chinese.dll Is Missing: Repair the App That Requested It

“chinese.dll not found.” The chinese.dll error usually means a particular application cannot locate one of its own files, not that Windows has lost a universal system component.

The safest repair is to identify the program that requested chinese.dll, then repair, verify, update, or reinstall that program from its official installer. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into System32.

Which fix applies to you

Use the description that best matches what you see:

  • The error names a game or application: Repair or verify that program first.
  • The problem began after an update, cleanup, move, or backup restore: The application installation is probably incomplete or pointing to the wrong location.
  • Windows Security shows the file in quarantine: Confirm the file’s path and publisher before restoring anything. Reinstalling the application is usually safer.
  • The message says the file was not designed to run on Windows: Suspect a damaged file, incompatible architecture, or the wrong version.
  • Only one user account has the problem: Test the application from a new local Windows profile.
  • Several Windows components or applications are failing: Run DISM and SFC, then restart.
  • You cannot identify the application: Use the error window, shortcut, installation folders, Event Viewer, launcher logs, and antivirus history to trace it.

What chinese.dll actually is

chinese.dll is a real DLL filename, but it does not identify one canonical Microsoft component, Windows runtime, or redistributable package. Unrelated software can use the same filename for Chinese-language resources, localization code, or ordinary application functionality.

Windows’ modern localization system generally uses language-specific .mui files associated with an application binary. That makes it unsafe to assume that every chinese.dll belongs to Windows or performs the same job.

The filename also cannot tell you whether the file is a code library or a language-resource DLL. The full path, file properties, digital signature, exports, and parent application are what establish its identity.

Some public file listings show conflicting version, size, and hash information for chinese.dll. Those records do not establish a safe universal download, a verified publisher, or the correct file for your application.

1. Find the application that requested the file

Repairing the wrong program wastes time. Before changing Windows, identify the executable that tried to load chinese.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the error window

Read the title bar and the text around the error. The application name may appear before the DLL message. Also note whether the message appears when you:

  • Start a game or desktop application
  • Open a document
  • Launch a utility from a shortcut
  • Log in to Windows
  • Connect a device
  • Start a launcher or updater

If the error appears only when one program starts, that program is the primary suspect.

Inspect the shortcut

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field.
  5. Note the folder containing the executable.

The application directory is often more useful than the DLL name. A chinese.dll beside a game executable is not necessarily related to a chinese.dll inside a scanner utility or an old localization framework.

Search common installation locations

Open File Explorer and check:

  • C:Program Files
  • C:Program Files (x86)
  • The folder where the game or application was installed
  • A launcher’s library folder
  • A plugin, mod, or add-on directory

Do not treat every search result as the file Windows needs. Multiple applications can contain files with the same basename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you find a copy, right-click it and choose Properties. Check the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs. Record the full path, file description, company name if present, architecture information if shown, and signature status.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Choose Find from the Actions pane.
  6. Search for chinese.dll.
  7. Review events at the time the error occurred.

You may instead see the application executable, a side-by-side activation error, or a module name rather than the DLL itself. Record the event timestamp and the application named in the event.

Check launcher and antivirus records

If the problem affects a game or managed application, open its launcher and review its logs, repair options, or installation status.

For antivirus history:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections from the time the error began.
  5. Expand any detection that mentions the application folder or chinese.dll.

A quarantine entry is not proof that the file is safe, and an unfamiliar DLL should not be restored merely because an application requests it. Confirm the original installation source and file path first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Repair or verify the requesting application

This is the most likely fix when the error began after installing, updating, moving, cleaning, or restoring an application.

Use the application’s repair option

The exact menu varies, but look in the application launcher or Windows settings:

  1. Open the application’s launcher or settings.
  2. Find the installed application or game.
  3. Look for Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Verify integrity of game files.
  4. Start the check.
  5. Allow the launcher to download or rebuild missing files.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Start the application again.

A successful repair normally removes the chinese.dll message and allows the program to reach its normal sign-in screen, menu, or working interface.

