The errors you may see
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows may report one of these messages when an old Sony Ericsson program starts, installs, repairs, or is removed:
- “fmgrobex.dll is missing”
- “fmgrobex.dll was not found”
- “Error loading fmgrobex.dll”
- “The specified module could not be found”
- “Cannot register fmgrobex.dll”
- “The program can’t start because fmgrobex.dll is missing from your computer”
The 60-second answer
fmgrobex.dll is not a Windows file. It is the File Manager Obex Module, an application component associated with Sony Ericsson PC Suite and related phone-management software.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the complete Sony Ericsson PC Suite or File Manager installation from the original CD, phone bundle, or another trustworthy preserved installer. Do not download fmgrobex.dll separately and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
If you no longer use the old Sony Ericsson software, uninstall the remaining suite and remove its stale shortcuts or startup entries instead of restoring the DLL.

What fmgrobex.dll does
The name refers to an OBEX file-transfer component used by older Sony Ericsson software. OBEX is associated with exchanging objects such as files between a Windows computer and a phone over supported connections.
The file is commonly associated with a location similar to:
C:Program FilesSony EricssonMobileFile Managerfmgrobex.dll
The exact folder can differ between PC Suite releases and 32-bit or 64-bit Windows installations. A catalogue-reported version and file size should not be treated as universal because the original package installed on your computer may be different.
This is an old 32-bit-style application component, not a modern Windows runtime. It should not normally be located in:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The presence of a file with this name in either Windows system folder, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves additional scrutiny.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- The Sony Ericsson PC Suite or File Manager installation is incomplete or damaged.
- Antivirus software quarantined or removed the file.
- An old installer cannot complete registration on modern Windows.
- The software was uninstalled incompletely, leaving a shortcut or startup entry behind.
- A required dependency is missing even though
fmgrobex.dllitself exists. - The file is corrupt, mismatched, or from an untrusted source.
- Broader disk or Windows component corruption is affecting several programs.
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows can display that message when the DLL exists but one of its dependent modules cannot be loaded.
First, identify what is calling the file
Before repairing Windows, confirm that the error belongs to Sony Ericsson software.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Sony Ericsson, PC Suite, or File Manager.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features instead.
Also check the older Control Panel list:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Look for Sony Ericsson PC Suite or related phone software.
If the error appears immediately after clicking a Sony Ericsson shortcut, the parent application is clear. If no Sony Ericsson software is installed, inspect the shortcut, startup entry, or scheduled task that is producing the message rather than downloading the DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the shortcut target
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Look for a path containing Sony Ericsson, Mobile, PC Suite, or File Manager.
If the shortcut points to a folder that no longer exists, remove the shortcut. If it launches at sign-in, open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and disable the stale Sony Ericsson entry.
Do not delete an entire program folder before checking whether the software is still listed in Installed apps or Programs and Features.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Sony Ericsson PC Suite
This is the most reliable repair because the DLL belongs to the application, not Windows.

Try the built-in repair option
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Sony Ericsson PC Suite or File Manager.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the Sony Ericsson program again.
Older installers may expose repair differently:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select Sony Ericsson PC Suite.
- Choose Change or Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If the program opens without the error, the repair restored the application files. Test the phone connection and File Manager functions before removing anything else.
Reinstall the complete suite
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- In Installed apps or Programs and Features, select Sony Ericsson PC Suite.
- Select Uninstall.
- Remove related Sony Ericsson File Manager or phone-connection components if they are listed.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from the original installation CD, the phone’s original software bundle, or a trustworthy vendor-preserved installer.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Connect the phone only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
A current official Sony download for this legacy PC Suite component may no longer be available. Avoid replacing the missing file with a standalone copy from a DLL download site. The installer must provide the matching executable, dependencies, registration data, and supporting components together.
If the installer says that a module could not be registered, continue to the compatibility and registration sections below rather than copying the DLL into a Windows folder.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove an old DLL because legacy applications may be unsigned, use outdated installers, or contain behavior that resembles unwanted software. Do not restore a file automatically.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item associated with Sony Ericsson or
fmgrobex.dll. - Confirm the original path and detection details.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from the original Sony Ericsson installation and the installation source is trustworthy.
Microsoft documents this workflow in Protection History in Windows Security.
Reinstalling the complete Sony Ericsson suite is usually safer than restoring an isolated DLL. If Windows Security detects a file outside the expected Sony Ericsson program directory, do not restore it merely because its filename is correct.
After restoration or reinstallation, run a full security scan. If the file has no trustworthy source, quarantine it and remove the parent application.
Fix 3: Run the old installer with compatibility settings
Sony Ericsson PC Suite was designed for older Windows versions. Its installer may fail on Windows 10 or Windows 11 because of permissions, old registration behavior, or incompatible setup code.
- Right-click the original installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test Windows XP first if that is the environment the software originally targeted. If setup still fails, test Windows 7.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer again.
Do not enable compatibility mode for every Windows program. Apply it to the Sony Ericsson installer or executable that needs it.

