NVIDIA capture software and remove any stale startup entry. Do not delete the DLL manually while leaving the startup command behind.
Does the 64 mean I need a special download?
It means the filename identifies a 64-bit variant. You should not choose a file by name alone. Let the official NVIDIA installer select the correct architecture and compatible version.
Can Device Manager restore the file?
Device Manager can roll back, uninstall, or update the display driver, but it may not restore every GeForce Experience or ShadowPlay component. If the error specifically names the capture DLL, repair the NVIDIA software package as well.
Will SFC repair nvspcap64.dll?
Not normally. SFC primarily repairs protected Windows system files. It is appropriate for broader Windows corruption, not as the first repair for an NVIDIA third-party DLL.
When is reinstalling Visual C++ appropriate?
Only when the affected application separately reports a Visual C++ runtime problem. It is not the default solution for nvspcap64.dll.
What is the safest final repair?
Remove the damaged or incomplete NVIDIA installation, restart Windows, install the correct NVIDIA driver or NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s official source, and then remove any stale ShadowPlay startup entry if capture is no longer wanted.