Repair from Windows Settings

For applications registered with Windows:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application.

If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall from the official source

If there is no repair or verification option:

  1. Back up the application’s save files, profiles, templates, or other personal data.
  2. Uninstall the application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download the installer from the application developer or the official launcher.
  5. Install it into a normal application folder.
  6. Start the program before adding mods, plugins, translations, or custom files.

Do not copy chinese.dll from another computer or another installation. Even if the filename matches, the file may belong to a different build, architecture, publisher, or application.

If reinstalling fixes the issue until a mod or plugin is restored, add those extras one at a time. A plugin folder, mod folder, or user-profile cache may be supplying the wrong file or causing the application to search the wrong location.

3. Check whether antivirus quarantined the application copy

If Windows Security lists the file, first establish its provenance.

Check these details:

  • The complete path of the detected file
  • The application that installed it
  • The file’s publisher and digital signature
  • Whether the application came from its official vendor or an unofficial repack
  • Whether the detection returns immediately after reinstalling

If the file came from an official installer and the vendor confirms a false detection, follow the vendor’s documented recovery process. Restore a quarantined file only when its source and safety are established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the file came from an unofficial repack, cracked program, temporary folder, or unknown archive, do not restore it. Uninstall the associated software and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.

To run a full scan:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.

If chinese.dll is repeatedly quarantined, stop restoring it and investigate its full path, signature, hash, and installer source.

4. Correct a wrong architecture or incompatible file

A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit dependency, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit replacement cannot satisfy a 32-bit application.

A wrong or damaged architecture may produce messages such as:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “The program can’t start because chinese.dll was not found.”
  • “The file was not designed to run on Windows.”
  • “The application was unable to start correctly.”
  • An access violation or immediate crash after launch

The correct repair is to restore the exact build supplied by the parent application.

Do not try to fix this by placing files in:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64

On 64-bit Windows, those folders have specific system roles. System32 contains 64-bit system binaries, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. Neither folder is a general-purpose location for third-party application DLLs.

To check the application architecture:

  1. Right-click the application executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open Details and Compatibility if available.
  4. Check the application’s official requirements or support documentation.
  5. Repair or reinstall the matching application build.

If the program was moved manually to another drive, reinstall it to the new location instead of dragging individual DLLs between folders.

5. Install only dependencies the application actually requires

Visual C++ Redistributable

Install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application’s official requirements identify it or the application displays a separate Visual C++ runtime error.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Microsoft’s Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page. Choose the architecture required by the application. Multiple Visual C++ generations can coexist, but installing every package does not generally provide chinese.dll.

After installation:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Launch the affected application.
  3. If the same chinese.dll message remains, return to repairing the application itself.

Legacy DirectX components

Some older games require legacy DirectX components that are separate from the current Windows graphics stack. Use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer only when the game’s requirements or error message specifically identifies DirectX.

DirectX does not establish that chinese.dll is one of its files.

.NET and Windows Features

If the application explicitly requires a .NET version or Windows optional feature:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Optional features.
  4. Review installed features.
  5. Choose View features to add a required feature.

On some Windows editions, you can also press Windows + R, type optionalfeatures, and press Enter. Enable only the feature named by the application’s official requirements, then restart.

Installing unrelated runtimes or enabling every legacy feature is not a substitute for reinstalling the parent application.

6. Repair Windows components when Windows itself is damaged

This step is appropriate when several Windows features are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or built-in applications also report missing or corrupted files. It is less likely to recreate a third-party application DLL.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Press Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.

Run DISM first:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. Then run System File Checker:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the application.

Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run it once more. If only one third-party application still fails, stop repeating SFC and return to that application’s installer.

Running these commands repeatedly without identifying what changed rarely fixes a missing application DLL. If you prefer a guided scan that identifies corrupted Windows components before applying its full repair, Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the need to hunt through repair results manually; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing file.