Fix 4: Treat registration errors correctly
Do not blindly run:
regsvr32 fmgrobex.dll
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL installation command. It works only when the DLL provides the required registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft explains the utility’s behavior in its regsvr32 documentation, and documents DLL registration entry points separately here.
An old File Manager installer may attempt to register fmgrobex.dll and related modules. That historical installer behavior does not prove that manually registering the file is safe or useful.
If the original installer reports a registration failure:
- Cancel the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Try the compatibility settings above.
- Temporarily check whether security software blocked part of the installation.
- Reinstall the complete suite rather than registering one file.
- Check any installer log for the module or dependency that actually failed.
If you do test registration because the vendor installer explicitly requires it, use the DLL in its original application folder and match the command prompt architecture to the application. Never move the file to System32 or SysWOW64 first.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit placement
Most old Sony Ericsson software is likely to be 32-bit, even when installed on 64-bit Windows. That does not mean its DLL belongs in both Windows system directories.
Windows uses separate handling for 32-bit and 64-bit applications under WOW64. Microsoft explains the distinction in its File System Redirector documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the application’s own folder. Common locations include:
C:Program FilesSony Ericsson
C:Program Files (x86)Sony Ericsson
The presence of fmgrobex.dll in Program Files (x86) is consistent with an older 32-bit application. Its absence from System32 is not a problem.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL to System32, and do not copy another copy to SysWOW64 as a second attempt. A mismatched architecture can produce errors such as:
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows”
- “Bad image”
- “The specified module could not be found”
The correct replacement is the copy supplied by the exact Sony Ericsson package being repaired.

It is optional, and reinstalling Sony Ericsson File Manager remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that result does not prove fmgrobex.dll is present. It only indicates that protected Windows system files were not the problem.
Fix 7: Check the phone driver only when the phone itself is not detected
A missing fmgrobex.dll is not normally fixed by reinstalling a USB or phone driver. However, an old Sony Ericsson installation can produce two separate problems: the File Manager DLL error and a phone that Windows does not detect.
Check the driver only after repairing the suite:
- Connect the phone using the original or known-good cable.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices.
- Look for a Sony Ericsson device, an unknown device, or a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Disconnect the phone.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the phone software from the original package.
- Reconnect the phone when setup requests it.
Do not uninstall unrelated USB controllers. If Device Manager shows no warning and the only symptom is fmgrobex.dll, focus on the PC Suite/File Manager installation instead.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale instead of making you inspect numerous Device Manager entries manually; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation requires the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the exact Sony Ericsson suite that supplies fmgrobex.dll.
Windows Features are usually not the answer
You may find general advice to enable .NET Framework, legacy components, or other Windows Features. That is not an evidence-based first fix for this file.
If the installer specifically reports a missing Windows feature:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Enable only the feature named by the installer.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Run the Sony Ericsson installer again.
Do not enable random legacy features to solve a DLL error. Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX, .NET, and Windows Update do not supply fmgrobex.dll.
If you no longer need the Sony Ericsson software
A missing DLL tied to obsolete software is harmless once the software no longer attempts to start.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove Sony Ericsson PC Suite, File Manager, and related components.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove old desktop and Start menu shortcuts.
- Open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable stale Sony Ericsson entries.
- Check Task Scheduler for an obvious Sony Ericsson task and remove it only if the parent software has already been uninstalled.
If the uninstaller itself fails because of fmgrobex.dll, reinstall the complete suite first, restart, and uninstall it cleanly. Do not use registry cleaners to remove the file reference.

When System Restore is appropriate
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a known installation, cleanup, or security-software action and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore should not be the default solution for an old application that is simply missing its installation files. Repairing or reinstalling the parent software is more targeted.

Random DLL download sites can provide:
- A modified or malicious file
- The wrong architecture
- The wrong release
- An incomplete set of dependencies
- A file that does not match the installed executable
Even when the copied DLL removes the first message, the program may still fail during startup, registration, or phone communication. It can also leave an untrusted binary in a system directory.
Use the original Sony Ericsson CD, the phone’s bundled software, or a trustworthy preserved installer. If no trustworthy installer is available and the program is no longer essential, uninstall it rather than rebuilding it from an isolated DLL.
FAQ
Is fmgrobex.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to Sony Ericsson File Manager or PC Suite software. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
What does OBEX mean?
OBEX refers to object-exchange functionality used for transferring files and other phone content over supported connections. The exact internal implementation of this particular DLL is not documented in a current authoritative Sony source.
Should I register fmgrobex.dll?
Not as a general repair step. Use regsvr32 only when the original installer specifically requires registration and the DLL supports the required registration entry point. Repairing or reinstalling the complete suite is safer.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, the DLL may be corrupt, or the application may be loading the wrong architecture. Reinstall the complete Sony Ericsson package instead of copying another DLL.
Will Microsoft Visual C++ fix the error?
There is no evidence that installing Visual C++ redistributables supplies this file. Install a runtime only when the Sony Ericsson installer or a separate diagnostic specifically identifies that runtime as missing.
Does the file need to be copied to both system folders?
No. Use the application folder supplied by the Sony Ericsson installer. Copying it to both Windows system folders can create architecture and version conflicts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat if the error says the file is not designed to run on Windows?
Treat that as a possible corruption, architecture mismatch, or dependency problem. Remove any standalone copy, reinstall the exact Sony Ericsson package, and use compatibility settings if the installer is old.
What if I only need the phone to transfer files?
If the old PC Suite is no longer required, uninstall it and use a supported transfer method available for the phone and Windows environment. Do not keep restoring a private DLL for a program you no longer use.
When should I suspect malware?
Suspect an impostor when fmgrobex.dll appears outside the Sony Ericsson program directory, arrives from an unknown download, repeatedly returns after deletion, or triggers a security detection. Scan it and do not restore it without verifying its origin.
What is the final fix if none of this works?
The remaining possibilities are an unavailable or incompatible legacy installer, a missing dependency, damaged storage, or an old program that cannot run reliably on current Windows. Preserve the phone data if possible, remove the obsolete suite, and run it only in an appropriately isolated legacy environment when it is genuinely required.