7. Update drivers only when the application depends on one

A driver is not a likely source of chinese.dll by itself, but a graphics, printer, scanner, audio, or input application may fail after a driver change or may include a companion utility that depends on the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Device Manager

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Printers, Sound, video and game controllers, or Imaging devices.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows.

For a recent driver-related failure:

  1. Right-click the device in Device Manager.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Driver tab.
  4. Choose Roll Back Driver if available.
  5. Restart and test the application.

Prefer the device manufacturer’s official driver page when Device Manager does not find a suitable update. Avoid driver packages from unofficial download pages.

Manually checking device models and matching driver versions can be tedious when several devices are stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it identifies; the free scan shows the findings, while installing drivers through the full version is optional. If chinese.dll belongs to a particular application, reinstalling that application is still the definitive repair.

8. Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL installer

This command is often recommended for every missing DLL, but that is incorrect.

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the required registration entry points, such as DllRegisterServer. Many application libraries, language resources, and runtime dependencies do not support registration and do not need it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running:

regsvr32 chinese.dll

may produce an error such as:

  • The module was loaded but the entry point was not found
  • The specified module could not be found
  • The module failed to load

That result does not prove that Windows is missing a registration entry. It may simply mean the DLL is not a self-registering component.

Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor specifically instructs you to register that exact file and provides the correct command, path, and architecture. Microsoft documents the command’s syntax and purpose in its Regsvr32 documentation.

9. Try System Restore after a clearly identified change

If chinese.dll worked before a driver installation, application update, or system change, System Restore may help.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore can revert applications, settings, and system state changed after the selected point. It does not replace the need to reinstall an application if that application’s files are still incomplete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Test a new Windows profile

If the program works for another Windows account, the problem may be limited to your profile’s path, permissions, cache, or configuration.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Select Other users.
  4. Choose Add account.
  5. Create a local test account.
  6. Sign in to that account.
  7. Start the affected application.

If the application works there, repair its profile settings, clear only vendor-documented caches, or contact the application developer. Do not copy DLLs between user profiles as a workaround.

Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix

Downloading chinese.dll from an arbitrary DLL website can introduce:

  • Malware or a tampered file
  • The wrong architecture
  • An incompatible build
  • A file from an unrelated application
  • A version conflict with the original installation
  • A misleading appearance of repair while the underlying installation remains damaged

Even a file with the correct name may have a different publisher, export list, language resource, or dependency set. The safe source is the official installer, launcher, recovery feature, or vendor support channel for the application that requested it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevention after the repair

Once the program starts normally:

  • Keep it installed in one stable folder.
  • Update it through its official launcher or vendor.
  • Avoid deleting unknown DLLs during disk cleanup.
  • Reinstall rather than manually moving application folders.
  • Back up saves and configuration files before updates.
  • Add mods and plugins one at a time.
  • Keep Windows Security enabled.
  • Do not restore quarantined files without checking their provenance.
  • Record the application path and version before making major changes.

FAQ

Is chinese.dll part of Windows?

There is no authoritative Microsoft identification of one universal Windows system DLL named chinese.dll. Different applications can use that filename.

Should I copy it to System32?

Normally no. The correct location is usually the requesting application’s own directory or a vendor-managed subdirectory.

Will Visual C++ fix chinese.dll?

Only if the application separately requires a Visual C++ runtime and that runtime is missing. Visual C++ does not generally supply chinese.dll.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

Normally no. Use regsvr32 only when the vendor specifically confirms that the DLL supports registration and provides the correct command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is chinese.dll malware?

The filename alone cannot establish that. Check the full path, digital signature, hash, installer source, and antivirus detection. A copy in a suspicious temporary directory deserves a full security investigation.

What if reinstalling the application does not work?

Confirm that the application is loading the expected folder, then check for stale copies in plugin, mod, cache, or user-profile directories. Review Event Viewer and launcher logs, verify architecture, and test a new Windows profile.

What information should I provide when asking for help?

Include the exact error text, application name, executable path, full chinese.dll path if present, Windows version, file Properties details, digital signature status, whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit, and the time the failure occurred.
